This season's blog is dedicated in memory of Rosalind Ross, who was fatally shot this past September. Ross was a key member of our team's first Final Four appearance in 2002, when the team took down Duke and nearly defeated undefeated UConn in the championship game. Ross was a tremendous athlete and first-round WNBA draft pick whose three-point shooting caused fans to hold up not one, but two "3" signs in tribute to her jersey, #33. Our thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family during this difficult time and we thank you for sharing Ross with Sooner Nation, who provided us with such wondering memories.

You get a little bit of tear in your eye just writing that out... but a new season with many new faces following the graduations of Ny Stevenson, Abi Olajuwon and Amanda Thompson is upon us. It's November! First, the FAQ:

Q: What the heck is this?

A: Due to previous friendly ribbing for interjecting womens basketball discussion into this primarily mens basketball forum, I started a blog thread last season to keep my chatter about the womens team to a single thread. Lo and behold, that team surprised us all and went to the Final Four, so perhaps it's lucky?

Q: What exactly, other than lack of blog, would keep the team from going back to the Final Four again?

A: Much like last year, graduations. We lost the Paris twins before last season and this offseason, we lost Abi, Amanda and Nyeshia, three strong starters. Plus, we have a LOT of newcomers... and Whitney Hand is injured till January again.

Q: Speaking of the seniors, how are they?

A: Alas, all of our WNBA players were either cut during preseason or during the season, so we have no Sooner representation currently in the WNBA. However, many of them compete overseas during the WNBA's offseason, so don't give up on them yet! It is a testament to the Sherri's coaching that we have such success as a team with non-WNBA players on our rosters.

Q: If not the Final Four, where is this team headed?

A: Nowhere but up. After the pollsters mistakenly ranked us 20th last preseason (ha ha!), we are now a top-ten preseason ranked team for the third time in four seasons. Check out the preseason poll here. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20101029_92_0_TeOlhm928346)

Q: I'm new to womens basketball. Who should I hate?

A: Without a question, hate Baylor. They are the unquestioned front runner for the Big 12 this year and are being touted as the team to dethrone UConn. They are also, if I'm not mistaken, the only Big 12 team to have a national championship. Also, we beat them twice out of our three meetings last year, so this is not just blind jealousy hate we're talking. We have a very good chance of taking them out, but it will be difficult. More on them as the season develops.

Q: So...um... about that offseason poll...

A: It's cool. You can view all of the pics and the voting and such at the following links here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141963&highlight=hottest+basketball) (round one), here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142286&highlight=hottest+basketball) (play-in round), here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142416&highlight=hottest+basketball) (round two), here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142594&highlight=hottest+basketball) (final four) and here (http://www.rdhouse.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142727) (finale). Don't complain about the results - you all were the ones who voted. :)

Welcome back everyone. Hope we have another awesome season to talk about here :)

In case you all didn't hear, D-Rob is a preseason AA pick. Kudos to her, she definitely deserves it :)

As per tradition, our season starts off with an exhibition against Coale's alma mater Oklahoma Christian 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday). After the team's male counterparts on the other side of LNC squeaked by against their first opponent, I hope the ladies don't take anything for granted.

But really, I expect nothing but good things to come out of this game. The freshmen are going to get valuable experience, and a chance to get the crappy fouls and turnovers out of the way in the exhibition, rather than against Baylor. I would not be surprised if everyone got at least a few minutes on the court.

The dog days of pre-season are over, the adrenaline kick of early practices has passed, and we're just a day away from our one and only chance to make a first impression. Ready or not, on Thursday we go.

With the popularity of last year's shoddily-drawn Microsoft Paint cartoons, I'll try to do a few more for big games this year:

http://i53.tinypic.com/nziucw.jpg

We're a long way from being good right now, but I have to admit that this bunch has me. I like them. I like their hunger. I like their wide eyes. I like their diligence in little things. And I enjoy teaching them because they want to learn.

If there is anything to be pessimistic about this team, it's the fact that we have five freshmen, and as Danielle Robinson knows, being young and in the college game for the first time means lots of silly fouls and turnovers. The college game still means lots of silly fouls and turnovers even for upperclassmen, so D-Rob will have to set a good example for our younger players on how to handle the ball. However, since she was now named a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist, I think she's at that stage where turnovers and fouls will get minimal... hopefully. If not, prepare for tons of death stares from the lady in charge on the bench in stilettos.

The quotes from Coale that I'm stealing are from a blog they posted on SS.com yesterday. You can read it in its entirety here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/110310aab.html)

There really is a lot of reasons to be excited about this upcoming season, even if it follows one of the best surprise seasons ever.

Anyway - 7 p.m. tonight! Something called the "OU Drum Line Team" makes its debut at halftime. So, make lots of noise or you'll be covered up by drum noise, I guess :D Preview of the game here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/110310aag.html)

Usually when we have rebuilding seasons it's with a new PG. We have a lot of young people, but D-Rob is still the keystone. She'll keep us afloat in the games where the young girls are flailing around, and when the youth clicks we'll be really good.

Good luck this season, girls!

So, since this is exhibition and all, I thought I'd start off this game overview by introducing you all to some new players on the team.

http://i51.tinypic.com/x2utlt.png
Everyone, this is Alexann Yancey. She is a 5-10 froshie guard from Plano. You all will probably demand that she be included in some offseason poll, but save your demands till I get to all of the freshmen, mkay?

Yancey was among the 12 Sooners (Both Whitney and ROFL were out with injuries and didn't play) that recorded minutes in our 91-42 exhibition win over Sherri's alma mater Oklahoma Christian University. We apparently generated 40 points off of their turnovers... but this is exhibition, we are a top-10 team and I have very high expectations :)

So, as was the case last year, honors and dishonors - and unless you have a really big game, being in the dishonor list means NO player of the game honors for the game.

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob
Danielle had 19 points in only 25 minutes. She usually played 38, 39, 40 minutes per game, so you can only expect this number to go up... minutes-wise and points-wise.

Rebound machine: Jelena Cerina
Who? Why, yet another newcomer that I will introduce you to this exhibition season, but of course! She also shot a perfect 4 for 4 from the field. She is a junior transfer originally from Serbia... a 6-foot, 5-inch transfer. Baylor, eat yer heart out.

