Will we be better than last year? We had a decent finish at the NCAA tournament I thought.

I noticed that Frank DeAngelo's son is a freshman. Frank was a great wrestler , sometime back in the late 70s or early 80s. Appears to be from Jenks. Frank was originally from NY.

I noticed the Lester brothers were both in the red-white match. I guess they'll be active this year.

I will consider this year a success if we finish top five. Anything less will be a dissappointment. We also need to get one or two in the finals this year.

don't know whether to call Erich Schmidtke an overachiever or a late bloomer.

He's raised some eyebrows early this year by knocking off #5 ranked OSU wrestler in the OCU tourney. expectations are now raised.

How can you not like this kid?

Matt Lester 157 lb.

Pharmacy is his planned major ... Pizza and a Mountain Dew is his favorite meal ... Playing Halo III is his favorite hobby ... His dream job is anything that pays over seven figures ... Alexander the Great is his childhood idol.

You'd never know Nick Lester, 149 lb. is his brother:

Business is his planned major ... Buffalo Wild Wings is his favorite restaurant ... His favorite hobby is watching movies ... The Office is his favorite TV show ... The Caribbean is his favorite vacation destination.

and I'm sure I'm not alone in expecting Jarrod Patterson, defending Big 12 champ at 125, to take it to the next level this year and have an All-America showing at the nationals. I'm predicting a top 5 finish.

BROCKPORT, N.Y.— The eighth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team won its 12th straight Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic title Saturday and remains the only team to ever win the event.
Additionally, five Sooners claimed individual titles and five more garnered top-three finishes.

“I’m proud of our guys,” head coach Jack Spates said. “We had a lot of great performances today.”

The Sooners won the team portion with 145.5 total points. The Sooners closest competition was Rutgers who finished with 124.5 points.

Maryland (101.5), Clarion (95) and Buffalo (89) rounded out the top five.

Recording 4-0 outings on the day to capture individual crowns were Jarrod Patterson (125 pounds), Zack Bailey (141), Matt Lester (157), Tyler Caldwell (174) and Jeff James (184).

Sooners earning second place finishes were Jordan Keller at 133 pounds and Keldrick Hall at 197 pounds.

Additionally, Seth Vernon (149), Erich Schmidtke (184) and Nathan Fernandez (HWT) were each awarded third place finishes.

"I thought it was an outstanding overall effort." Spates said. "We wrestled hard, aggressively and we showed a lot of character. It was a good building block for us."

I hope Nick Lester is OK. The brackets show he lost due to medical forfeit.

There's quite a battle at 184. Jeff James and Erich Schmidtke met in the red-white match with Schmidtke winning and then he whipped a 5th ranked cowpoke in the OCU Open. But James won this tournament with Schmidtke taking 3rd. They did not meet each other.

Good to see Patterson, Bailey, and Caldwell all won. They are the foundation of our team.

one cool thing was that Matt Lester got revenge for his loss in the dual against Buffalo. He whipped the guy 3-0 in the tourney, and went on to win the 157 weight class.

Bailey Claims 141-Pound Title at All-Star Classic
Zack Bailey defeated Ohio's Germane Lindsey to claim the 141-pound title.

Nov. 21, 2010

FRESNO, Calif. -- Oklahoma senior Zack Bailey remains undefeated on the season after defeating Ohio’s fifth-ranked Germane Lindsey in the 45th-annual NWCA All-Star Classic Sunday, in Fresno, Calif., at the Selland Arena.

Bailey, ranked No. 1 among 141 pounders, scored a 3-2 decision over Lindsey to take the 141-pound crown. Bailey is off to a 7-0 start.

“This is a great event and honor to participate in,” head coach Jack Spates said. “Zack wrestled real well and I think it was a real important building block for the year. It was a tough match against a fellow All-American. It was a hard-fought kind of match that develops character and seasoning.

Bailey became the 45th Sooner wrestler to compete in the event and first since 2006 when Matt Storniolo and Sam Hazewinkel both represented the Sooners.

“He scored at the end, which is really important for out guys to be the ones in scoring position at the end to seal the victory,” said Spates. “It was a good win and bodes well for his season.”

