View Full Version : Depth Chart/Redshirt question

Just had a look at the depth chart on Soonersports.com. Its dated 12-29-10, and seems to have a couple changes.

On offense it lists two true freshman on the 2-deep that to my knowledge have not played this year. Bronson Irwin at RG and Joe Powell at WR.

Now, odds are these guys are not going to play, maybe it was to acknowledge their progress, I don' know. My question is: because the game is played on 01-01-11, is there any provision to allow a guy to play without burning a redshirt?

I doubt it, but the seeing the freshman on the depth chart at this stage of the season was interesting.

I think if they play they burn the shirt b/c the bowl game is still part of the 2010 season...also powell played some early in the season, not sure if irwin did or not.

It would be pretty stupid to let them play. There's no way they would be needed and it would just be wasting an entire year

The rule reads like this:

You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

My take on that is that the bowl is still part of your season. It will count on your "seasons" record.

IMHO. Good question though.

This is correct, and is why the NCAA finally began awarding statistics from bowl games (Technically an exhibition) to athletes/schools.

I think the team spends a large majority of bowl practices letting the young guys get reps, maybe thats why

Bronson and Joe have been right there all along. And Bronson has played already vs Iowa State, though it was very unnoticeable.

Here is the Participation Report.

I like the name Bronson as a First Name. Sounds like a Future ALL AMERICAN to me. He'll be something by next year I bet....

I saw Irwin on TV playing at Mustang, he was gigantic. Listed at something like 314 right now. Anxious to see him muscle up in Norman, and get on the field.