Free throws should be free award: Lauren Willis
Yes, the Christmas scholly recipient has made us all proud, shooting a perfect 4 for 4 from the line last night.

and now, the dishonorable mentions:

Turnover queen: D-Rob
Danielle, remember what I said yesterday about setting a good example for all of our freshmen? SEVEN turnovers?! Second-place was tied with 3... Joanna! You're not a freshman, either!

CP3 tribute award (for missing free throws): Jaz Hart (0 for 2)
ANOTHER non-freshmen with a dishonorable, eh? I apologize whole-heartedly to the froshies I was poking fun at yesterday in the shoddily-drawn toon. But, considering the whole team shot 15 for 23, maybe I'm being too hard on Jasmine?

Field goals are the goal: Jasmine Hartman
When you shoot 0 for 3 from the field and shoot 0 for 2 from the line, your total point total for the night is... zero. In 21 minutes, poor Hartman logged zero points due to missed shots both at the line and the field. No, they were not 3-point attempts. She just... missed shots. She was the only player that played to score zero points. C'mon Jaz. I know you can do better!

Player of the game: Lauren Willis
Looking at the entire stat line, she stands out in multiple categories. As already noted, she was the only Sooner that was perfect from the line. She was also 2 for 3 from three-point range (Morgan Hook, another froshie that I'll introduce later, shot 2 for 4. Nobody else on the team hit two). Tied for leading the team in assists (3) and was second on the team in steals (also 3, D-Rob had 6) oh and get this - ZERO turnovers. Perfect! Congrats, Lauren! You're showing everyone why you earned your Christmas scholarship! :)

http://i51.tinypic.com/11uvpsl.png

And now, for a quote:

We want to be able generate our offense with our defense and we did a good job of that... We got a little greedy and either gave them an angle to the rim or fouled. But I liked their aggression. I like the way, particularly, Danielle (Robinson) was getting after the ball. I like the way my big girl Joanna (McFarland) goes diving after the loose ball and makes a play. Lauren Willis comes in and flies around, dives on the floor and gets a loose ball. So I thought there were some really good things in that regard in the effort category.

Well, here is a link to it (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/news/story?id=5757059), complete with a Baylor Behemoth feature story on how she likes to eat pig and play like a man or whatever. If you feel no need to look at that story after the initial image, that's OK - you're not missing much. Just google her name and you'll see all you'll need to know about Baylor's tall chick.

Our exhibition season continues at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) and Amanda Thompson has a reminder for the team in this week's shoddily-drawn Microsoft Paint toon:
http://i55.tinypic.com/25p4i83.jpg
I didn't come up with "The Waitress" nickname, but it's on her facebook, myspace and twitter I've heard, so it's what she prefers to be called, heh. Still, the team should look back to AT's constant clutch performances at the line and shooting from the field to know that those little shots worth a paltry one point each make the difference down the stretch, especially against the likes of some of our Big 12 foes.

You can view a complete schedule here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/sched/okla-w-baskbl-sched.html) Alas, no articles since last week's game, and even some of the local media just lifted the AP wire story, so nothing to share on that front.

For the fans of all of my "Texas loses" pictures over on the fark board (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3034042#post3034042), a good ESPN.com read on why Texas womens basketball sucks:

Link (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/preview2010/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id=5783977)

If you don't have time to read, in a nutshell, Texas tried to buy a winning coach with a lot of money and it didn't work out. Exiting the first round of the NCAA tourney when you're playing at home isn't exactly a good way to end a season.

Not sure if you all realized this, but it's early signing season in college basketball. As such, Sherri early-signed four.

You can see ESPN's recruiting profiles for each here:

Sharane Campbell (http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/71537/sharane-campbell)

Katherine Zander (http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/72500/katherine-zander)

I could not find a profile for Kaylon, but there were several wire stories about a player of the same name verbaling to UW-Milwaukee's men's team last April... um... ok...

Know-your-new-Sooner time!

This is Morgan Hook:
http://i51.tinypic.com/5my5bs.jpg
She is a 5-10 guard from Arkansas (we recruit a lot of Arky girls, don't we?).

I feel a lot more comfortable (in games) than I do in practices. I don’t know why, but practices, I feel like my mind is going a hundred miles an hour. But during the games I feel really calm. I know Danielle, she always has to tell me to calm down, you’ve got the shot. So I look to her to keep my head during the game.
Glad to have her aboard. Should provide some help in shooting these upcoming seasons. And now, onto the game!

85-23

Of course, Cameron is a D-2 opponent who apparently turned over the ball 43 times, so that means a lopsided game, and a lot of minutes to share! Cameron's leading scorer had 8 points... so... let's just talk about our girls, shall we?

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (20)
20 points in 22 minutes? Oh man... I know it's Cameron and all, but... wow.

Rebound machine: Joanna McFarland (7)
She must not like the "Four Foul" nickname I gave her last season, because she only had one last night in 14 minutes of play. Honorable mention to both Carlee (yes, back starting from ankle injury) and Lauren Willis, who both had 6 each.

Free throws should be free award: Team (19 for 23)
They must have hated the crappy toon I drew, because the worst at the line was D-Rob at 4 for 6, which is something I can live with. For the most part, when we went to the line, we made shots... and there were no oh-fers. Everyone who shot at least one made at least one.

Giving Tree award: Jasmine Hartman (6)
Better name for assists leader to be determined. Her shot was much improved over last game as well, shooting 2 for 2 at the line and 2 for 3 from the field.

and now, some of the less appealing statistics:

Turnover queen: D-Rob (5)
I should put more of this stat on the team as well, since someone has to be there to catch the passes, but still...

Field goals are the goal: Team (30 for 70)
Yes, we shot 30 for 70 last night... but Cameron shot 9 for 49, so maybe I shouldn't be so harsh? Dishonorable mention to Nicole Griffin, who like Jaz in the first exhibition, missed all shots from the field and the line to end with zero points :(

Whitney's watching you miss her shot: Aaryn Ellenberg (0 for 5)
When the game is really out of hand, it might be fun to lob up some crazy 3-point shots, but when you lob up five of them and miss all five, that's not a good thing. She's a freshman so I'll forgive her.

