Le Beof takes a lot of ribbing from Cogburn over Le Boef's being a texass Ranger. In fact, Rooster calls him a texass "brush-popper" and asks if all the Rangers are mounted on sheep like Le Boef.

As to both characters' war expereince, Le Boef claimed to be an ANV vet under Kirby Smith. Rooster claims to have ridden with "Captain" Quantrell. To which Le Boef dismissively remarks "Captian Quantrell? captain of what?"

In the final scene, a grown Mattie goes to visit Cogburn and learns he died from Frank James who did not stand when approached. She listens, and as she turns to leave tells James, "keep your seat, trash."
