View Full Version : Ron Franklin Pulled from Radio Broadcast of Fiesta Bowl

...apparently, for the same reasons he got in trouble before. I always thought, next to the Keith Jackson/Frank Broyles tandem, that Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried were the best duo to call college football games in the modern era, and have a lot of fond memories of them from the '90's, but if true this is probably the end of the line for Ron.

I would have never guessed that Ron was such a condescending jacktard....he doesn't seem like he would be that way....I hadn't heard about the 2005 incident.

There's no excuse for that sort of boorish behavior, if true. It's too bad. I think Franklin is the best in the biz. I'd rather listen to his CFB call more than any other announcer. But he shouldn't be employed if he can't get along with his coworkers any better than this.

We don't know what led up to this happening. We do know that these women get these jobs because of how they look in tight britches.

If they hired sideline reporters based on playing experience we would have more Lynn Swanns and more discrimination lawsuits. They want it both ways and some people are dumb enough to give it to them.

I'm very surprised by this as my former neighbors are long time friends of Franklin and related that he is just a wonderful person. I'm sure there are two sides to this story but we won't hear the other one. I'm just a little doubtful considering the character of my former neighbors, as they certainly wouldn't run in the same circles as the person related in this article.

The sideline reporter has the look of a world-class ball buster.

Look up some other articles on her and then be the judge, Seems like this kinda stuff happens a lot to her

Last February I reported that Gillispie openly mocked on-air questions from ESPN sideline reporter Jeanine Edwards after she had previously turned down his off-court amorous advance. Following my report, the athletic dept. at the Univ. of Kentucky went out of its way to mend fences with ESPN, allowing the network’s reporters unprecedented access to the Wildcat program

Heather Cox is the Gal that asked Bob and the guys all the stupid questions.

Even if she was wronged by Franklin....I could give a **** if she ever had an On Air gig like that again. She's awful. I'm sure lots of folks in Sports Media are tired of the ones that didn't earn the right for those gigs by being really good at what they do.

Here's a pic of her and Landry during Post Game. I'm gonna link it as I don't want to re-size it.

Franklin has seriously been suffering from Old Man Syndrome the past few years. He completely struggles to have any understanding of what is going on in the games he calls anymore. But he is a legend and I think that is why he keeps getting work. He is a real live Sexual Harrassment Video though.

I've worked in many different environments and taken my share of cheap shots from men. I am not a lesbian and would prefer not to be addressed in a demeaning way. However, I am skilled at both ignoring idiots and/or retorting--depending on the circumstance.

That said, I don't see myself reporting that incident. I wonder if that was just one of many.

It's unprofessional to call her 'sweetcakes' and he shouldn't have done it. By the same token, she should have simply complained to Ron Franklin and only reported it to her employer if he refused to apologize and cooperate.

Why don't you just let the boys disucss this one. OK Sweetheart?
;)

Is it a poor reflection on me that I laugh every time I picture Gramps Franklin saying that to her? I work in a professional environment, so I know that type of speech isn't accepted anymore. However, does it sound juvenile to anyone else that she had to "tell on him?" Perhaps he does it all the time and this was the tipping point?

Agreed. I heard a little bit of this on the radio this morning in the car. I guess I did hear Edwards and when I scanned the article Heather's name was the first I saw....Still...my point is still there. If you aren't very good at what you do and you are getting a job that someone else could do a whole lot better and you are getting those jobs because you score really high on a test of viewers...based on those results and particularly why those results were higher...ESPN decides a bunch of us want to see a Woman do the sideline job. Maybe we do. What I don't care for is that ESPN decides to have her do the Post Game Interviews. It's hard enough to stomach them asking these Coaches stupid questions as they go into the locker room at halftime. You get the same canned tell her through her ear piece type questions that she capable of spitting out. It's many times apparent that they hardly listen to anything the Coaches or players say as they wait for them to quit answering...they are preparing to unload another gem or say...Thanks Coach...Congratulations.

If this is the standard we should expect as far as interviews....I say quit holding things up for TV....get the Coach and the Players in front of the Press Corp and give them time to grill them. Have a quick Trophy handed to them...announce the MVP and Offensive and Defensive Players can be notified prior to sitting down in front of the press. This is kind of how things used to be but ESPN and the others don't schedule time for it. What you see today sucks bad.

They probably quit doing it the old way because of guys like Traber who had an agenda and did stuff like he did to Nate Hybl after the Rose Bowl. Once Traber and his troll were on the air....they didn't have much to say. That was awful for Hybl but what is amazing is that after that....Traber had a job in Sports Radio.

Per a tweet from 107.5 the Game in South Carolina, Ron Franklin was fired today by ESPN.

At first I was thinking this happened on-air and was thinking that Jeannie shouldn't have complained but kept it together for the sake of live TV, like the poor sideline woman interviewing drunk stug-a-ling Naimath a few years back. However, I can understand complaints if it was a private meeting.

Good move to fire Franklin rather than have a family company like Disney take the publicity hit, especially since he's been warned in the past about sexist language.

It's a tough job for both the old guy commentators and the female sideline reporters alike, having a big audience full of critics that think they could all do better without knowing the circumstances (I guarantee you they have a producer gabbing in their ear while a coach/player is getting interviewed, while they're talking about the game in the booth, etc.) ... but it's also a highly-sought job and everyone is replaceable. There's no room for mistakes like this.

What's really sad about this - and it should be a lesson to all commentators - is that when you google his name now and for probably the rest of his life, this will be what comes up. This will be his legacy to a majority of the public, that he was the old guy/insensitive prick who got fired for calling a woman an "@$$hole."

Is that how we should remember him? No, but it's gonna be that way now, because he made a (apparently repeated) mistake and finally got fired for it.