Player of the game: Jasmine Hartman
I'm sorry for calling out your shot last game :( Led the team in assists (6 to 2 assist-to-turnover ratio), minutes (23), second in steals (3) and shot perfectly from the line. Congrats, Jaz! Keep it up!

Stat of the game: 13. Once again, every non-injured player logged minutes (at least seven each) last night. Carlee ROFL started in place Lyndsey Cloman.

And now, a quote!

Once again I was really proud with our kids' effort. They played extremely hard for all 40 minutes. For everybody who went in, for whatever the situation was when they went in the game, I really liked our effort. I love how this team gets after loose balls. It’s really hard to get six new players to buy into that this early in the season and I think the credit for the fact that they have belongs to the seniors and Whitney (Hand), as a captain, as well, in demanding them and expecting it from them on a daily basis. I love that. Those are intangible things that really are going to help us as we go into the stretch of early pre-conference play.

Boomer!

We start our regular season on the road to Milwaukee (yay, state of Wisconsin!) tomorrow. I'll be down in Norman with NormanPride for the Tech football beatdown, but I'll be back Sunday to recap.

To preview the game at SS.com, click here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/111210aaa.html)

I really can't say anything about womens basketball at UW-Milwaukee, but as a college-bound high school student presented with tons of crap on the UW system back in my old home state, I can say without a doubt that despite the fact that UW-Madison (the place where the Badgers play) is the Big Ten school with all of the fans and stuff, UW-Milwaukee was constantly the highest-priced state school in the state. Sure, neighboring Marquette is private and pricey, but combine it with UW-Milwaukee and you've got a very expensive higher education town.

Milwaukee, while home to the state's lone MLB and NBA teams, hardly reflects the rest of the rural state's culture and is pretty much an extension of Chicago and is the state's most-populous city with craploads of traffic compared to everywhere else.

So - yay Wisconsin, boo Milwaukee, but don't boo them entirely, because they gave us our tallest player in OU womens bball history (6'6" froshie Nicole Griffin) and the late great Rosalind Ross, who will be honored by both teams before the game.

I am still exhausted from driving late last night and the last football home game of the season. All of you empty seaters gave me extra leg room, but I'm short and you weren't there to block the cold air so I kind of don't like you absentee fans right now

:D But, I'll save that for the football forum. Isn't this where I intro another new Sooner face?

Everyone, meet Aaryn Ellenberg:
http://i55.tinypic.com/2wdv8fd.jpg
She is proof that our Las Vegas recruiting extends beyond the football field and also that a freshman, if awesome enough, can just step in and start on a top-10 Sooner team. The 5'7" guard is d@mn good and you are going to be seeing a lot more of her this season.

76-59

We only led by 3 at the half in front of 700 fans, so you know that playing on the road is a little bit of a difference. I can also say without a doubt that forcing turnovers was the difference maker tonight, because when a team out-shoots you at the free throw line and has higher percentages at in field goals and three-pointers, there's gonna be issues. However, it's everyone's issue, because 12 players logged at least a minute.

Scoring Sooner: Danielle Robinson (20)
Someday, I might rename this award in her honor. Was 8 for 14 in 37 minutes.

Rebound machine: Hart and McFarland (5 each)
Really? McFarland has to share this honor? wtf, Joanna. This is your area of expertise. There were also two players with four (Cerina and Cloman)

Free throws should be free: D-Rob (4 for 4); Morgan Hook (2 for 2)
Sherri probably took off her stilettos and shaked the pointy end at the players till they shot better from the line. While more are hitting their shots, I wish we had more opportunities at the line.

Unselfish Sooner: D-Rob (11)
11 assists is really, really good. But, I wish more players had them - second in this category was two (Hart) and four logged a single assist. SINGLE ASSIST?!

Ball thief: D-Rob (8)
So, we can safely assume that D-Rob destroyed Milwaukee at this point. Hail, Danielle. Your game is as awesome as your red hair.

And now, the dishonors:

Foul happy: Cloman (4)
For the record, Joanna only had one foul. We also had four players with three (Carlee, Aaryn, D-Rob, Cerina). Now that exhibition is over, this dishonorable award makes its return

Whitney's watching you miss her shot: Team (8 for 22)
I know 3-pointers are low-percentage shots, but still, not a good stat. Individually, Aaryn (3 for 8) Morgan (3 for 7) and Lauren (2 for 5) probably all made Whitney cringe a little more than our Texas A&M football game

Turnover queen: D-Rob (5)
The only downside to an otherwise awesome game. So...

Player of the game: Danielle Robinson
Turnover queen status aside, I have decided that so long as her turnovers are trumped by her assists, it can be forgiven during winning games. She really has been the top player every single game this season for us and she deserves recognition.
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_flash_video_photo/5952764.jpeg
EMPTY MILWAUKEE STADIUM, RECOGNIZE HER!!!!!

And now, a quote:

"That's what she does... That's why she is a candidate for the Wade Trophy and on everyone's preseason All-American list.

"She was a little more aggressive looking for her shot, but really it was leadership, the way she carried herself... It was the intensity in her face."

En route to work and at the gym, all the chatter is about a certain #1 vs. #2 matchup. Yup, UConn's hosting Baylor at 5 p.m. tonite on ESPN2. In case you haven't heard, there's this chick from Baylor who can dunk

Link to Baylor site (http://www.baylorbears.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/111510aac.html)

While I was working out, ESPN was showing lowlights from last year's Final Four game where Britney was getting pwn3d repeatedly by UConn - either guarding too far away from the basket, or getting dribbled around, or missing shots because she couldn't get close enough to the basket.

Sports Animal was interviewing Sherri about it this morning. She said that she "didn't have a dog in the fight," but said that men's basketball really took off around the time UCLA had it's big John Wooden streak going, which created parity and more competition in the game, not to mention a lot of fan interest. So, she said a 1-2 matchup like this is good for the game.

Then, Sherri was asked about Joe C. possibly moving onto a different program and... asked if she would consider taking over for Joe when he's done at OU.

