I'm reading this now. Even though there seems to be a growing backlash movement against it I am enjoying it quite a bit. The only problem is that it is very difficult to keep up with all the Vangers.

I always had trouble keeping up with all the Elves when reading The Silmarillion and thought it was funny that Mr. Bloomkvist went to see the Lord of the Rings during the book because I'd been comparing the task of keeping up with Tolkein's Elves to the task of remembering who all the Vangers are and boom he's watching Lord of the Rings. Go figure.

I wonder if Stevo considers this too low brow for her book club?

all the Dwarves in the Hobbit were pretty tiring at the beginning as well.

that was a pretty good flick. i have seen the ones that followed or read any of the books though.

i guess they are making an American version now.

What is the growing backlash?

I read the first one and thought it was mediocre at best.

So I may have exaggerated a little.

haha, that was beautiful.

I bought the second book the same time as the first one and FORCED myself to finish the first one figuring there had to be something all these people were going gaga over. When I read the last page, I got up went andfound the second book and promptly threw them both in the garbage.

different strokes for different folks I guess.

Isn't this book about some girl who gets killed by that Dutch socialist author?
Or maybe he was Norwegian...

wait, the girl was killed by a socialist author?

The Stieg Larson trilogy should be enjoyed as a housecleaning audio book series. You can get some clean spaces!

You really read the Silmarillion? I double dog dare you to read the Book of Lost Tales I and II. If you do, we may have to put you on the watch list.

That was a poorly constructed sentence.

I meant to say...

Isn't this book by that Dutch/Norwegian socialist author that's about a girl who gets killed?

I've read the series, it was entertaining enough. I don't understand why there would be backlash--not every work of literature needs to be Ulysses.

Do you think that would finally get me a schollie at Hogwarts?

No, absolutly not worth watching the movie.
Wife and I read the first two books and decided to check out the movie.
Watched the fist one, won't bother with the second movie.

Got the first one and read it cause I had to for a book club I'm in. Decided to read all 3 because I'm a fast reader and I had some down-time I needed to fill.

The series was mediocre at best and I think whoever the editor was on these things needs to be fired because the same story could have been told with about half the pages.

Interesting. I hadn't heard anything re a backlash about these books.

I read all three of and them and they were certainly entertaining enough.

The authors politics added something interesting to the story as well, IMO.

I like them, and I've enjoyed the Swedish movies. It's pulp fiction forchrissakes, people, stop expecting Jane Austen (whose stuff I've never been able to finish because it's mind numbingly dull).

From what I understand, the author turned in all three of the novels to a publisher, then promptly died. So they may not have gotten the more extensive editing they really, desperately needed. I just finished the first one, (Dragon Tattoo) and found it okay. If you like graphic descriptions of rape, you'll just love it. If you like even more graphic descriptions of how the protagonist fixed his sandwich, you'll love it even more.

I kept the Vangers straight but...

***SPOILER ALERT***

You guys totally knew Harriet was alive the whole time, right? I mean, that was pretty obvious?

After VK's description, I'm pretty certain I wouldn't like it. I hate Tom Clancy because of his need to describe **** in minute detail. I can't remember what submarine book it was that I was reading where he took 10 pages to describe the instrument panel on the sub. Get to the galdamn killin' and **** dude.

Exactly what I was talking about. Might have been a good story without all the dumb *** minutia

this was my biggest problem, it was in desperate need of some editing and pace.

I didnt know the author died.

It could have been the book he wrote where the subject was describing submarines in detail: Submarine by Tom Clancy (http://www.amazon.com/Submarine-Tom-Clancy/dp/0425138739)

Maybe you assidently picked up a non-fiction book? :texan:

Goldberry is waiting.

I always heard he was a Maia but now I'm not so sure.

I wish Radagast had played a more prominent role. I could have used more Radagast. On the other hand, he was a bit naive. I like my Maia to be more clever than Radagast was.

Rady went all Apocalypse Now on the mission. Thats my theory with Tom and Goldberry as Maia..

I could have used more Radagast

Funny to think that he might have some kind of role in the Hobbit movies - there is a rumored casting for him in it http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2010/10/21/39468-meet-your-hobbit-cast/

I have now finished both The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire. I enjoyed them both. I just got back from Barnes and Noble and I'm about 40 pages into The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

Its hard to keep up with all the Swedish location names.

Sadly, when Lisbeth bought all that stuff at Ikea I could picture most of it in my mind. If anyone is looking for a Bonde Entertainment Center I can help with that. Send me a pm or something.
