Funnily enough, this celebration has it's origins at least partly at OU.

When I was a grad student in the early oughts (2000 or 2001...I forget which year this started), several students in my department had the idea to have a beard contest, which was named after one individual in the department who had a mightily impressive beard. The next year, this contest went campus wide...still carrying this individuals name with "Memorial Beard Contest" after it...even though he was not dead...or even close to it.

Later, after I had left campus, this had morphed into no-shave-november. Although I have heard tell of other universities that still hold Nth annual "_______ _____ Memorial Beard Contests", with our old friends name in there...and likely with no idea whatsoever as to who he is, and that he is not at all dead.


This may be completely or partially true, but thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
