The coaching vacancies at OU, Orange Retards (N), and Orange Retards (S) give some insights into the philosophies of Bob Stoops, Hair Gel, and The Clapper.

Stoops is clearly a mentor. He treats his staff like he treats the players developing them over the long term and preferring to promoting from within rather than bringing in a splashy new hire when somebody moves on to a head coach gig. If you have confidence in your people, promoting from within is a no-brainer. However, he's not afraid to bring in new people (i.e. Pelini) if the situation warrants

Orange Retard (N) apparently has a coaching staff as shallow as their depth chart, because they are always looking for "splashy" hires. This is the staffing equivalent of always looking for JUCO transfers because your recruiting sucks.

Orange Retard (S) has the opposite problem. Mack often keeps dead weight *cough*Greg Davis*cough* around when it's clear that it's time to bring in outside talent, excepting the botched HC(@UF)IW situation :D. He no longer has that option, so it will be interesting to see if goes for short-term gain or long-term development.
