View Full Version : Science Disproven, Turtles All the Way Down Theory is the New Frontrunner.

"Back in 2006 there was a lot of talk of testing String Theory (http://science.slashdot.org/story/06/02/09/0027200/Test-for-String-Theory-Developed). Well, today CERN has released a statement for the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment (http://cms.web.cern.ch/cms/News/2010/MicroBlackHoleSignatures15122010/index.html). The short of it is simply that as far as they could tell "No experimental evidence for microscopic black holes has been found." The long statement (http://cms.web.cern.ch/cms/News/2010/MicroBlackHoleSignatures15122010/CMSStatement.pdf) indicates that since the highly precise CMS detector found no spray of sub-atomic particles of normal matter while LHC smashed particles together, the hypothesis by String Theory that micro black holes would be formed and quickly evaporated in this experiment was incorrect. These tests have given the team confidence to say that they can exclude a 'variety of theoretical models' for the cases of black holes with a mass of 3.5-4.5 TeV (1012 electron volts). Not Even Wrong (http://www.math.columbia.edu/%7Ewoit/wordpress/?p=3333) points us to the arxiv prepublication (http://arxiv.org/abs/1012.3375) for those of you well versed in Greek. While you may not be able to run around claiming that String Theory is dead and disproved, evidently there are some adjustments that need to be made."

I have never understood why turtles do not have turtle in them. They don't even look like turtles. Turtles are green, and do not contain either caramel or nuts. The person who came up with the name "turtles" for that particular treat is a moron of the highest order.

If you tilt your head and squint they do, but not regular OK turtles. More like desert turtles.

There's more explanation that is needed here:

1) This doesn't rule out string theory. As string theory is really a conglomeration of a multitude of theories with lots of variable parameters.

2) This rules out a subset of string theory. Specifically, what gets ruled out are large extra dimensions of a particular geometry. String theory requires extra dimensions, but whether they must 'large' or 'small', or even what shape they may be is, as far as I know, unresolved.

3) But not so fast. It *could* be that microscopic black holes smaller than 3.5 TeV are created, but are not decaying via hawking radiation. Not likely, but I'm sure the "OMG the LHC is gonna destroy the wurld!" crowd will be happy to tell you that this is in fact the case, and that we will all die shortly.

4) And even then, the threshold for the creation of a black hole might be just a little higher than the limit or reach of the LHC. In which case, we've only set limits on how large the extra dimensions can be.

It's not disproven.

It's just an alternate theory for which no proof has been found.

Any minute now we should have legislators lining up to require that it be taught in schools.

Are you referring to string theory, or intelligent design? Or the Great A'Tuin?

I was making a none-too-subtle jab at intelligent design by saying that string theory isn't disproven, there's just no proof of it.
