this is the new formation that we installed this week. it has similar principles to the wishbone in that you are trying to collapse a lot of players into the middle and either power over them or race them to the edge. it also has the same weaknesses as the wishbone -> ie the defense by alignment can dictate what running back gets the ball (in this case i'd think the fullback).

the first thing we notice is that baylor's defense is misaligned. in order to bracket broyles they have the safety and the corner stacked on the weak side of the formation. this isn't that big of a deal except that the whole line is shifted towards the wide side of the field, thus they are basically lining up 3 guys on that side leaving the short side 2 defenders short. this puts us in a 7 blocker vs 7 defender situation.

the thing to take from this is that the key to this formation is your best wide receiver. if you don't have one, they'll just single coverage on the top and then outnumber your run game.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay2.PNG

now you see baylor further mess up their defensive alignment. not only do they have 3 guys responsible for broyles, the free safety also begins to cheat that way - effectively leaving 6 defenders vs 7 blockers (and the ball carrier).

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay3.PNG

blocking scheme, we actually have one free lineman who can take his pick of who to block.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay4.PNG

one block executed by millard. 3 to go. our lineman who could get the free safety decides to camp on the linebacker in case the block is blown. notice the 3 baylor guys that got eliminated by positioning and are just at this point trailing the play.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay5.PNG

the block was blown but our other lineman is there to lock out the linebacker. notice murray at this point, this is what makes him so good. he sets up the defender by slowing down so that the defender can't shoot past finch to make a shoestring tackle. by freezing him, he allows finch to get into his legs and then he scoots right back inside of the block. finch will be like this as a junior/senior but he just doesn't run with subtelty yet.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay6.PNG

finch gets his block and murray shoots up inside of it. there is only one non-engaged bear that can tackle him and that is the free safety. if murray took off outside then he would have been pushed out at the 5, but what he does is presses the inside so that the corner being blocked by stills has to try to fight over stills and the safety has to flatten out his angle.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay7.PNG

the safety has flattened out and is no longer a threat. so murray at this point is just setting up the corner. he wants to go outside but he has to give stills enough leverage to not allow the corner a clean shot at him. so he now presses slightly to the outside causing the corner to lose a little leverage in his chickenfight.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay8.PNG

stills gets another 1/2 yard of push when murray closes in. at this point, murray could power his way in but he keeps pressing hte inside before the cut at the 5.

http://www.ouportal.com/Portals/0/BU2RunningPlay9.PNG

he swings outside and the defender is at the 2 yard line. there is zilch point nothing chance of stopping him.

We only ran it inside the red zone, and that makes sense to me. There, the D can't spread out too deep and chase our guys down sideline to sideline as freely. We can also take advantage of the fact that every one of the RBs is a pass receiving threat. The diversity of RB style is also a plus.

the fact that murray did all that on pure instinct amazes me. i think most people dont truly appreciate how great he really is. they know he is good, but when i look back at his career, i see one of the greatest players of the stoops era.

yeah, i just spent way more time than i'd like getting the DNS record on the nameservers set up right. i also had to set up a special DMZ to get past whatever appliance they have that was borking up the hot linking.

so now the 4th down stop. we know that box made the final play, but looking at it a little closer you'll see that someone else actually blew it up and box just cleaned it up.

http://pics.ouportal.com/BURunningPlay1.png

lewis has this annoying habit of trying to "mug", which means standing up at the line of scrimmage. there just isn't any point to this technique unless you back off. it plays to the lineman's strengths and negates any agility advantage that you might have. notice beal on outside leverage on the end

http://pics.ouportal.com/BURunningPlay2.png

beal hops inside pre-snap. this causes a lot of confusion on the baylor OL. the ball is snapped at this point and you see our interior linemen trying to make a pile by submarining the OL. the guys on the end haven't moved.

http://pics.ouportal.com/BURunningPlay3.png

beal makes an inside move and actually takes up 3 blockers (confusion).

other things to notice:

1. some linemen are on the baylor side of the LOS
2. carter and box are clean
3. there is a lot of green to the top side with a free blocker to take on the defender.

http://pics.ouportal.com/BURunningPlay4.png

circling the 3 guys that are taking out beal which leaves box free. box is scraping down the LOS and is almost in position. the safety on the edge goes up the field to cut off the sideline funneling the ball carrier to the LOS.

note: this is actually lewis's gap. his head is at the bottom of the circle being pushed about 5 yards out of it.

http://pics.ouportal.com/BURunningPlay5.png

box surges into the hole. notice that box has went 2 yards since the last frame and the running back has gone 2 yards (this is good). carter has manged to move about a yard because he's dancing around the pile instead of pursuing. in his defense, he has bottom side contain so he's supposed to play cautious in case of cutback.

http://pics.ouportal.com/BURunningPlay6.png

form tackle with 4 shirts around the ball. i have no idea how this particular run blitz was designed so i'm not sure if lewis was supposed to just be a decoy for box. based on our other patterns though, i seriously doubt it. great play by box that was made possible by a great penetration by beal.

Can Wort learn what Box knows? Does it take time or does Box just get it?

It takes time. Wort tends to make a rookie mistake by coming too hard and too fast and isn't under control at the time he meets the RB. Then he either isn't in propper tackling form or took the wrong angle, or runs himself out of the play. The back cuts back on him resulting in Wort just getting a piece of him. Wort is getting better and better at this in every game and with time will be a very good LB.

Is it your opinion that both Box and Lewis were in the wrong gaps but Box got lucky?

Or was the scheme for two backers to be in the same gap?