Sherri laughed, because at first she thought she was going to be asked if she would work for UConn's coach Geno and she was all like NO, I'm NOT going to work for Geno! And then she said that she was loving coaching and that if she was AD, she'd never be able to have the time to get on the court and play ball like she does now :)

Also, as noted in my first entry, the late Roz Ross is still being honored by the team. Here's the ball UW-Milwaukee and OU presented to her parents when they visited her hometown:

Anyway, we host Western Illinois 7 p.m. tomorrow (Friday). Our schedule doesn't get as busy as the men's till about a week from now when we go to some early-season tourney. Alas, no TV time yet.

Since there really isn't any wire stories out there on the team, I'll share with you what I found yesterday when i was looking through the past Blake Griffin/tourney threads:

Meet the tallest Sooner:
http://i54.tinypic.com/2hqfi15.jpg
Six-foot, six-inch Nicole Griffin is a freshman outta Milwaukee and like our men's froshie outta Putnam City, Nicole was also her state's Gatorade Player of the Year. Thus far, Joanna gets a lot of our center position minutes, but look for Nicole to step in later this season more, especially during conference play (read: Baylor) when fouls will become an issue for our primary blockers.

84-43

The Leathernecks, eh? The first time I saw ESPN flash the score on the bottom ticker, it was already 30-6. This game was never close, largely due to our continued turnover forcing (they had 23) and held them to 14 for 51 shooting (including 0 for 11 from three-point range). For this game's honorees, read on:

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (20)
Amazingly, we only had three in double-figures last night, including Clomand and Aaryn (13 each, respectively)

Rebound machine: Cloman (6)
This stat continues to amaze me, how nobody really sticks out (Nicole and Carlee both had 5 each) but everyone seems to contribute a little. As Sherri put it:

“Rebounding, for one. It wasn’t until about three or four minutes left in the game that we moved ahead in the rebounding margin and still we ended up only out-rebounding them by four. We’ve got to get more second chance points on offense. We go through spells on offense where we don’t make baskets we have to get more than one attempt.”

Free throws should be free: Team (10 for 11)
Morgan Hook was 0 for 1, but I'm sure she would have hit one if she had more opportunities. This is awesome - keep it up, ladies.

Whitney's watching you MAKE her shot: Aaryn (3 for 6)
Not as awesome as some of the men a few days ago, but still respectable 50 percent shooting behind the arch.

This is usually the part where I give dishonors, but seeing how we don't get 40-point victories too often, let's skip right ahead to:

http://i51.tinypic.com/16ib42v.jpg
Player of the game: Aaryn Ellenberg
Aaryn deserves recognition for being able to jump into our starting lineup as a freshman. In addition to 50 percent three-pointing shooting, Aaryn had a 3-2 assist/turnover ratio, 13 points and even logged a few rebounds. Keep it up, girl!

And now, Sherri Coale:

“I think this team has a very high ceiling because I think they have a very high basketball IQ at an early stage. A lot of the things we do in practice are January-February type of things and we haven’t quite translated that to games yet, but that’s part of the process. The fact that they can see those things and make those things happen in a practice gym in November gives me great hope for how that can continue to improve.”

PS: In case you've also been noticing Alexann Yancey missing from box scores these past two games, she reportedly did not suit up last night due to violation of team rules, whatever that means specifically, I'm not sure. If I see anything out there in any media reports, I'll be sure to pass it on.

The Sooners return to action 7 p.m. tonight at home against Fresno State.

View a preview of the game at SS.com here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/112110aaa.html)

It really looks like we are sticking with this three-guard starting lineup... well, at least till Whitney Hand returns. Then, it will likely depend on our opponent whether we switch out a guard (like Hartman) for a forward (likely Carlee) for Hand. Of course, nothing would secure a starting spot right about now like a few rebounds, so if either are looking to be irreplaceable, focus on every board. Be Dennis Rodman without the weird hair.

And yes, I am 100 percent convinced that as soon as Whitney's cleared, she will be starting. Check out this video (http://www.twitvid.com/2QIV4) of her returning to practice. Credit to IBleedCrimson&Cream at ouhoops.com for the link.

Sorry about the horsepigs, but I'm sure the team appreciates your attendance :)

Everyone, our final Sooner froshie to intro is here, Jacqueline Jeffcoat:
http://www.pisd.edu/news/images/2010.signing.day.jeffcoats.jpg

Before ESPN announces this as often as they remind you who Carlee's brother is, yes, this guy (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/img/v3/10-03-2010.ns_03_txOU_keys_03.G282T0D11.1.jpg) who committed that penalty against us at RRS is her brother... twin brother, in fact. She and our first know-your-froshie introduction, Alexann, were high school teammates. She was the #4 overall rated center on ESPN (teammate Nicole Griffin was rated #10). 6'2" would make her the shortest center on our roster, but the tallest player on most teams we've played thus far. My guess is they're trying to get her to be more of a forward than a center (listed as F/C currently) to get her in the rotation more... but it's early. Anything can happen.

84-66

Let's cut to the chase - we made as many 3-pointers as we did free-throws (10 each). It's like we have a few more Whitney Hands running around out there. This team will be deadly come January... so long as we can rebound. Oh wait, we finally had someone step up and get double figures in that, too! Well, then there's turnovers... yeah, still a problem :O

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (17)
I challenge Aaryn to steal this award from her! She actually came close (15). She's like D-Rob the sequel, with more 3's! Speaking of...

Whitney's watching you MAKE her shot: Aaryn, Lauren (both 3 for 3)
Extra special kudos also to freshman Morgan Hook who also made 3 of these difficult shots (she went 3 for 6). Even Carlee sank one. Wow. Good job girls.

Rebound machine: Joanna (13)
Well, it's about time, Four-Foul McFarland! (she actually hasn't had foul fouls all season... but had three yesterday) Honorable mention to Carlee, who had seven. This is still an area that needs improvement, but this is definitely a start in the right direction.

Free throws should be free: Kodi (2-2), Joanna (5-6)
D-Rob also shot 1 for 1... I really, REALLY wish we'd draw more FT's than the other team for once

Unselfish Sooner: D-Rob (8)
Second-place on the team was 2... PASS THE BALL, girls!

