Just saw a preview for Marcus Dupree's film labeled the best that never was. What's the story with him? In the highlights he looked amazing. And they said he was there only his freshman year. That's crazy

Here's the short and nasty:

on the field: he was a 25 year old NFL RB playing against Pop Warner opposition.
off the field: he was a Pop Warner guy out at a strip joint with 25 year old NFL guys.

Marcus Dupree is "The Count of Monte Cristo" in reverse...sort of.

The director of this episode was on KREF yesterday talking about it and I can't wait to see it.
It is a documentary of Marcus instead of the usual 30 minute sound bite. There are interviews with Barry and high school footage that only Switzer and Scott Hill have probably seen before.
It will air Tuesday night and is titled "The Greatst Player Who Never Was".

Heard it is very well done, very sad...also, Dupree was a truly great guy, really likeable but had no guidance and a guy who took advantage of him. Apparently the Farley guy who took advantage of him is still a prick about it in the documentary

I remember watching him. The dude was AMAZING on the field.

The joke after he left was the he called Barry Switzer and said, "Coach, I made a big mistake."

Barry answered, "Yes, I think you did."

Marcus said, "Well, I'd like to make it right though. I'd like to come back to college."

Barry answered, "I agree. I think you should."

Marcus said, "Well, coach, where should I go?"

Barry answered, "Anywhere but OU."

J/K. He was an amazing talent, but something wasn't there. He lacked something and it led him to leave everyone high and dry when he left. He later showed up in the USFL, it was still obvious that he was an amazing talent, and had the potential for greatness, but once again, he lacked something and never fulfilled his potential.

FWIW, my favorite memory of him was when he ran over a Nebraska DB on his way to a TD. This wasn't MU, mind you, this was might Nebraska, and he absolutely RAN OVER that guy, then outran everyone else to the endzone.