Caldwell Tabbed Big 12 Wrestler of the Week
A Sooner was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for the second-consecutive week.

Jan. 24, 2011

NORMAN, Okla. – Tyler Caldwell of the seventh-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team has been chosen as the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

The accolade is a first for the Wichita, Kan., native and the second for the Sooners this season (Nathan Fernandez, Jan. 18).

“We’re really proud of Tyler Caldwell,” Jack Spates said. “First of all he is the epitome of what we speak of as a student-athlete. He was an All-American as a true-freshman and is ranked-fourth in the country now. He carries above a 3.0 GPA and is an extremely hard worker and a young man of great character. He represents the Sooner with great honor.”

Caldwell earned the honor after his performance last Friday, Jan. 21, at Iowa State where the sophomore was instrumental in ending the Sooners eight-match losing streak to the Cyclones after he opened the dual with a decisive 9-1 major decision victory over 10th-ranked Andrew Sorenson. The 165-pound bout was scoreless after the first period, but Caldwell earned a quick escape 0:15 into the period. He added a takedown and back points to take a 5-0 lead. In the third period, the No. 4-ranked Caldwell had a near fall and added 1:13 in riding time to run away with the first bonus points of the evening for the Sooners who won 33-7.

It was a great crowd...Boren, Castiglione, and I believe Kenny Mossman were in attendance.

165: Caldwell looked tough against Bailey. I wouldn't say dominated, but Caldwell didn't seem to be in trouble throughout the match.

174: Benefiel looked very good...Jeff James looked lost. He was also wearing a huge brace on his knee...that might explain his few matches this year.

184: It was 3-3 with about :40 seconds left, and Schmidke gives him the escape. And made zero attempts to take him down. Spates was beside himself when Erich walked off the mat. So was I. Very confusing to say the least.

197: Not only did Clayton look like a dominant wrestler, Kendrick looked completely gassed in the middle of the second period. Clayton will probably be ranked #1 or 2 at the NCAAs.

HWT: Fernandez looked dominant against Rosholt v3.0. And aggressive. One of the more exciting HWT matches in terms of action.

125: Morrison looked every bit the better wrestler. Should make for some interesting matches the next few years.

133: Oliver is one of the more dominant wrestlers in the country. Keeping it to a major decision was a win for OU.

141: I'll make some OSU fans mad, but I felt like Zach was clearly the better wrestler. The score looks close, but I thought it was more of Zach not being mentally alert at all times. I think he wins by four or more at the Biig Twelves.

149: Parks won, but he should have dominated. Lester wasn't close to winning, but if he somehow stole a cheap hip tilt, it could have been interesting.

157: Whoever is in charge of conditioning for OU wrestlers needs to be fired. Chase, like Hall at 197, were stumbling around the mat and completely out of gas by the middle of the second period. It was embarrassing to watch for them.

All in all, a good dual and probably a bit closer than the score suggests. OSU is just a very good team right now. John Smith has them peaking at the right time.

so who won ???
what was the score ??

MiccoMacey
2/21/2011, 06:01 PM
OSU won, 24-9.

It was pretty much a given that OSU would win. We needed to not only win the three we were favored in (Caldwell, Bailey and Fernandez), we needed to win a toss-up or two as well if we wanted to upset OSU. We didn't...we only won three total.

Patterson had already beaten Morrison once this year, but Morrison beat the Wyoming kid that beat Patterson a week ago, and also beat Patterson out of the NCAAs last year. Could have been just a difference of styles, but Morrison has looked good all year. We really needed that win to have any chance as a team.

Chase Nelson looks the part, but he had absolutely no shape yesterday. Not sure how he's won any match unless he pinned his opponent in the first period because he had wobbly legs in the second period.

Schmidke...okay, according to Spates he thought the match was tied. But in all seriousness, Perry looked like the dominant wrestler. Even tied at 3-3, before he cuts Perry, there was little reason to believe Schmidke could beat Perry this time.

hate to be so stupid (can't help it),but who is UB ??

Yeah, I don't see a UB or anything on the schedule between the OSU match and the conference tourney.

Any conjectures of who the new coach will be? Is Sammy Henson considered a viable candidate?

