I can't begrudge Cliff. He apparently loved pitching in Philly and didn't want to leave when he got traded to Seattle exactly one year ago.

When I heard the Phils were the 'mystery team' that Jon Heyman of SI was talking about, I got a sinking feeling.

But I also wasn't completely sold on the idea of signing a 32 year old pitcher, who's been great in his only two post seasons, to a 6 year deal.

If you look at some of the long term deals that have been handed out to some of the biggest names at this position, only CC's been able to really deliver. Barry Zito didn't even make the Giants post season roster this year and AJ Burnett is turning into a bust for the Yankees.

At the very least, this gives the club the flexibility to give extensions to CJ, Hambone, and Andrus. And they still have a deep farm system.

With two compensatory picks since Cliff signed elsewhere.

texaspokieokie
12/14/2010, 12:07 PM
Cliff Lee's regular season last year wasn't worth the $20 mil. range. mostly
just post season & then not good in WS.

kind of an "ego" thing for Ryan & rangers.

6 or 7 years can never be predicted, especially fo pitchers.

dodgers blew 105 mil on brown.

I'm okay with this deal from a Royals perspective. It filled in some gaps in RH pitching and up the middle. It's not like the Royals were going to contend next year anyway, and Greinke is a little bit of a headcase, so who knows if he stays fully wound in KC the next couple of years.

Ranger's top options at pitching are trade for Matt Garza, or attempt to sign Carl Pavano or Brandon Webb. I like the prospect of Webb even though he his coming off injury. He was a Cy Young winner in 06 and could be a rather cheap get. Trade for Garza and sign Webb.

Ranger's looking to lock Beltre in for 5 years with a 6th year option. Michael Young has already agreed to move to utility INF and DH meaning Guerrero will not be resigned. Tough loss, but big gain. Ranger's will have best left side infield in MLB and solid lineup. Andrus, Young, Beltre, Hamilton, Cruz, Kinsler, Murphy, Moreland, Torrealba. Can't wait til April!

Rangers will be better with Beltre as opposed to Guerreo, beltre is a whole player, not just dh.

maybe young could be regular 1st base.

Sad to see Big Vlad go, but if Beltre is a very, very solid add and shores up the liability Young was at 3rd Base. Think Young will be a solid DH/Super Utility guy.

Nice move by the Rangers overall.

Definitely wouldn't mind seeing the Rangers make a move for the one and only Jim Thome. You could prob. get him for something in the $4-5MM range which is a little pricey, but that would be one hell of a DH to have. He wouldn't have to play everyday either. You'd just put him in against right handers. The guy can still absolutely crush a baseball.

Some team player he is considering this is his 2nd trade request in 24 months.

ouleaf
2/10/2011, 02:11 PM
Young becomes a 10-5 rule guy in May, so if the Rangers are going to trade him, they better do it before then when he can somewhat dictate where he goes.

I hope he stays and can accept his reduced role and just be happy with the 48MM or whatever it is he is due over the next 3 years. He is an important leader on the team, but at the same time it won't be devastating if he leaves. There are a group of young guys that can step in and be the face of the Rangers as well as Nolan Ryan.

Frank Catalonotto was a pretty good hitter in his early 30's, but quickly nosedived after the 2008 season.

Got cut in spring training in 2009 and didn't return to baseball.

Michael Young's metrics mirror his.

And as such, there's no team out there that will do this deal unless the Rangers take on a significant portion of his salary.

From a production standpoint, he can be replaced. It's the financial side that bugs me.

And yes, Young needs to accept his reduced role. He'll be the best paid utility man in baseball if he stays in Texas.

catalanotto doesn't compare too much to young. BA is close, but FC hardly ever played in as many games as MY.

his season high for hits was 153 & over 100 hits only 4 times.
not nearly as many HRs (which i don't think are that important) or RSbi.

however, i agree that MY would have a good chance of falling into obscurity
if he left the Rangers.
FC did play a few games in 2010, but hit only >160.

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Chuck Greenberg will step down from his post as CEO and managing general partner of the Texas Rangers, two sources confirmed Friday.

It will end a seven-month stay for Greenberg at the post, though he worked for more than a year prior in his eventually successful pursuit to buy the club.

Club president Nolan Ryan flew back to Texas Friday morning and could not be reached for reaction. General manager Jon Daniels said he had no comment.

An official announcement is expected as soon as Friday.

Rangers ship off C - Matt Treanor for cash.

Thought this was interesting....Napoli is now the sole backup catcher behind Torrealba....this should mean less DH time for Napoli and more DH time for Young.

Also think the Rangers made a good move in keeping Feliz as the closer for this year....The bullpen has not been very good at all this spring, and it might be the worst bullpen in the AL if it weren't for keeping Neftali as closer.

Sucks that the gamble on Webb hasn't worked out, and now Hunter goes down so you lose another starting pitcher. Probably move Ogando to that No. 4 or No. 5 starter, which takes away from the bullpen even more.

Ranger's bats are really going to need to be on fire out of the gates if the pitching staff can't get it together right away.
