View Full Version : Last Minute Come from Behind Wins by OU

We must not be a great come from behind team, because I cannot think of many games since I followed OU in early 70s in which we have been behind but drove down and scored by a TD or FG near the end of the game to win. The only ones which come to mind are:

at Missouri, 1975, Joe Washington runs 71 yds with only a couple of minutes left, and then scores the two pt. conversion, and Mizzou missed a field goal at the end;

at Ohio St., 1977, Uwe makes the 41 yard FG at the end to win it.

Orange Bowl, 1980 season, where JC Watts drove us down and we scored and then made the two pt. conversion, and FSU missed a real long FG at the end.

at Syracuse during the Gibbs era, where we were way ahead but blew or Gibbed away the lead and then we drove down and made a long FG on the last play to win.

There may be others, but I cannot think of them. Can anyone help?

If we get behind, I always lose hope. I can't stand the feeling, but unfortunately that is what history has dictated. That being said, we just don't fall behind that often 811-304-53 (72%).

That's what I was thinking, We just don't seem to ever get behind real big. 17-0 to Nebraska seemed like we were losing by 5 touchdowns.

Correction, I meant 1980, not 1982. We did indeed lose in 1982. In 1980, Buster Rhymes made the long run near the end and we ended up winning and stunning the crowd in Lincoln. In 1982, the Nebulard crowd was so starved for a victory that after they won they rushed the field and acted like soccer hooligans.

When we played Boise, we were down 28-10 in the 3rd qtr and came back to tie with a 2 pt conversion and take the lead 35-28 after a Marcus Walker pick 6 with 1:30 left. But alas, we couldn't prevent a TD with seconds left and 4th and 17. ****.

'02 Alabama was the last time I our two-minute offense went on a scoring drive at the end of the game, to come from behind and win, that I can recall. We've had plenty of opportunities under Stoops, but very rarely has it actually worked.

Is brushing your teeth foreplay, too? Also, be sure to take out the recycling. That's not part of it, but it is still important. Oh, and keep your socks on....your feet might get cold.

As did Hybl by being ready when White went down. The 2nd quarter of that game certainly among (if not THE) the best stretches of playing time in his OU career.

What about the Texas game under Blake in 1996? Jarrail Jackson's big return and the OT win.

Baylor '05.

Weren't we up 17 points or something in the first quarter? Then we lost interest and let Baylor back in the game. Seems like somebody (JD Runnels?) fumbled to allow Baylor to score and tie, which is why we went into overtime. IIRC.

We didn't have to come from behind late to beat Nebraska in 1987. We beat them 17-7, and it wasn't that close. It was total domination.

It was Gute (pretty much the only drawback to his day as he came up huge). Baylor tied it up when Lewis Baker flat whiffed trying to cover Ziegler on a 50+ yd. pass w/ about a minute left.

Barely, OU recovered a freeky looking onside kick and got a field goal at the end.

I am always a pretty rational fan, but I was about to slap someone if we lost to Baylor. When Iglesias made that catch I wasn't happy, just relieved.

I don't believe we ever trailed the '84 game. We led 10-7 before the goal-line stand then Bradley scored late to make it 17-7.

Yup, and we missed a chip shot 20 yd. FG which would have made it a 7 pt. margin, but we stopped Stanford and Jones ran the clock out by running around in the backfield and getting roughed up on the last play. It was not a real dignified finish, but a win is a win.

in 84 against neb we were backed up to our goal line after a great goal line stand and had to punt, they fumbled the punt at midfield then danny bradley went on a td run to seal it.maybe not come from behind but i feel if we had not made a couple huge plays at the end they would have scored and beat us.neb was better that year but we had some sooner magic . in 87 against neb we definitely dominated but trailed 7-0 in the 3rd quarted, rotnei anderson seemed like he fumbled 17 times that game lol

1953.

Homecoming.

Colorado ties the game at 20 - 20 in the closing minutes of the game.

OU receives the KO and moves to midfield.

Merrill Green goes 51 yards, untouched, right up the middle for a TD with scant seconds left on the clock.

OMG!

OU wins 27 -20.

I think 3 of Blake's wins have been recounted here. Only 10 more to go and we've covered his storied career. Any Blake win was, by definition, an upset, comeback, last second win, or close call.

Did we actually trail in that game? As I recall, we blew a huge lead in that one.
