Who wants to be a coach someday said this on Kevin Wilson...

"he is not creative at all" "he is not a good coach"

I defended Wilson admittedly.

Who's right?

Coach Wilson knows his stuff. He's had a few brain farts as we all know, but it's hard to refute 2008's offensive stats. I know fans complain that he has trouble making in-game adjustments, but the "experts" rave about his ability to adjust. I'll just say that I enjoyed having him as our OC, and he will be missed. Hopefully his replacement will have the same success at OU.

Why be creative and give away all your trick plays when running up the middle wins against mid majors?

Yeah, we had some close calls this year, but disguising our potential got us a Big 12 title.

I bet none of you knew Landry had that big run in him till Saturday on 4th and 2 :D

Creative? What a vague term. Every play you see out there is a recycled old play with one or two wrinkles. Nobody creates anymore; they just rearrange. KW has been the best amongst them in rearranging plays, and he is the sole reason why the no-huddle has become so popular in college football. He didn't invent it, but he made it popular.

"he is not creative at all" "he is not a good coach"

Two different points.

If KW isn't creative, who is? As Albo pointed out, successful coaches are really just recombining old ideas into new ones. So any answer to that question is suspect. Everyone is standing on the shoulders of giants at this point.

If KW isn't a good coach, who is? His offenses have been prolific and successful everywhere he's coached. You might argue it's all about the athletes at OU, but don't forget he was putting up big numbers against the Big10 before he came here. And Northwestern is no football factory. He was winning on scheme. Success - ultimately, how else do you measure the quality of a coach?

Tell this dude that if he wants to be a coach, he could do a lot worse than to emulate KW.

Going to the no huddle in '08 was not only creative, but daring. We were pretty darn good in '07, so it took guts to do it.

I had a big, long copycat post typed within this post to straight drop a threadjack. It was a thing of beauty.

I decided against it for this simple statement.

Not only is this thread gay, your facebook guy is too. And has no hope whatsoever if he's pursuing a job in coaching.

Traber was talking about this yesterday (yes, I admit I turn it over there on my drive home when Laura Ingraham goes to commercial break). He made the point that OU under Stoops is one program that has been able to put up big passing #s even when the run game isn't working. His point was that in several of those seasons, we've not had a well-balanced offense. In the traditional sense, that is true.

But, with the variety of pass plays that KW employs, it IS a balanced offense. Many of our pass plays are like run plays which keep defenders close to the LOS. So, even though they don't show up as rushing #s in the stats, they have a similar effect on a defense. With many of today's offenses, breaking the #s down by rushing and passing doesn't really give a good description of what is happening on the field.

Now, that being said, I would be thrilled if we had a big bruising Wisconsin Badger type of RB who can consistently move the pile 4 ypc. Sometimes, I do think KW has overused the Demarco up the middle play even when it's not working, but that play has also probably opened things up down the field on third downs. Just look at how effective we've been on 3rd down the last two games. Also, the fourth down conversion on the Landry bootleg. You know NU coaches had seen our past tendencies to run that play right up the gut. That's why it worked.

Overall, I think KW has been creative enough. We don't need Boise creativity to win. Hey, we're Big 12 Champs, again!

SoonerAtKU
12/10/2010, 10:30 AM
I'm sure if he can get them to line up properly and execute a handoff to the right hole, he's a hell of a coach.

He also has no idea what it takes to run a big-time offense at any real, competitive level. He's probably the kind of "coach" that thinks running trick plays 10 times a game means "creative".

I recall a three TE set Kevin Wilson implemented. Then we got away from it. Why?

BECAUSE THE GUY IS CREATIVE AND WE HAD THE PERSONNEL AT THE TIME. Now we don't, so we don't use it. That's pretty creative.

It's buttpipes like that guy that are in the stands grumbling and crying "OMGYOU SUCK RUN THE BALL" when a defense is blowing and going, safeties down, making it real hard to do just that.

So here's my proposition.

Ask Bryce Lombardi WHY James Hanna (not Hannah) was open on that play. Ask him WHAT Oklahoma State was doing defensively in some of the trip-tight and double tight sets that allowed Hanna to clear on the corner-up with no over. Ask him why in the hell a program like the University of Oklahoma with skilled coaches and amazing talent would need to resort to trick plays and gimmicky bullsh*t when all that has to happen as an offensive coordinator is to read what the defense is taking away depending on the set its attempting to take it away from and dictate to that defense that your offense will slit their throat for making that mistake.

AKA, trip-tight 7 to 9, goodbye run-sucking safety, I'll take six and the ballgame.

Bryce needs to quit acting like he knows what the hell he's talking about.
