i don't know how good Bud was as an assistant.

Barry was good, he switched to wish bone

Defense under Gary Gibbs was SUPER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gomer Jones had to have been good, & for many years.

I vote for Gomer just because his name was Gomer. Seriously, how many great teams ever had a coach named Gomer?

I'll tell you how good Bud was as an assistant. Jim Tatum was offered the head coaching position at OU if he brought Bud along. No Bud no job for Jim.

I forgot to mention Gary in the original post.
Gary Gibbs was like Phil Bengston of the Lombardi-era Packers. Great defensive coach who worked mostly under the radar but then didn't pan out as a head coach.

Is the Marine Corps considered a team?

Even though Gibbs didn't 'pan out' as the head coach, he was right up there on any assistant list, he did a hellava job. I always hoped he would be a good HC, but he had a hard act to follow, and I kinda hated to see things go the way they did for him. And then things really got bad . . . . .

Barry's right hand back in my days was Merv Johnson. He was the "o line/TE" coach which made the Sooners role. Scotty Hill might have been the best recruiter until the closer came into the house, which was the man, Barry Switzer.

Disagree on Bobby Proctor. If we could have covered better against Miami, it would have been 3 in a row.

story i remember (possibly true) Gibbs was headed to usc to coach and Barry demoted whomever was DC & gave the position to GG.

Greatest? Barry. Hands down. Installing the bone in the length of time he did and then beating the world bloody with his brand new toy is epic.

After that, you've got Gomer, Bud, Merv, etc., but the best long term production line of hot assistants has to go to Bob. With Mark Stoops, Mike Leach, Mark Mangino, etc. etc. he's been as productive of well respected assistants as any coach I can remember.

How about Larry Lacewell? His defenses were pretty good. I agree that Barry is the greatest.

In no particular order:

Gomer Jones (Even though his record was not great after taking over as HMFIC at OU after Bud left)
Bud Wilkinson (remember, he was an assistant to Jim Tatum before being HMFIC).
Barry Switzer (innovative OC for a few of years at OU under Chuck Fairbanks, came in under Jim MacKenzie).
Gary Gibbs (great coordinator and had a lot to deal with after Switzer resigned).

Then we have also had some others that were really good:

Mack Brown (OC under Switzer for one or two seasons)
Kevin Wilson (innovative OC that got the hurry up into the spot light and now people are copying his work, though he is not responsible for the hurry up approach).
Mike Leach (could be called the founding father of OU's aerial attack).
Mike Stoops (very solid defensive coordinator).
Merv Johnson (very good position coach).

I am sure you can name more.

In 1967, he was named offensive coordinator for the Sooners. In 1970, he convinced Chuck Fairbanks, then OU head coach, to make the most significant and gutsy move in OU's football history, a switch to the wishbone offense. The only vehicles for learning this novel offense were films of the 1968 and 1969 OU-Texas games, since Texas was the only school that used the wishbone. This offense saved the career of Fairbanks and his seven assistants and made possible Oklahoma's second football dynasty.

Edit: I was wrong

i think it's hard to judge how good of an assistant he was, only one year.

I agree that Larry Lacewell deserves some credit for his defenses. And Galen Hall didn't do too bad running our Wishbone once upon a time.

Jim Donlan deserves mention before Mack Brown.

I liked Proctor and you can't argue with the talent he sent to the league. Switzer's linebacker coach sent some pretty good talent to the league as well.

MIKE SHANAHAN- 1975 Offensive Assistant

He turned out to be a pretty good assistant for the Niners and coached Denver to 2 Super Bowl wins.

We have had so many great assistants it's hard to choose. (A lot of schools can immediately point to two or three names.)

In order...

OFFENSE:

1. Barry Switzer
2. Galen Hall
3. Kevin Wilson
4. Merv Johnson
5. Jim Donnan

DEFENSE

1. Larry Lacewell
2. Gary Gibbs
3. Mike Stoops
4. Bobby Proctor
5. Luscious Selmon

Overall: Gomer Jones

Here's a list of our past assistants:
