Looking to start a new something for the kids and family this year. Anyone got any good ideas for something fun we could start?

Not sure what sort of tradition you're looking for, but we adopted "Billy" as our elf and my kids love coming down each morning to see where he's decided to hang out for the day to watch and report back to Santa.

Of course, I have young kids. Probably not so hot if you have teen-agers :)

My wife's family is Swedish. I guess a long standing tradition over there is to hide a small "pickle" shaped Christmas ornament on the tree somewhere. The kids all try to find it and whichever one does gets an extra little gift. Apparently it is a pretty common old tradition because I have heard other people say that they do that too. It sounds odd, but my kids love it.

Another fun tradition we have is that I give each kid $25 in singles as one of their gifts, but I always give it in a different way. One year I filled a giant box with shredded paper and rolled up the bills into tiny rolls and hid throughout. It literally took them 15 minutes to pick them all out. One year I had multiple clues sending them all over the house. The last clue sent them to our guest room. I had arranged the bills on top of a ceiling fan blade and when they turned on the light the whole room started raining dollar bills. Even though it is not their "big gift," my kids really look forward to opening that gift every year because they have so much fun actually getting to the money.

For our Christmas tree skirt we slather finger paint all over the kids hands and make an imprint with name each year.

Before Christmas dinner read Luke 2:1-20... it will only take a couple minutes, yet the message is clear: Jesus is the reason for the season.

"Hot cockles" was a popular game at Christmas in medieval times. It was a game in which the other players took turns striking the blindfolded player, who had to guess the name of the person delivering each blow. "Hot cockles" was still a Christmas pastime until the Victorian era.

you could play Hot cockles

Bake cookies. Hell, bake anything. You get tasty baked goods, and your kids actually learn how to cook something.

(Not saying you aren't teaching your kids how to cook, but there are an appalling number of people out there now that can't even figure out how to make mac & cheese any way other than "add water and microwave")

We have a longstanding tradition of playing bingo for valuable prizes. Past prizes have been the paddle ball game, a fruit cake (same cake, on its 10th year), chip clips. It is amazing how people will fight for the prizes. There are usually 30 prizes, so it goes for awhile.

You track Santa all the way into your State as he travels all over the world. The kids love it.

We always sang Happy Birthday to Jesus before opening gifts. It teaches the kids that their gifts are more than just from Santa. It's really kinda neat.

Little known fact.......The 7 in "Jack Daniels" is for the 7th Reindeer. Might want to leave a little behind for him too.

Just sayin.....

You mean Donder?

Not Donner, as in the party of doomed, cannibalistic pioneers?

If I was a proud reindeer in Santa's team and was constantly misreferenced as a cannibal, I'd be a drunk, too.

We send the kids off to their grandparents and have a joyous holiday. For reals.

Actually we always do Christmas a week early to get it over with, and then let the kids go to Iowa or Arizona for the actual holiday. Works great. Lots of dirty Santa/Mrs. Santa goes on at the Deanarosa during Christmas.

So, for me, Christmas is over. And it's a good thing. While the rest of you saps are out there fighting over the last set of crappy dish towels for Aunt Martha, I'm quietly enjoying myself on the farm.

It's cuz y'all listen to sh*tty satanic death-metal instead of JS Bach and the Christmas Song sung by Mel Torme or Nat Cole & stuff like that. Fer true, man!

I grill steaks, but I'm thinking of upgrading to a standing rib roast next year. I'll have to ask dear ol' Dad if he likes prime rib.

Also, we make sausage-cheese biscuit balls for the morning of, which are pretty great.

When our kids were young we would take them to the store and let them pick out a few toys that they thought other kids would like. Then we would all go to a local charity and drop off the toys. Now we are doing the same thing with our grandchildren. I think sharing with others is a good tradition.
