After an autumn of devotion to college football at the expense of reading, I may be a little too excited to have gotten my hands on these three books today:

Clive: Life and Death of a British Emperor, by Robert Harvey,

Cochrane: Life and Exploits of a Fighting Captain, by the same, and

To Rule the Waves: How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World, by Arthur Herman.

Turn off the TV, Ma!

I am still waiting for a relevant response from someone who reads books; i.e., someone other than an illiterate OUI refugee... ;)

Are these books available at the public library?

Sure. Er. Maybe.

Since you are semi-literate, you may need to follow these signs which were evidenlty designed so that people who can't read "library" can still find one.

Have your read the book about the last thousand days of the British empire? It's fairly enjoyable? I don't remeber the author off the top of my head.

Here's the news, TU. Couldn't find those books, so I checked out Churchill Defiant by Barbara Leaming. I will get back to you on that. I also checked out Acid Christ by Mark Christensen, which is a biography of Ken Kesey, but I don't suppose you'll have much interest in Kesey...

I am looking forward to reading the latest Doonesbury compilation. That will really make me appear smart.

A Kesey bio might be cool. Can I read it while not tripping?

Poor little fella. I'm so sorry, but YOU said you were semi-literate!

I just like the idea of a picture sign so people who can't read can still find the library. I guess nobody else thinks it's funny. :O

Sure. Girl at the library told me, "I'm not old enough to remember him, but my husband is older, and he remembers." Really, did she have to say that?

O.K., here's what I've got so far, TU. Churchill was voted out in the elections following the war. Kind of a strange way to treat such a revered figure, but evidently, Churchill wasn't even that popular inside his own party. Churchill felt that he understood the danger of Stalin taking over Eastern Europe, and that Roozevelt/Truman were too soft on "Uncle Joe". His relationship with Truman had been strained, but he had hoped he would have had the time to influence Truman in the other direction. Since he had been voted out, he could not be at the conference.
