View Full Version : OU band vs 'shutup shutup'

Apparently they played a 'shut up shut up' song over the PA anytime OU band played Boomer Sooner?

Link to OP.com thread (http://www.orangepower.com/showthread.php?t=110619)

Watching it on TV you couldn't tell - they miked both bands and we could only hear Boomer Sooner repeated constantly after plays. I was picturing OSU fans melting down at hearing Boomer Sooner so much... but it sounds like the PA guy found a more annoying and repetitive song to annoy its fans with instead.

Anyone who was there wanna recap? Also, I'm not familiar with this 'shutup shutup' song. Can anyone provide an audio/video link of this tune?

The paddles are VERY high-schoolish. And also lame.

The piped-in music in between plays is classless. Colleges are supposed to encourage sportsmanship. oSu's admin is eaten up with OU envy, and they don't really care how silly they look.

Honestly, it seems like I mostly heard Boomer Sooner over the tv most of the time. I do remember hearing that dorky song they play when they are doing the waving wheat thing after the scored a couple of different times, but all I recall hearing over the PA was a couple of abortive attempts at playing Jump Around.

In fact, given that you can't get any of our school songs as a ringtone in iTunes, I may just make "Shut Up" my new ringtone.http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/982I6vVB/998659.jpg

It's okie st. What do you except. We scored 47 points and had many great plays on defense, so that's why you heard boomer sooner so often. They couldn't stop the team so they had to shout down the band with childish music.

my whole family was at the game. the Wife Unit, an aggie, God bless her, was embarrassed for the entire OSU program. After evaluating the classless PA and the paddles, and pretty much the entire experience, she now is considering writing the administration on how classless they are in the way they go about their business.

Just reading about it, I am really surprised that they did it. Like I mentioned, it didn't show up on national TV because the bands were miked, not the PA system. If they really wanted to cancel out the OU band, why not just have their band play? I am trying to picture how a "shut up, shut up" song would sound, and for some reason, all I can imagine is Ashlee Simpson and her LOL song... lame.

This is as silly as calling the opponents "the visitors." Seriously - PA noise to cancel out a band. Get a life.

Your band was seated in the NE corner of the stadium. I was on the south side, just west of mid-field. I heard that damn song over and over again. I don't want to hear *our* songs that much, let along yours. Sure, if your team does something good, fine, play it. But it was any and all situations...one yard gain for OU, OU punting, OU touchdown, OSU first downs. The bad part of it was that even though our music guys played the shutup song, I could still hear B.S., which made things a jumbled, loud mess of sound. Yuck.

Some friends of mine sit on the north side. They said other than at halftime (during the OU band's performance), they couldn't hear B.S. at all. Lucky bastards.

On a related note, when your band plays something other than "it", they are damn good. I enjoyed the halftime show.

I understand your quandary, but can you imagine if you did that to Texas A&M's yell leaders when they visited Stillwater earlier this year any time they started yells.

The peaceful solution would have been to have your athletic department meet with ours before the game to discuss excessive Boomer playing. That would have been the adult thing to do. Instead, your athletic department chose "shut up shut up" reportedly.

Some of your fans might say they get treated like crap in Norman, but your band will never, ever endure something like that at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, even if they play "Ride Ride" nonstop.

Do y'all really not know the history behind the non-stop playing of Boomer Sooner at LosuR? What you are about to read is true. The game ball referenced was in Coach's office. I don't know if it stayed with the office or if Coach took it with him. But anyway...

During the 1983 Bedlam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedlam) game at Oklahoma State (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_State_University_%28Stillwater%29) in Stillwater (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillwater,_Oklahoma), the Sooners fell behind 20-3 early in the 4th quarter. Stillwater police took Thrailkill off the field for not having a sideline pass. Incensed, Thrailkill told the Pride to "start playing and don't stop until we're ahead!" The band complied, and played "Boomer Sooner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomer_Sooner)" non-stop – and after roughly 300 times, the Sooners were ahead 21-20. Barry Switzer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Switzer) and the Sooners awarded the Pride the game ball, and labeled it "The Day The Pride Won" as proof.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pride_of_Oklahoma_Marching_Band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pride_of_Oklahoma_Marching_Band#cite_note-Sooner_Mag-1)

In fact, The King and many of the players came to The Pride's rehearsal the following Monday, and presented the game ball to Coach.

