'A Date Which Will Live in Infamy'

We lived in HI for 4 years, but I only did the USS Arizona tour one time, after that I would just drop off whoever was visiting us and pick them up when they were done. It just broke my heart, so many amazing stories of heroism and loss from that day. If you ever get the chance, you should go, you'll never forget it.

FYI, if any of you have family with WWII connections, you can get an actual flag that was flown over the USS Arizona. It comes with a certificate of authenticity, and is quite affordable. Sometimes you can choose the date you want, flags from 12/7 are obviously the ones in highest demand. You can find more info here :

Vet, I just meant that to mean, a person who might want or appreciate the flag because it would mean something special to them.

Anyone can get a flag, you don't have to be a vet or anything. You can also request specific dates for the flag to fly, etc.

At dawn we slept. Yet again at 9/11. May it never be again.

Honored to say I have visited this place where so many brave lost their life for our country defending her. Truly life changing.

It just amazes me that in just 4 years during WWII, we showed the world who was the greatest country on Earth. Those guys didn't mess around back then. Today, it takes us a decade or more to defeat our enemies and even that isn't guaranteed. What happened to us?

Amen to OP. I am currently watching the HBO miniseries The Pacific which deals with the aftermath of the Perl harbor attack, and the war against Japan in the pacific. I recommend it.

I spent 7 summers on Oahu. Each summer I visited the Memorial with different groups of people. Very moving.

I called my grandpa, who served in the Pacific in WWII and spent a bunch of time in HI, while I was at the Memorial. I miss those calls as he passed away a few years ago.

also, a story like pat tillman's wasnt all that rare, back then. they didnt even have a baseball league... guys like dimaggio just figured it was their duty.

o how our youth are coddled, today.

Careful with criticizing the youth, all of you parents. It's not the youth's fault there were only a handful of Green Berets at Tora Bora, with Bin Laden in sight. The whole US military should have been there, and bin laden should have not been allowed to escape to Pakistan.

It's not the youth's fault we give billions of $$ to Pakistan which in turn supports the Taliban with the same money we give them.

Only a "handful of Green Berets at Tora Bora with Bin Laden in sight?"

You're nuts. At Tora Bora, there were two battalions of infantry from the 101st Airborne Division, Army/Navy/AF SOF, German/Danish/Australian SOF and all the USAF/USMC/USN close air support in the theater.

And UBL was most definitely not "in sight." Trust me.

On Hickam AFB, which is just adjacent to Pearl, they still use a lot of the buildings and hangars that were there in the 40's. You can drive along the flight line and see all the bullet holes in the buildings, they've intentionally never been repaired.
