So I am going to a Holiday Party tomorrow night, and my assigned side dish is tequila. I've never been a big tequila drinker, so I don't know what is best to bring. Recommendations?

Have you been invited to a Holiday Party or a Christmas Party?

Your answer will influence my suggestion.

You don't have to be "uppity" to prefer Patron.

Herradura is also good.

When 3G was out here for the OU vs UW game in 2008 she made me refer to her as "Ms Sooner the Third"

Quite uppity indeed.

A Christmas Party thrown by Atheists and Jews.

For the Atheists you dont have to bring any tequila. You just need to tell them there is some they cant see behind the bar but you believe it is there. Then they will call you an idiot for your beliefs, but cant prove there is some behind the bar. But you get to walk out of there drunk as hell!!!

For the Jew......Kosher Tequila

It doesn't matter. All tequilas under $200 taste the same. Just buy a mid-range bottle, like $25-$35, so nobody will think you're cheap. People don't drink tequila because they are sophisticated. They want to get wasted. No need to waste too much money.

if you're gonna buy ethyl alcohol, buy the un-adulterated form: everclear.

I remember when my grandpa used to distill ethyl alcohol out of fermented grapes...seeing that clear liquid roll down from the condenser, right into a shot glass.....hmhm

I think Jose has a weird aftertaste. Sauza is my cheap tequila of choice, Herradura is my gold tequila of choice, and patron silver is my uppity silver of choice.
I agree that Cazadores would be a good choice in the $25 dollar range.
Costco usually has good tequila prices, and I think they are giving out booze coupons in the store today.

1. Make sure it is 100% agave tequila. Anything else is a mixto and usually only has 51% tequila then 49% cheap liquor blended together and maybe some caramel for color and flavor.

2. Choose your style - blanco, reposado, anejo.
Blanco - Unaged so it has the most agave flavor and is the best for mixing drinks like a margarita.
Reposado - Aged 2 months to 1 year in Oak barrels. Good choice if you don't know if people will be drinking straight or mixing. Also good for drinking straight when you don't want to spend the extra for anejo
Anejo - Aged at least 1 year and sometimes up to 3 years. Best for drinking straight.

3. Find a bottle that meets the first two criteria in your price range. You won't really go wrong.

Tips -

Patron is very good but overpriced. Find something else and save your money.

Best bang for the buck by far is El Tesoro De Don Filipe. You can't get a better Tequila in a blanco or reposado. And even the high end $35 anejo can't be matched without spending at least $80. Because this is the last Tequila distillery left that only uses fully ripened agave and the distillery doesn't have electricity, quantities are limited and can be hard to find.

So if you can't find that, some other good brands for a reasonable price are Cazadores, Cuervo Tradicional Reposado, Herradora, and Don Julio. Just make sure that the bottle says 100% agave. I've seen some good brands that used to be 100% agave recently turn mixto to save money.

Most Cuervo is gut rot mixto, but the tradicional reposado is really good and the reserva de la familia line of Cuervo is great.

I tried Porfidio tequila one time. It's the brand with a blown-glass cactus in the bottom of the bottle. That was good stuff. (FYI, I didn't pay NEARLY the $120 it's listed for online now. I bought it probably 6 or 7 years ago and paid like $40 for a bottle of reposado. It was very nice.)
