Fiesta Bowl game guide came out today, and one thing stood out to me more than anything else: Red Zone Defense.
OU
29/32: 91%
National Rank: 112
Big 12 rank: 12

I knew it wasn't great, but that is god awful..
Discuss.

That is pretty bad, but if it is accurate, that means we only allowed opponents in the RZ 2.66 times per game. That is not bad.

PS - Is that 29 scores or 29 TD's?

Does that translate into they scored on 29 out of 32 trips into our red zone? If so, then the average game, we allow teams into our red zone an average of 2.5 times and they score 2.25 times on average.
I'm not too happy with that and the ranking is not good, but either you're allowing a lot of 20+ yard scores or the other guys are not scoring much.
I'd be interested to see how many total excursions into their red zones others allowed. That might be as telling a stat as any.

You'll notice that aTm is #3 in red zone efficiency, we are #110, and yet we gave up less total points in the red zone. That alone tells me this stat is not a comprehensive indictment.

I didn't look at the article, but I would be that our allowing teams in the RZ to begin with is one of the best in the country. And that is with the 41 point OSU game thrown in.

The 32 is more amazing to me than the 29/32.

It looks like OU was 22nd in points given up in the red zone and tied for 12th in red zone opportunities.

The biggest red zone stop of the year was Travis Lewis intercepting Martinez in the end zone. We didn't get many red zone stops all year, but we did when the Big 12 Championship was on the line.

Plus this year every team we play makes all their field goals. It is like our opponents can't miss. I would have to look at the stats to verify, but it felt that way.

for me, a really valuable stat would be points allowed/series which would take into account how many more series per game our hurryup offense forces our defense to play. not sure there are any stats where you can see the number of series your defense played against. That would be a telling stat. much more telling than this stupid redzone stat which essentially is a measure of how good the opposing field goal kicker was.

Well you can do it the hard way. that is take the number of plays the defense played, divided by 13 (number of games). then take the number scores allowed. that will give you a good indictation.

Interesting stat. Does that mean we don't bend much... but when we do we break?

The majority of the awful defensive stats come from the 1st half of the season.

That is absolutely correct. OUr defense did a complete 360. But see guys, Nebraska is better at rushing and passing on offense, ranked 35th in total offense and 10 in total defense. Connecticut, ranked 96 in total offense and 48 in total defense.

that stat means as much as the quarterback efficiency rating...meaning its worthless

What other passing stat is better?

I think you mean a complete 180.

I do. 180, glad they didn't do a 360, lol
Those stats do mean something. Nebraska and Air Force both have a really good rushing offense. That we beat them means something.

As far as what NFL guys look for, none of them matter much...but that one means less than all the others..

The reason its not taken seriously by NFL people is that its more a mark of the offensive system the QB is in than the ability of the quarterback...Completion percentage figures to heavily into the equation..

If it was important, Texas Tech would have had a 1st round quarterback every year in the draft and Matt Ryan would have went undrafted.
