i'd make a distinction between vocalist and lead singer
i love Dido, but i wouldn't call her a lead singer, or Linda Ronstadt, but i never liked her. otherwise, all solid choices :D
but i want to marry Jenny Lewis:

I think I would have picked one of the Carpenters' covers of a Leon Russell song..."Superstar" for one.

That was good too. They were really hawt back in the day. When she died it was a National Event. Her death brought anorexia to the forefront.

She had one of the truly great voices, IMO. I remember when she died; it was pretty sad because it was just so senseless. And thanks for posting the Darlene Love vid...I'm still clueless when it comes to posting videos. :O

To me the best female singer of any genre is Patsy Cline.
After that it's Ann Wilson and Billie Holiday

I think most of us guys that were late-teens/20-somethings in the 1980's were in lust w/ Pat Benatar. :O
Thought the female lead for Quarterflash was a pretty good imitation...

Thought the female lead for Quarterflash was a pretty good imitation...Pat's still looking pretty good, for her age, and can still belt it out with her powerful diaphragm. I saw her perform live twice in PHX within the last couple yrs. I liked Blondie just as well, or maybe even a bit better, though. I think I like Blondie's repertoir more than Pat's.

just a matter of taste... I liked the lyrics, beat, voice, looks... a friend of mine was all over Stevie Nicks back in the day; I thought her voice was too rough... just a matter of preference...

Surprised no one's mentioned Joan Jett. She could rock. Loved her theme for American Choppers:
