View Full Version : The Diamond T is not a New Formation

oldkoot

Dear fellow Sooners, the new formation this OU team used against Baylor is not a NEW FORMATION. It was called the Diamond T when Fairbanks used it while Steve Owens was winning his H T.

However, when the Sooners of that era ran it, they used it as a power formation and also an option formation. It has many, many possibilities.

It was not the only formation Steve ran from, but was one of them. Imagine having Steve Owens and two big tight ends lined up in that formation and going off tackle, hard to stop with the proper OL.

OSU did not originate this formation, Chick Fairbanks did during the days of Steve Owens. However, it is fair to say that OSU and now OU are running different plays from it than we did back in the 60s.

You are wrong. Everything OSU runs was invented by Holgerson before this season because he's a genius.

Maybe you should send it to your own offensive coordinator since he is the one crediting OSU. Or, are you saying he is a bumbling sheephumper who reads OP.com?

Also, the new twist is that the formation in the Holgerson version is being run with the quarterback in the shotgun.

As much crap as you guys give us for being little brother etc if you can't see the humor in your OC crediting us with a formation that he is now using then you just aren't any fun.

Hope it is a good, injury free game.

Aggie Offensive coordinator is very good. I don't think anyone here is denying him that and heck if he came up with the new wrinkle more power to him. At least Wilson showed people he was open to some new things which i was beginning to wonder. I'm pretty happy.

hey, first time the Sooners used it I said it looked like one the cowboys have used this season. The guy sitting in front of me quickly nodded; he recognized it as well.

Success breeds imitation. So what? Whatever it takes to win. Now if OU could just figure out how to consistently imitate the pokes kicking touchbacks...

I don't think anyone was suggesting KW invented it and rolled it out for the world last night. Just that it was new to the OU offense which, frankly, is a big step all by itself. Anything that shows the coaches are going to expand their repertoire, and in particular use formations that can disguise what's coming and where it's going, is very welcome and exciting.

Honestly, it doesn't mean a thing to me if KW says he picked up the idea from the Pokes. It matters to me that it works and that we're seeing new ideas showing up.

I ran the Diamond T as a high school quarterback. We used it for sloppy field conditions and ran the two up backs into a hole for the tailback to follow mostly. Wish we had used it more. This would have been 1970.

This is why you can't say nice things to the Pokes. They tend to make mountains out of molehills.

And just for the pokies lurking around here, OU doesn't care where an idea originates as long as it works. Barry Switzer implemented the Wishbone because * was having success with it. OU then proceeded to whoop * *** with their own formation just like they will the Pokes with the Diamond T.

For the OP. Just because OU used the formation 40 years ago during the Fairbanks era does not mean that OSU did not invent it.

Rumor is that Fairbanks stole that formation while driving to a game in Stillwater. On the way past a sheep farm, he saw 11 Cowboys cornering sheep.....using that alignment to corner sheep. True story.
