I honestly think that some people that wanted to get out of their service requirement used DADT to their advantage. Remember that Simpsons episode where Skinner rejoined the army?

Skinner: But how do I get out of the Army?
Bart: Just make a pass at a commanding officer!
Skinner: Done, and done... and I mean DONE!

Seriously though - what was the term? Stop-loss? That and having to continuously go on multiple tours in the Middle East's blistering sandy weather (like Lubbock, except potentially with some sort of trees) might have gotten to some people that would do anything to get out. Going AWOL leads to military prison, so... yeah.

The campaign promise was not fulfilled within the first month, so it doesn't count.

Didn't think about that one. Probably something to that.