THAT'S why The Pride never stops playing vs. LosuR. It's also why LosuR fans have an allergic reaction upon hearing it.

Thanks for the link! Slightly OT...Reading about the '87 Sudler Trophy award reminded me of something I keep meaning to ask you Prides on SF. Do ANY of you know where I can get that year's version of "Boomer Sooner"? It's hands-down the BEST-performed version in the history of the world. The tempo, the balance, the blend...Perfection. If any of you can suggest possible directions in which to look for that version, this daughter of an awesome alto clarinetist will be hugely grateful.

I know all about the history, but enough. There is this concept called "overdoing it."

I'm not sure if opposing schools all charge visiting bands for tickets, but if I had to assume, they do, and it usually comes out of the obligatory visiting school's ticket allotment.

So, not only do they have to give up about 300 tickets from donors to seat the band, but our school also has to pay $125 a head (as per OSU ticket policy for single-game gooner tix for visiting fans) for band members to attend this away game, in addition to transportation and food costs.

At least $40,000 to bring the OU band to Stillwater, and you think there's a such thing as "overdoing it?" Hell, I call this OU getting its money's worth for bringing the band!

Every team and fans complain about our band playing Boomer Sooner all the time. It would drive me bananas too. Like a barking dog that will not shut up. But, we love to hear it and they could play it all they want as far as we are concerned.

During a game the other fans start to hear it after good plays, run 3 yards they have to hear BOOMER SOONER then what happens they start to get mad at thier own team if they lets the Sooners run even 2 yards because, yes, they have to hear B O O M E R

Part of the tragedy to drive the other fans nuts. Our band is the 12 man. I love them. Thanks you guys I know you put in a lot of practice you sound great!

Silly agroids. The difference between our AD and their AD is night and day, as are the bands. OSU's band is terrible. Keep in mind, the "state's band" used mics in the 80s to try and sound louder than the Pride. Didn't work.

We offer to play their fight song when they visit Norman. I believe they've rejected that offer the past few years. Old Pride members will tell you Coach Thrailkill always said "we're going to play their fight song, and play it better than they ever could." So true.

Didn't OSU go whining to the NCAA over this? As I recall that is why there is a CFB rule that the band can't play when the opposing team is on offense. It sounds like a lOSUr crying stunt! Therefore, if true, Pistol Pete has shot himself in the a$$ yet again.

1. We hate Aggies.

3. Therefore, we love the Pride.

And for y'all's information, the Pride used to have a hell of a lot of stand tunes and cheers that we would play between downs. Now pretty much all of them have been dropped in favor of either a variant of Boomer Sooner OR the damn drumline playing nonstop.

And the whole point of the band playing Boomer Sooner blew right by you! They aren't doing it to annoy the pokes, although I am sure it does. The fight song for ANY school is played to fire up the team's fans, the TEAM, and get school spirit intensified on all counts.

Nice story, but it don't jive.

Don't we only do that when the other team doesn't bring their band?

I believe the Pride played Kansas fight song in 2008 and Kansas bought thier travel pep band.

I must share this story with Sooner Nation.

A friend of mine who is a big OU Booster buried his daughter this past friday. When the funeral ended and the casket was being taken out of the church, low and behold the Sooner Band began playing BOOMER SOONER, all 800+ who attended broke out singing BOOMER SOONER. I was so proud to be an OU grad and a OU fan.

Bob told the father, we'll win this game for Taar.

The Pride of Oklahoma and the Sooner football team brought home a OU SOONER win for Tara!!!

Right.

1. We annoy them.

2. They key our cars.

3. We can't understand why.

Somewhere the notion of sportsmanship got lost in the discussion.

We could hug them after our game every year and they would still hate us Leroy Troll person.

Do y'all really not know the history behind the non-stop playing of Boomer Sooner at LosuR? What you are about to read is true. The game ball referenced was in Coach's office. I don't know if it stayed with the office or if Coach took it with him. But anyway...

