Wannstedt stepping down. I guess if you put in your place by Uconn, its time to hang it up.

Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt is out after six seasons leading his alma mater, a source close to Wannstedt told ESPN.com.

Wannstedt will announce his resignation on Tuesday night and remain in the athletic department in a non-coaching capacity.

Offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. is expected to be named interim coach and lead the Panthers in the BBVA Compass Bowl against Kentucky.

Wannstedt went 42-31 at Pittsburgh and won 10 games last season. But this year, with the Panthers picked as heavy favorites to win the Big East, Pitt stumbled to a 7-5 record. The team did win a share of the Big East title but blew a two-game lead in the standings and was blown out at home by rival West Virginia with the BCS bid on the line.

I bet ESPN now has an expert suggesting that Pitt call Bob Stoops to gauge his interest.

 Why don't they ever throw some other school's coach's name out there

When I heard Wannstedt was out, my first thought was, "Too bad it didn't happen a day earlier and Kevin Wilson might have gone for that job instead of the Big 10 equivalent of (the old) Baylor." Today I learned a few more details that make me think Pitt is the last place anyone would want to coach at least for the present.

The Pitt AD is Pederson, that former AD from Nebraska who hired Callahan. A real stand up guy, Pederson. He didn't fire Wannstedt, instead forced him to resign and take a job as a special assistant. It seems a few months ago the U. Pitt gave Dave a contract extension till 2014. Pederson can't fire him now unless he is willing want to make a major cash outlay to Wannstedt. So rather than letting him pursue another coaching position (DW made his name as a defensive coordinator in the NFL and there are teams that could use him right now), he forced him to take a meaningless position, probably hoping he will voluntarily walk and let them off the hook.

What a scumbag.

Pederson infamously fired Frank Solich, proclaiming that they weren't going to surrender the Big 12 to Texas and Oklahoma or some sh!t like that.

Then, to replace (Dr. Ozzy-endorsed) Solich, Pederson conducted the search on his own, not seeking input from anyone. After virtually everyone turned down the job (most notably the Nutter, still in Arkansas at the time), he settled for... yup, effing hillbilly himself, the Callyburger.

Happy ending: Getting blown out at their Homecoming, fans walk out before halftime, a halftime when they're honoring an Ozzy championship team. Concessions at a record low, those d@mn balloons for the first touchdown don't get released till the second half (the fourth quarter, if I recall correctly), Nebraska immediately fired Pederson and replaced him with Tom Osbourn.

I, too, was thinking this would have been better for Wilson than IU, then I read about Pederson. Ugh, what a tool.

Heh, from the hater's guide this year on deadspin-

15. Pittsburgh: Doesn't this town have the Steelers? No one ****ing cares about the college team. No wonder Wannstedt is still your head coach. A ****ing moose in a trenchcoat could walk the sidelines for your team and no one would notice.

Wonder what this means. Will he be the head helmet sticker putter onner?

Not sure I agree with that. As a Pittsburgher for the past 13 years, I can tell you that these folks here do love uPitt.. When there were a few decent seasons the stadium sold out.. Mediocre football has killed them lately. If they can get a program that fans could be excited about, i promise you a big following.. Football is king in Pittsburgh.. It's a drinking town with a football problem..

Then what you and the rest of the Pitt fans should be doing is blogging about getting rid of Pedersen. As I have posted several times, I was never a big fan of Dave Wannstedt as a head coach (as an aside, I see the same character displayed by Will Muschamp which causes no end to my delight at the thought that the whorns would actually turn their program over to him!), because he is a little too emotional, too quick to go ballistic. Remove your AD and maybe Pitt can get a decent coach.