And now, a few dishonorees:

Foul happy: Carlee, Morgan (4 each)
This might the root of our FT discrepancy problem. Joanna and Lyndsey get dishonorable mention, recording 3 each. Our girls recorded 25 fouls compared to Fresno's 18.

Turnover prone: Team (19)
This dishonor goes away when we force the other team into more turnovers than we commit ourselves. On the positive side, as least we also had 19 assists recorded to go with the 19 turnovers. Leaders in this turnover effort were our freshmen stars, Aaryn and Morgan (4 each)

Free throws SHOULD be free: Team (10 for 16)
Not so much that we missed six (three were 0 for 1), but that the other teams continue to get to the line more than we do.

http://i52.tinypic.com/28menie.jpg
Player of the game: Danielle Robinson
Let's face it - she's MVP of every game thus far, I just find excuses to recognize some of her teammates occasionally. Some games, it's just unavoidable, you have to recognize and 8-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (seriously), being the team's leading scorer (this game and every game thus far) and being the perfect role model for our younger players. Keep it up, D!

"When (Robinson) starts a game aggressively as she did tonight, that sort of shocks the defense. I felt like she sort of put Fresno on their heels for a bit, and then that opened up 3-point shooters and we made those... So they were in a quandary of `What do we try to take away?'

The lack of foul shots is a disturbing trend to me... It speaks to a team that relies a lot on the jump shot rather than the layup. Eventually the shots will dry up and we'll have to create offense in other ways. I'd like to see the girls draw a few more and learn how to gut out a win the hard way.

However, nearly-beating-UConn-on-the-road was not enough style points for Baylor either, who dropped to 3. Let's just run down the Big 12 ranked teams, shall we?

3. Baylor
8. Texas A&M
10. Oklahoma

20. Nebraska

Our problem is we are in the part of our schedule where we are playing a bunch of weak teams. Kentucky passed us because they beat ranked Notre Dame. We just need to keep winning and then we will have our shot when we play at tOSU on 12/5. Win that one and we will jump a few spots.

The Big 12 remains one of the strongest (if not THE strongest) conferences in womens basketball. I'll try to recap our own tourney wins later today. Spoiler: The scoring queen finally got dethroned in our 116-66 win Friday... and she was dethroned by a freshman.

badger
11/30/2010, 10:25 AM
"They are very good in spurts, Oklahoma. Once they put it all together, they're going to be great."

This is going to be a good season. I know the last two were good and the three before that with CP3 rebounding and scoring constantly were good too, but this team just seems very solid, very early in the season.

They deserve a longer write-thru for a three-game tourney win, but since they already play again tomorrow, let's cut right to our leaders:

(note: unless i screwed up, stats are listed Friday's game, then Saturday's game, then Sunday's game)

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (16, 18, 24)
Honorable mention goes to the first one on the team to score more than Danielle in a game so far this season - Aaryn Ellenberg was the team's leading scorer the opening night with 26 (taking second to D in the other two games). To be fair, Danielle only played 16 minutes in the 50-point blowout (116-66), but then again, Aaryn only played about half the game too.

Rebound machine: Joanna (15, 7, 11)
I really think McFarland is getting more consistent here, and we definitely need someone, if not Joanna, to step up our rebounding. It is not good to be nearly-even with these mid-major teams.

Unselfish Sooner: Hartman (4, 4, 4)
It seems like each of our starters are starting to focus on one area they can lead the team in (thought I think Danielle is still among the Big 12's leaders in assists). This will come in handy down the road against tougher opponents down the road, definitely.

Free throws should be free: Aaryn (3 for 4, 4 for 4, 7 for 7)
Yup, only missed one free throw the entire tourney, according to SS.com's box scores. Danielle did this feat too, but not shooting any in the first game means this honor goes to Aaryn.

Ball thief: D-Rob (3, 3, 3)
OU opponents should pray that they get guarded by someone else.

Dishonors... :(

Whitney's watching you miss her shot: Team (6 for 22, 5 for 20, 7 for 16)
Shot selection... 3's are so much fun to make that it seems that people are selecting a three-point shot often now... leading to some individual stat lines reading 1 for 7 (Morgan Hook on Friday), 0 for 3 (Lauren Willis on Friday) or 1 for 5 (Danielle on Sunday... wait, D-Rob actually shot some 3's???). We are still a very good shooting team overall, but the game we nearly blew, 84-75 over Gardner-Webb on Saturday, our opponent actually shot better from the floor overall than us... mostly because we missed 15 three-point shots. Ugh.

Turnover prone: Team (18, 15, 18)
The first game we at least had more assists. The other games, turnovers were so bad that not only did the other team force more or the same amount (Gardner had 15 on Saturday, Prairie had 17 on Sunday), but yeah, not enough assists to make up for it.

http://i56.tinypic.com/nohmjm.jpg
I am really looking forward to seeing who the next player is to step up. Will it be someone off the bench. Will it just be Whitney when she returns? Will Sherri try to impersonate a teenager and sneak onto the court? Haha no... but my early prediction is Nicole Griffin is about to see a lot more minutes. Till then, our player of the tourney is...

http://i55.tinypic.com/2nuoqcj.jpg
Joanna McFarland, who is finally finding her rebounding again. Had me worried those first few games. While I once called her "Four Foul McFarland" last season, she has kept that stat under control thus far (getting 2, 2, and 3 fouls during the tourney) while also contributing respectable points in the midst of a lot of scorers. Keep up the good work Joanna. Now... how bout some blocks? :)

And now, Sherri Coale:

"All wins are good wins. We need to practice though. We need a day of practice and we’ll get that on Tuesday and I am looking forward to that. I thought Prairie View played really hard. They are very athletic and well coached. (Prairie View head coach Toyelle Wilson) is infusing them with the belief they can win and they competed every single possession tonight. It was a good test for our guys and I appreciate the caliber of the competition throughout the whole weekend in terms of guys not going away. Nobody buried their head and died when we got a lead. That’s good for our basketball team to compete through that.”

Recaps/stats can be viewed on SS.com here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/sched/okla-w-baskbl-sched.html) As noted, the Sooners are back in action 7 p.m. tomorrow hosting Sam Houston State. Then, our first televised matchup and big test of the year at Ohio State on Dec. 5.