MiccoMacey

Those are from earlier contests...UB is Buffalo.

Look for either Sammie Henson, or a former OU wrestler.

John Johnson and Andre metzger are two name I hear most often.

How many years does Fernandez have left at HWT? There could be some good matches in the future at Hwt between us 2 once G comes back. It's amazing that the kid hasn't wrestled all year and is ranked number 6 in the nation.

I really think that this could be a national championship year for us.

Fernandez is a senior, so this is his last go around.

Z is getting a lot of hype that I'm not 100% sure he deserves. He's an elite wrestler, world class level in freestyle. But he had difficulty adapting to collegiate wrestling. He came on at the end last year and became an All-American, but take it from someone who saw a lot of his matches, it wasn't until the last few weeks of the season that he showed a lot of promise.

And now he's moving up in weight, hasn't wrestled since November I believe, coming off an injury, and is ranked? I just don't get it.

I will say in his defense, he probably IS capable of reaching that ranking. He absolutely schooled the Missouri HWT Dom Bradley, who is currently ranked #5.

I just don't agree with them that you should rank someone who hasn't competed all year.

As far as OSU winning it all...that's not out of the realm of possibilities. But OSU would have to wrestle the best tournament they possibly could. You'd have to give Cornell the upper hand on paper right now.

But that's the fun of the NCAA tournament, I guess. On paper doesn't mean a thing come Thursday at 9:00 am.

wondering what will happen when Nebraska leaves the conference, in terms of the number of qualifiers the Big 12 gets. The big Ten has become like a mini-NCAA with Penn State and Now Nebraska added in.

Good luck to the Sooners this Saturday in Ames. hope we pull a couple of upsets and win all we're suppose to win. I have no doubt OSU will win it, though.

I'd like to see us place in the top 6 this year in the NCAAs, with at least one sooner in the finals. We could have a half dozen AAs if we wrestle well.

I'd rather see Cornell win the NCAA tourney than either OSU or Iowa.

Most of all, anybody but Iowa.

1) when NU leaves, we won't have enough teams to qualify as a qualifying tournament without petitioning for an exemption from the NCAA (hearing that's a doubtful option). Would either have to add other teams (look to some other non-qualifying conferences), or something else (not sure what that would be yet).

2) We have a decent shot at getting as high as sixth (though I'd be surprised if we got much higher). Caldwell and Bailey seem to be our best shot at finalists, but those are really outside shots at best.

3) Cornell has the edge going in, but never count out OSU or Iowa. Only those two and Minnesota have ever won the NCAA championships since 1988.

wondering what will happen when Nebraska leaves the conference, in terms of the number of qualifiers the Big 12 gets. The big Ten has become like a mini-NCAA with Penn State and Now Nebraska added in.

From an OSU site:

I recently wrote a story for AWN about this. The coaches' preference, in order, is to:
1) remain a 4-team conference and have a qualifying tournament. That was a pretty strong preference.
2) add some associate conference members -- for wrestling only. Have enough for a qualifying tournament that way.
3) go to a regional for qualifying. they really don't want that.

I have a hard time believing the NCAA will allow a 4-team qualifying tournament. But who knows?

What do you guys prefer? I would love to see any and all schools like UNI, Wyoming, Air Force, Northern Colorado, Boise, Utah Valley State, South Dakota State, etc., added to Big 12 for a qualifying conference tournament. Those schools could now recruit to the Big 12. Of course, some of those schools leaving a conference would hurt that conference.

Fernandez with the semifinal fall!

Nelson biggest disappointment of the semis. also lester and schmidtke.

We have 5 in the finals. I believe 4 in the consolation.

SanJoaquinSooner

Nelson must not be in shape. He should have dominated but did just the minimum to win.

MiccoMacey

He's such a big kid...I wonder if cutting weight is his problem.

We're looking pretty good right now, from what I can tell.

MiccoMacey
3/5/2011, 03:07 PM
Patterson, Keller, bailey, Caldwell and Fernandez in the finals.

Lester, Nelson, and james going for third for sure. Possibly Schmidke, but I haven't seen an update on his match yet.

Only Keldrick Hall is out.

