My fiance mentioned needing impact *something* for working on our Jeep.

I want to get it for him for Christmas...Is this what he's talking about? I think he said impact driver.

Bowel? Maybe or do you get that from riding in a Jeep?

Depends on if he's wanting an air wrench (like you'd see or hear when your tire is being taken off at the tire shop--Vroom, Vroom) or a cordless impact driver like the home depot link you posted. If he has other cordless drills, the most important thing may be matching up battery types: i.e. if you get him a 14 volt impact wrench by Dewalt and everything else he has is 18 volt lithium from Rigid, it's not a great fit.

My vote for cordless impact drivers are the Makitas. Great battery life, lightweight, led light, durable. Don't know about the air wrenches.

His other tools are 18v Ryobi - I'll be sure to match. Really appreciate the help! Now I know how he probably felt when he was picking out a ring!

probably want to get a 3/8 drive instead of the 1/4 drive in your picture. The 1/4 drive is too small to do most automotive related jobs.

Good point as well. I'm still not entirely certain if he's wanting a cordless impact or an air wrench (also an impact wrench). Does he have an air compressor?

You might want him to circle his favorites out of a tool catalog or something. Just a dude looking out for another of my kind. By the by, an easy pick for essential tools (and relatively cheap too) has to be an 11 in 1 Klein screwdriver.

A cordless impact wrench vs. an air-powered one is like comparing a BB-gun to a 30.06.

If you really aren't sure and don't want to ask him again, just get a gift certificate and tell him to have fun shopping. Or at least let him know that you won't be offended if it's not exactly what he wanted and needs to return it for something else.

You can get an air-powered impact wrench for about $50 at Lowes. The cordless (battery powered) ones cost about 6 times that and probably don't work as well.

Just saying. If he doesn't have an air compressor, get him one of those too for the difference in price. :)

Does he have an air compressor? It wouldn't do him any good to get the air-powered impact wrench if he doesn't. I know, I might be stating the obvious, but just saying. I wouldn't have anything other than the air powered one.

Here is a craftsman. I have one just like it, been working great for years:

But don't buy this online, go directly to sears. They have an excellent 30 day guarantee in case it's not what he wants. I've taken lots of things back, never once got turned down.

If he wants it for working on a Jeep go to an auto repair store like Autozone, Pep Boys etc. You can get an entire set of air tools at Steve's Wholesale for cheap.

Those little cordless impact drivers are cool and work great, but are for completely different types of jobs than the bigger 1/2" drive air wrench. They're basically high powered screw guns.

The electric (not cordless) 1/2" drive impact wrenches such as this (http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DW290-2-Inch-Heavy-Duty-Electric/dp/B0000224KD) work really well unless you use them constantly every day. For a part time worker on-er type guy they're great. I have had one for about 10 years and still use it when I have a cord out and don't want to string the air hose. If he has a good high volume compressor, get an air, though.

I bet he's wanting one of the small ones, since they're the newest coolest thing nowadays.

Advice from another woman: If you don't even know what it's called, don't go buy it for him. Get a gift certificate. If you DO buy it for him, make sure you give him the receipt too because he probably already knows exactly which one he wants.

Give him a $30,000 Snap-on Tool Gift Certificate. He get at least 10-15 tools he can use on the jeep and next year if you do it again....he'll be able to get the tool box to put them in.

I've always heard that the best tool with which to fix a Jeep was a LandCruiser.

And while that wrench only cost $400, it's good to know that if it ever fails they will replace it. And at no cost to boot!