94-45

Oh, man, the scoring queen has been dethroned once again, and once again, it was by a freshman. More on that below.

Due to the lopsided nature of this (and thus far, almost every) game, Sherri did not play her starters, so the Dec. 5 matchup at Ohio State might be the first time some of these girls log significant minutes this season. Slightly worried about that, but I'm sure Sherri knows what she's doing... and not running up the score to 150 and playing bench players is not a bad thing.

Scoring Sooner: Morgan Hook (25)
In only 22 minutes, less than most of the starters played, Morgan shot 9 for 12 from the field.

Rebound machine: Joanna (10)
She continues to be the only double-digit rebounder.

Unselfish Sooner: Hart, D-Rob (5 each)
They both had 5 to 2 assist-to-turnover ratios. Overall, the team was 21 to 14, so pretty good!

Whitney's watching you make her shot: Morgan (7 for 9)
In case you're wondering how she got 25 points last night...

Ball thief: D-Rob (5)
If you have to play Oklahoma, hold the ball with two hands near Danielle. Don't pass it, she'll intercept it. Don't dribble, she'll swat it away. Either shoot it immediately, or roll into the fetal position till the refs save you. Only these two options will save you from getting the ball stolen.

Free throws are free! Yay: Team (19 for 22)
I'm starting to think this will not be a liability this season... but I imagine it will be less easy to shoot these on the road during conference play. We were perfect, 14 for 14, in the first half.

And the dishonors...

Whitney's watching you miss her shot: Aaryn (2 for 9)
Oh boy... if someone's hitting them all, someone's missing them all.

Outblocked: Team (4 versus their 6)
Hard to complain when your team wins by almost half a hundred, but I find it hard to believe that we aren't getting more blocks. There's no foul trouble, and we have a lot of really tall players compared to some of these early opponents. Hmmm...

http://i54.tinypic.com/2qdx5yb.jpg
Player of the Game: Morgan Hook
It would be hard to overlook a player - a freshman player - who came off the bench and contributed so much. 25 points, ZERO turnovers, two assists, two rebounds, only one foul and even a steal (pictured above).

“I’m too caught up (in the game), but that first one, I knew we had to have a spark somehow because we weren’t really performing really well. I just went in and shot it, didn’t think and put it in.”

And now, Sherri Coale:

"I'm really proud of the freshman class. All of them have a strong sense of individual confidence, and it's sort of been magnified because they're together... All five of them are in the dorm and go to eat their meals together, they come to the gym together.

"That individual confidence that each one of them has sort of infused one another and collectively they're playing like they're experienced even though they're not."

One day I'm ready to take on UConn and the world, the next I'm going nuts over what I thought would be a W for us... and reading last year's blog, I was just as erratic then, so my apologies.

... but hey, at least the football team's ready to take on UConn now, even if women's basketball team needs every practice and every game for the next few months to prepare for our annual showdown (and it's on the road this year too).

84-95

In college basketball, 84 points should be good enough to win. Alas, turnover and free throws plagued us. NP was sure that it was ref shenanigans that got them to the line so much, but since Cox didn't broadcast the game (grrrrr) I will give refs the benefit of the doubt just this once and assume that we fouled to end the game.

"When Aaryn Ellenberg got her fourth foul and had to come out it began to unravel a little bit because she had been so much a part of our offensive confidence. We were really looking to her. A true freshman? Are you kidding me?"

Yes, we are now relying on a true freshman, much like the football team relied on a true freshman receiver to finally get us on the scoreboard Saturday night. Sometimes, it just works out that way... and yeah, we'll definitely be a better team in the long run for it. Let's look at our starting cast, shall we?

Surprise of the night: Carlee. Finally, a senior moment for our senior starter. Shot 50 percent from three-point land... 18 points AND 10 rebounds! Finally. Thank you, Carlee.

Five-Foul McFarland: Nothing will take you out of a game like fouls... especially five. Her rebounding (only six) and scoring (only six) suffered greatly for it.

Awesome Aaryn: She is doing a good job of matching her assists for her turnovers (3 to 3) while hitting tons of shots (perfect 3 for 3 from the free throw line, 5 for 9 from three-point line, 34 points total). But, she fouled out too. As Sherri said, are you kidding me?!

Dang it, D-Rob: Missed 10 shots, turned the ball over seven times, and only recorded one steal. But, at least she had 19 points. Also fouled out. %^&*.

Serviceable Hartman: Nothing outstanding to see here, except the fact that she was able to keep her fouls in check (only one!). But, she had six turnovers and only three points. But, she also had seven rebounds. But, she only had one turnover. So confusing, what is her role?

Only three players came off the bench, the most significant minutes went to Morgan Hook and alas, she couldn't repeat her amazing performance of a few nights ago - 0 for 7 from three-point land.

In total, our team committed twice as many (24 to 12) fouls as tOSU. Strike one. Then, we committed way too many turnovers (19 to their 13), strike two. But what stuck out the most in the stat line (because face it, turnovers and lack of free throws is nothing new) was all of the missed shots, both from three-point range and everything else. 44 percent shooting. Oh, boy.

"Are you kidding me?"

As per tradition, no player of the game honor after a loss, but really, kudos to Carlee for finally showing us why you're starting. Keep it up. As for the rest of the team, we had an early loss on the road last year and learned from it. You'll bounce back. Sooners always do :)

Alexann Yancey appears to be off the team. Her name has been removed from the roster on SS.com and according to a site that is a pay site that I think I'm not allowed to quote here because of it's pay nature (read: oui), she was kicked off the team for violation of team rules.

I am sure Sherri will address this after the SFA game tonight. Rumor had it that Lauren was connected to this issue, but Lauren has logged playing time tonight already. Will link any updates I hear around the Internet (that I am allowed to, of course)

It's confirmed - Yancey's gone.

Link (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20101208_92_0_Freshm249580)

Sherri did not appear to address it in postgame last night... but remember when a certain quarterback and offensive lineman got dismissed and they kind of got wiped off SS.com without any fanfare? Yancey's gone from the roster list, like I mentioned last night, but even more strange, you know how I grabbed pics off SS.com to introduce the freshmen earlier this season during recaps? The pic I stole from SS.com from the Oklahoma Christian game of her is off SS.com also.

