Guyer's elite QB stands in Steele's path
By Blake Hurtik

Published: 12:00 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2010

DENTON — The similarities between Steele and Denton Guyer are almost eerie.

Both schools opened in 2005.

Both moved to Class 5A this year after dominating in 4A.

Both are black and silver.

Both will be playing for the Class 5A Division II championship on Saturday.

Both have an explosive difference-maker on offense. For Steele, it's running back Malcolm Brown. For Guyer, it's quarterback J.W. Walsh.

And even though Walsh, an Oklahoma State commit, is lower in the recruiting rankings than Brown — No. 13 in the state to Brown's No. 1 — he's got one thing on Steele's blue-chipper:

jwwalshforheisman.com.

“I hadn't heard about it until a middle school coach told me about it,” Walsh said. “I thought it was pretty cool.”

His coach and father, John Walsh, wasn't as thrilled.

“That's just ridiculous,” said the fifth-year coach. “But he doesn't get caught up in it, and that's the thing I'm most proud of as a dad. I don't think he even knew he was All-State last year.”

The site, created by a die-hard OSU fan, may be jumping the gun on Walsh's Heisman campaign — he enrolls in January — but it does speak to the expectations already heaped onto his shoulders.

Someone tell the Pokes that Barry Sanders would have stayed his senior year had he not won the Heisman. He would have had more left to prove and his father wouldn't have had as much of an argument.

That might not be true - daddy might have still begged him to give him pro money - but it'll at least arguments over whether the Heisman was worth losing beloved Barry :D

Barry was very wise to leave. almost the whole offense was gone, except for him & Gundy. hart lee dykes, the other receiver, the stud fullback & the whole o-line.plus, i think osu was then on probation.

he rushed for over 2600 yds, plus over 200 in the bowl game. 238 ypg.

he had the best year of any running back, ever.

The final was 24-21 Steele over Guyer and Brown looked like another big, slow running back that UT is getting. He can run over 170 pound non division 1 safeties, but he's gonna find out he can't do that all the time against 200 pound safeties and 230 pound linebackers.

over-rated *clap *clap *clapclapclap

As for Walsh. He's pretty raw as a passer. Reminded me of a rawer version of Zac Robinson. I bet he redshirts. Except he's a total doosh bag on the field. Celebrating and yapping at opponents and refs all the time. I can't wait to watch his hopes and dreams get smashed into the ground every time his aggies play us.

Very pedestrian performance by Walsh. How was this guy ever rated that high in Texas? I really thought he was supposed to be a man among boys. I guess I fell for all of the aggie/DOK propaganda. He won't be able to play in OSU's current offensive scheme, unless he somehow changes about 100%. I thought he was supposed to be really good? He does look like a poor man's High School version of Zach Robinson, pretty good with his feet, but not much of a passing threat.:stunned:

I also missed why Malcom Brown was supposed to be comparable to Adrian Peterson. He looked like your typical Whorn recruit. All hat, and no cattle. :texan:

Second best player ever behind Jim Thorpe. But I don't think that's the issue here.

We have two championships and basketball and zillions in rasslin' but I never go to GIA anymore because I spent all of my money on west endzone football season tickets... it's the only way I'll see the Gooner football game!

I'll never stop talking about our FIFTY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, even though all I care about is the sport the Gooners care about, the fooseball!

I am just so jealous of the fact that we only have 19 national championships and OSU has 50 national championships. That's about 70 less than OSU! I'm a Gooner math wiz, but I didn't attend Gooner U, I just bought Gooner gear at my Gooner Walmart with my food stamps, welfare and public assistance paid for by OSU's hard working taxpayers. GOOMER GOONER!

Trying to be objective, I understand that OSU lacks the resources and tradition of a place like OU, and that their fans have to feel some frustration at having their noses rubbed in the success of their cross-state rivals.

But why do they CONSTANTLY have to say ridiculous, loser talk like this?