Going into the finals, OSU is leading us by 1.5 points. We have five in the finals and they have six. A very respectable showing so far.

MiccoMacey
3/5/2011, 04:32 PM
Probably a show down for second with Missouri...they're behind us by 7.5 points and have four in the finals.

Really very little to almost zero chance OU can catch OSU. Two of our finalists are up against two of the best wrestlers in the country at any weight (Oliver and Burroughs).

The HWT match between Missouri's #1 seed Dom Bradley and OU's #2 seed Nathan Fernandez could be for second place.

MiccoMacey
3/5/2011, 04:35 PM
We wrestle Missouri in the finals twice...we're favored in one and they're favored in the other.

The other two kids from Missouri are the underdogs in their other matches.

SanJoaquinSooner
3/5/2011, 05:21 PM
we should take second if Patterson and Bailey win.

MiccoMacey
3/5/2011, 07:25 PM
Werd. Especially since Bailey will be wrestling a Mizzou kid.

Major suckage at the finals. Caldwell almost did it.

MiccoMacey
3/5/2011, 10:57 PM
Yeah...0-5. And no takedowns period. Both conference records.

That put Missouri ahead of us for second place by 1/2 point.

I can't believe Jerod lost to a kid who, I believe, was 9-9 on the year.

diegosooner
3/7/2011, 11:07 AM
Well, I hope they're looking to peak in two weeks at the NCAA tournament.

The only problem is that falling flat in the conference finals may hurt in the seedings.

I'm concerned about Matt Lester and Chase Nelson. It didn't appear they were awarded qualifying slots to the NCAA. I don't know how "at-large' slots work.

Chase Nelson underperformed at the conference tournament, but I have hopes of him making AA at the nationals based on him winning a tough midlands tournament this year. Maybe he's made for big tournaments.

Yeah, he whipped both Jerod and OSU's top seeded Morrison. He's got my attention.

Reminds me of when Sam Hazel... was a senior and the favorite to win the championship. The young kid from Nebraska came out of nowhere to beat him in the finals.

Yeah, he didn't wrestle his match. I guess it's typical to turn too cautious in the finals for so many wrestlers.

Hope he has a decent greco roman career.

Paul Donohoe was a 6th seed and beat Sam Hazewinkel in the Finals in OT.

He placed third the following year, then was kicked out of Nebraska for posing for a gay website (along with another nationally-ranked Nebraska wrestler, Kenny Jordan).

I'm concerned about Matt Lester and Chase Nelson. It didn't appear they were awarded qualifying slots to the NCAA. I don't know how "at-large' slots work.

Both got in.

Basically, they have a Gold/Silver/Bronze criteria now. You either qualify outright throughout the season (based on total wins, winning percentages, RPI, etc...), win the conference championship, or get selected by the NCAA due to RPI. The conferences no longer give out their own wild card slots.

I got this from another website:

From NCAA Handbook:

Secondary Criteria. On March 7, 2011, wrestlers in each weight class will receive an updated Win % and RPI that includes all competition through the qualifying events. Wrestlers that meet or exceed any one of the following criteria will be labeled “Bronze Standard”:

* .700 Win %

* Top 33 RPI

* Top 33 CR (2/22/10 measure)

* .700 winning percentage against all competition

* One win against a wrestler receiving automatic qualification

* Qualifying event placement one below automatic qualification

Only Bronze Standard wrestlers will be eligible for selection as at-large qualifiers. A wrestler must have participated in their respective conference or regional qualifying tournament in order to be considered for at large . The NCAA Wrestling Committee will use the following criteria to evaluate the Bronze Standard wrestlers:

* Head-to-head competition

* Qualifying event placement

* Quality wins

* Results against common opponents

* Win %

* RPI

* CR

* Number of matches contested at that weight class

Clear as mud. ;)

Yep. Not sure they can repeat last year's "surprise attack". OU came out of the woodwork and was very aggressive the whole tournament. They were the talk of the NCAAs last year.

Not sure we can catch lightning in a bottle two years in a row. At least not after watching the Big Twelves where we were the least aggressive OU team I've seen in awhile.

I hope Sammie proves me wrong, and that the B12's were a fluke.