So, we can safely assume that whatever Yancey did (and again, nobody out there is saying it publicly), it wasn't accidental or a one-time thing.

Good luck, Alexann.

Also, the report mentioned Lauren having a one-game suspension just before the two-year anniversary of her Christmas scholarship (it goes without saying that I'm far more disappointed in a senior former walk-on screwing up than a freshman less than a year removed from parents' watchful eyes). Lauren logged 17 minutes last night, so she must have redeemed herself in practice... probably through wind-sprint-till-you-puke.

This news really disappoints me guys. I really thought this year would be special and now I'm worried on how this will affect team chemistry. If this team stays on track (and yes, I'm worried despite a 27-point victory, we were ice cold to start the game), it will upperclass leadership. D-Rob doesn't want to tank her senior year, nor does Whitney want her comeback-from-injury year to be NIT or out-in-one-round fanfare. Hell, no. We need to compete for a conference title. We need to do well in the tourney... we need to defeat murderer's row!

Contemplating how our freshmen shooting quandary this season could be possible, I came to one conclusion:
http://i53.tinypic.com/fnzaz5.png
Sherri, get this broken Dial-a-Three over to the engineering school and fixed by conference season!

You can read the recap of the game on SS.com here (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/120810aaa.html), a good 27-point margin of victory, yes, but the real story is this on/off shooting. We started the game down 13-5 to SFA because we couldn't make a shot. Argh.... and the, who comes off the bench, but the only honoree I'll recognize today, Morgan Hook

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_bsi_wide/6037883.jpeg
Player of the effing game: Morgan Hook, 26 points, beyonces!!!!

Mic Paint drawings are fun and all, but here is what I'm looking at:

SFA: Morgan (7 for 8), Aaryn (2 for 7)
tOSU: Morgan (0 for 5), Aaryn (5 for 9)
SHS: Morgan (7 for 9), Aaryn (2 for 9)
UTPA: Morgan (1 for 7), Aaryn (4 for 6)

The past three games, we've had a dependable freshman three-point shooter... but it isn't the same girl every night. Isn't that crazy? The nights where they have comparable stats are when they shoot less, but lately, they've been shooting more... and now, to blow your minds further.

Cumulative season stats (through 9 games) three-point shooting:
Jasmine Hartman: 66.7 percent (2 for 3)
Morgan Hook: 47.4 percent (27 for 57)
Aaryn Ellenberg: 45 percent (27 for 60)
Lauren Willis: 43 percent (10 for 23)

I can only imagine what Whitney Hand, the greatest three-point shooter in the history of ever, is thinking right now - when do I get in on this hot shooting action (answer: next month). Her first two seasons, she shot 37 and 38 percent (the second season only five games though).

Will they keep these stats up when conference play starts? I don't know, but for right now, Sherri can simply Froshie Dial-a-Three out of a shooting slump... and we're winning, so whatever works. And now, Sherri Coale:

“She likes the Lloyd Noble Center, I don’t know what else you say about that. I think that truly is a reflection of a really confident kid and an extraordinary competitor. I think a lesser person gets their dobber down for a little bit, feels sorry for themselves and maybe their confidence takes a hit and they are completely ineffective. I felt that way after the game, not that it didn’t matter to her and not that she didn’t want to make shots in Columbus. I just felt like her demeanor after the game, and I had never seen her go 0-for like that, her demeanor is just the same as when she makes seven. I think that’s what’s really special about both of these kids (Hook and Aaryn Ellenberg) is that even keel at which they move. They never get too high or too low, they just kind of methodically play along and they know what they are capable of and they go out and do it.”

We play again today, and it's actually allegedly televised!

Info from SS.com here (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/121010aag.html).

I checked TV listings for Tulsa... a channel called "WIZEBUYZ" that normally shows Shake Weights (which I got as a gag gift - the dogs thought it was a heavier chew bone... I didn't stop them) is allegedly showing our Sooner women. However, no DVR setting allowed, as it has it's normal paid programming crap still on schedule. They BETTER not be lying about this and they BETTER not have shake weights at 2 p.m. today.

There are a few off-court features as well... I'll just screen-shot this one off SS.com:

http://i56.tinypic.com/fm1chh.jpg

More importantly to ages 12 and up, the football team will be honored at halftime for their Big 12 title. Last time I attended one of these at a bball game (don't remember if it was mens or womens) in 2006 it went like this:

Announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, Paul Thompson!
(standing ovating and lots of cheering)
ENA: We love you all and look forward to the Fiesta Bowl...
Someone in the crowd: TEXAS SUCKS!
ENA (right into the microphone for everyone to hear): Yes, Texas sucks.
(standing ovation and lots of cheering)

This was the first game I got to watch in its entirety (the rest have been off of Sherri Coale's weekly show and any highlight reels I could find). Hey guys, glad I'm not having a conversation with myself here :)

The defining moments of the game all involved Morgan Hook, but honorable mention would definitely go to the moment where Sherri Coale threw up her arms, and was like "eff it, the starters sit now" and put in Nicole Griffin, Lyndsey Cloman and... Kodi Morrison. The only starter in at that point (around halfway through second half) was Carlee, if I remember correctly. Sherri said after the game that it was to send a message - that it was d@mn simple to do what she wanted the offense to do, and that even Kodi, the walk-on that joined the team midway through the season last year, could run this offense to Sherri's specifications.

I found an old story where Morgan was referred to as "Captain Hook," possibly because "Captain Morgan" might not be appropriate for an underage future college student-athlete high schooler. But, an off-the-bench hotshot freshman who proves that Sooner Magic is not just limited to football should have a new nickname, with apologies to King Arthur and Anthony Frederick Sandys:
http://i53.tinypic.com/wvu7mq.jpg

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the just-barely win over New Mexico had doom and gloom (and loss) written all over it till Morgan Hook brought the team back from the dead (and defeat) numerous times, including with seconds to go. And she's a freshman. And she's not a starter. Early season candidate for Big 12 Freshman of Year. Pencil it in now, ink if this keeps up.

