It's not just a coincindence that the opening chords are the same, but it's an amazing coincidence that Zeppelin had toured with Spirit...

One has to take into consideration the power of suggestion in the video, and even with that I didn't see the artistic plagiarism. There's nothing new under the sun; everybody is rearranging old songs and passing them as new.

Yes, he changed the key and the tempo to get them to match. Still, the chord progression and melody are similar in the chorus for about 10 bars, but that's it. If you listen to the verses of the two songs, they are very different, but the similar chorus is a natural extension of each. The beat, the chord progression and the melody are all very common and simple, so it's no surprise that they might reoccur from time to time.

that's an outright cover though :D

and that Zeppelin thing isn't surprising. Jimmy Page plays a lot of blues stuff, and they always borrow phrasing all over the place. it's probably an homage or something.

Worst cover ever? Not even close. I was in Starbucks the other day and they had one of those compilation of covers playing. One lady was singing Roxy Music's "More than This" and I lost my appetite.

And every cover of Gary Numan's "Cars" has been horrid. (But then again, that is a song that is impossible to cover. Love the original, although it ranks down near #20 of my favorite Numan songs.)

Coincidental? I think someone from the band was familiar with Alan Parson's song, but that's about it. Call it an influence, not a ripoff.

which means that stealing the melody, rhythm, and chord changes makes it a rip off.

The two songs are not that similar. If I didn't have the power of suggestion, I would think "The song sounds a little like Eye in the Sky." But that's about it.

It isn't as bad as Lenny Kravitz' ripoff of Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun."