During the 1983 OU-OSU game at Oklahoma State in Stillwater, the Sooners fell behind 20-3 early in the 4th quarter. Stillwater police took Thrailkill off the field for not having a sideline pass. Incensed, Thrailkill told the Pride to "start playing and don't stop until we're ahead!" The band complied, and played "Boomer Sooner" non-stop – and after roughly 300 times, the Sooners were ahead 21-20. Barry Switzer and the Sooners awarded the Pride the game ball, and labeled it "The Day The Pride Won" as proof.
I always heard the quote as "Play Boomer 'til we win". Either way, it's a great little piece of Sooner history.

Cool, my grandfather is in the first pic on this Wiki page!

In fact, The King and many of the players came to The Pride's rehearsal the following Monday, and presented the game ball to Coach.

THAT'S why The Pride never stops playing vs. LosuR. It's also why LosuR fans have an allergic reaction upon hearing it.
And there's the perfect reasoning for playing it as often we do regardless of the leetle leezard thinks. WTH are you doing in the green, anyway... someone forget to neg you to hilt?

I get far more green than red. So why am I usually red? Dunno. Don't care.

Think back to any time we play usuc, and their band incessantly plays that 4 note "song" with the tuba, and maybe some other horns...YE GODS, is that ever annoying!

And for y'all's information, the Pride used to have a hell of a lot of stand tunes and cheers that we would play between downs. Now pretty much all of them have been dropped in favor of either a variant of Boomer Sooner OR the damn drumline playing nonstop.

Why did they do this? I remember in the '80's the Pride always playing cool "Go Big Red" tunes. A couple of "Eat'em Up, Eat'em Up" Rah-Rah tunes. It was great. Now they're kinda boring. Well, not really kinda, they're all the way boring.

The best way to keep the band from playing is for the defense to force 3 and outs on the offence execute every drive. OSU is incapable of ever doing that to OU so they will just have to deal with it. I love the song myself!!!!!! Plus our "shut up" which was personified by our victory is a much louder "shut up" then they could ever play on a speaker!

Why the hell is this an argument between Sooner fans?

1. We hate Aggies.

2. The Pride annoys Aggies.

3. Therefore, we love the Pride.

Now, I like the drumline, but last home game I was at, the drumline played by themselves for 90% of the game, and that's just silly.

I miss the old tunes and cheers from The Pride. Somewhere, they got lost in the mix.

We ran over 100 plays and had 28 1st downs and 35+ minutes TOP. They ran like 60 plays. Our band isn't allowed to play while they have the ball, but they didn't have it much.

If they don't like our band, maybe they should scrap their XBOX offensive gameplan and learn some ball control techniques.

Just sayin'. And the fact they they are making such an issue of it tells me that we shoudn't change a thing.

I love this thread!!! My son is a trumpeter, 2nd yr of Pride...and from my perspective and thru him.....even the Pride gets really tired of playing Boomer Sooner....However, they will continue to play often and frequently for the players and the fans....and since it does cost alot to get them there, I agree, get your moneys worth.....The full pride travelled (7 chartered busses) to the Texas, Texas A&M and Stillwater games...also, those schools bring their full bands to Norman when played there....the rest of the games are pep bands (Approx. one third of the band).....of course, full band to championship games and bowls.......And let me tell you how much time and practice goes into that one credit class throughout the week.....UNBELIEVABLE!!!! LET THEM PLAY THOSE HORNS!!!! And the football players LOVE it!!!

I've got it. What's your email?

Yeah the drumline actually used dynamics in that version.

I like hearing the drum cadence to the Immigrant Song, because it reminds me of the Sooner fans and team getting into it at the Sugar Bowl. That was a fun game... too bad we lost!

Unfortunately it's not working. I think you have to log in to Dropbox, and I don't have an account. If you have another way to post it, I'd love to hear it. Or if ths is the only way, well, I may just have to sign up for Dropbox, which probably wouldn't be a bad idea anyway. :)

OK. So now what we need is for someone to save that mp3 on another site with a completely different URL. Then make a post on orangepuker.com - something to the effect that OU is getting into trouble or somesuch; something guaranteed to make the pukes click the link - and post the new link to Boomer Sooner. Enjoy the ensuing apoplexy while it lasts.
