had some great poetry. Verily, almost none about football, however.

I know what he's thinking. "Hmmm... I can make sure that my servants are all here by having them stand on a floor painted with large colored dots."

Except for this little-known gem:
TO FOOTBALL:
O thou, with sweaty brow, who lookest down
Through the clear sky of approaching fall, turn
Thy hollowed eyes upon our college town
Which in marching band hails thy approach, O Football!
The fans tell one another, and the listening
Rabble hears; all our longing eyes are turn’d
Up to thy bright stadiums: issue forth
And let thy cleat-ed feet visit our clime!
Come o’er the grassy fields, and let our cheers
Praise thy helmeted players; let us taste
Thrill of glorious win; scatter thy plays
Upon our sport-starved land that mourns for thee.
O deck her forth with thy passing plays; pour
Thy pounding hits on her turf; and put
Thy champion’s crown upon her languish’d team,
Whose long workouts are prepared for thee.
