All the talk about the upcoming Marcus Dupree show got me to thinking about Buster Rhymes, another guy with explosive potential.

My memory is horrible, but it seems to me that he ran a kickoff back for a TD on his first touch as a Sooner. Correct? I was at the game, or probably would not remember that.

I also thought he had been kicked off the team at some point for stealing a teammate's stereo. I may be confused here. Tried to do some web research and saw this quote on OU Insider:

DeMarco Murray became is only the second player in Oklahoma history to surpass 1,000 yards in three categories: He has 3,223 rushing yards, 126 receptions for 1,268 receiving yards and 1,358 return yards. His all-purpose total is 5,849. George “Buster” Rhymes (1980-84) is the only other Sooner to accomplish the feat with 1,158 rushing yards, 1,118 receiving yards and 1,237 kick return yards. Rhymes finished with 3,800 all-purpose yards.

This seems to indicate Buster was on the team for four years. Anyone got a good memory of his time at OU?

I read that he's also been arrested for carjacking, robbery, and puffing crack while driving in the last several years.

I was in school then. He was definitely out of control. He's the one that fired his assault weapon from the dorm fire escape stairs. He wanted to stop the snowball fight happening in the athletic parking lot. His car was in danger of getting hit by snowballs.

At least he had a good reason then. Depending on whether the snowballs were icy they could have left a scratch.

From Wikipedia:

In 2004, he was convicted of carjacking, and, in a separate incident, possession of crack cocaine.[1]

Sheesh. Kinda figured something like that. Sad.

He did get kicked off of the team and, as I remember it, when he came back was moved from running back to receiver.

I remember in the early days of ESPN (maybe 1980) OU played Colorado and it was televised. Rhymes went off, I mean crazy-like. Don't remember how many yards and touchdowns he had, but the final score was something like 82-42.

The funny thing is, the rapper above chose his name because of the former OU RB/WR. I saw an interview once when he said he even had an old red shirt with the #4 on it.

The guy was a freak of nature. could bench about 450lbs and was whip thin. Very fast, hands like fruit baskets. Busta, the man with the luster! Great fun to watch. Tragedy of a life after college.

^^^^^^^

This here. We all wanted Buster to be the cool guy that he seemed to be...

The first warning sign was when he got caught swiping Jim Rockford's stereator out of his dorm room.

Kicked off the team for awhile, then came back.

Rumor had it that in the 1985 Orange Bowl game against U of Washington (where he messed up a kickoff) that he was incocainated at the time.

Coke. Carjacking. Minnesota State Prison.

Oh well. Maybe he'll have a different life if he ever gets out of prison. Say a prayer for the guy, and "don't let this happen to someone you love."

and wasn't Rockford his roommate? So in essence, he stole his own roommate's stereo? How in hades did he think he was going to get away with it?
