Only a damn yankee could say anything bad about Robert E. Lee,who lead a valiat derense against invading hordes for four years.Outnumbered,out gunned,snd undersupplied he nearly defeated the unwashed heathen of the north. Damn yankees.

Simple...

He was a hero to his home state of Virginia and eventually all of the Confederate south until the war was over and they were defeated. He still remained a hero to most of the south after the war.

But he was a traitor to his country, in terms of the US. He was trained for and served in the US Army (his men arrested John Brown at H Ferry). He was offered the lead position in the army but declined.

A hero to me but a bit of a traitor as well. Life is often more gray than Black and White...or Union blue.