Unquestioned Player of the Game: Morgan Hook
http://i55.tinypic.com/15n9939.jpg
They've named her Big 12 Freshman of the Week. Read more here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/121310aaa.html)

And that is where the good news stops, I'm afraid.

Sometimes it’s good to be lucky and I think we were, we’re very fortunate.

We should have lost this game. New Mexico blew it at the end, as they were up by one with 5 seconds left and had a few other leads blown earlier. How do you put yourself in a position to lose to an unranked 5-4 team at home?

Turnovers: We had 22 of them.

Bad shooting: We were 50 percent from the three point line... but 37.5 from the field overall, and 67 percent from the free throw line.

Sherri Coale was so frustrated with our usual lineup that Morgan even logged more minutes than all starters except D-Rob. She benched most of the starters about five minutes into the second half in favor of... Nicole Griffin and Kodi Morrison.

“Yes. I thought Kodi Morrison too, coming in the game. (Kodi) just did the simple things, we had a hand off and she used a ball screen, the big jumped out so she reversed it to the wing and we had a basket, just simple, what we do in practice every single day. I think that and Nicole’s presence, the shot block gave us a little bit of energy, just an instant fusion and I think it also made New Mexico think twice about going inside, so I thought her minutes were critical.”

In any event, it's a win, even if it was a barely a win. Read the recap at SS.com here (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/121210aaa.html). Once more, Sherri Coale:

Incredible poise by Morgan Hook, incredible poise by a true freshman, to want the ball and go make a play. There was horrible spacing there on the perimeter when she caught the three. It was very crowded and she kind of bobbled it and took it to them rim and made a tough basket. Then to make a couple free throws that followed, sometimes you’ve got to be lucky. It’s good to be good, but it’s also good to be lucky and I like to be both.”

Coale Nominated for UN Peace Award

Sooners' head coach instills a philosophy of community involvment.
Dec. 15, 2010

ATLANTA -- Celebrate Positive announced today that University of Oklahoma Women's Basketball Coach Sherri Coale has been nominated for the Inaugural 2010 United Nations NGO Positive Peace Awards in the Sports Coach category. This award, viewed as a 21st century peace prize, honors and recognizes individuals, businesses, athletes, sports teams, entertainers and schools around the world for their positive contributions.

The 2010 Positive Peace Award nominees are judged by the United Nations NGO (Non-Governmental Organizations) Voting Academy comprised of highly respected United Nations NGOs, such as Rotary International, Pathways to Peace, and Sister Cities International. The Voting Academy will use an established criteria of a coach's community involvement and impact on their community to determine this year's winner.

"Celebrate Positive congratulates Sherri Coale for exemplifying what giving back to the community means" said Scott Pederson, President and CEO, Celebrate Positive. "Coach Coale's positive impact goes beyond the Oklahoma community. Her concern for the international community has inspired her players and Sooner fans everywhere".

Coale was nominated by Journey Church in Norman for her team traveling to Port au Prince, Haiti to help serve earthquake victims. Coale also helped efforts to raise money to build a hospital for victims of the January earthquake through banquets, auctions and appearances.

"Coach Coale cares deeply about her players and shows concern for their development off of the basketball court", said Adam Barnett of Journey Church. "The Haiti trip is a perfect example of the kind of leadership she provides her players, and the positive impact she has on the world."

Rotary International, with over 33,000 Clubs and 1.2 million members in over 200 countries serves on the United Nations NGO Voting Academy.

"We at Rotary International are honored to serve on the voting committee for the United Nations NGO Positive Peace Awards," says RI General Secretary Ed Futa. "Every day, Rotary's 1.2 million members address the question, how do we make our world a better place? How appropriate that these awards recognize those individuals and organizations who are asking the same question and taking the necessary steps to achieve positive change in our world."

The winner of the sports categories for 2010 United Nations NGO Positive Peace Award will be announced in December.

"Sherri Coale is uniquely gifted as a leader, teacher, and mentor," said OU Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Programs and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione. "Her coaching accomplishments highlighted by significant numbers of victories and championships are overwhelming, but no more so than the profound impact she has had on the lives of those she has coached.

"Sherri takes a unique interest in their personal development and I am often impressed at the way young people grow and mature under her guidance. As a former classroom educator, she places great emphasis on academic performance and it shows in the outstanding grade point averages and graduation rates we see in her program.

"There are a number of people in our profession who talk about the development of the 'total person.' The program developed by Sherri Coale here at the University of Oklahoma has to be amongst the greatest examples of creating an environment for that goal to be realized."

OK, let us just dispense with the pleasantries and go straight to the point - I need to call someone out. Now. Today.
http://i52.tinypic.com/mh349c.png

No, not Joanna McFarland, who at least gives us some hope of a post presence and occasional rebounding. She is not Courtney Paris, but then again, nobody is yet (because until Maya Moore gets to the end of her senior year, there is still only ONE... four-time all-american in college womens basketball history).

No, I am calling out the other player standing in Exhibit A, who like in this picture, always seems to be standing around on offense as everyone runs circles around her, trying to make some semblance of scoring happen. It got to the point last night that Arkansas wasn't even guarding her, because there was no risk of her attempting to score, or at least a very minor, minor risk at anything.

Jasmine Hartman.

With at much space as the Lady Hogs (ewwww) were giving you on offense, you should have ended up with more than four points (which coincidentally, is the number of turnovers on your box score stats). You occasionally get some good assists in, but for the most part, I watch our offense perplexed, wondering how a junior of your talent can possibly only be a star on defense for the most part.

And then... last night, it became clear. They would mug D-Rob in full-court pressure even when they're up by 10. They would clog the lane to prevent Joanna from getting easy lay-ups. They would face-guard Morgan le Tre and Vegas (Aaryn Ellenberg's Sherri-appointed nickname) to prevent open three's.

But you... they didn't care about guarding you.

Are you just going to dribble up at the 3-point line and LET them disrespect you? Are you OK with opponents double-teaming someone because they don't have to stick a defender on you anymore???

We are now ten games into the season - all 10 of which you have started, logging on average about 28 per game. In this time, you've only shot seven free throws (only making 3) and accumulated a grand total of... 33 points.

I'm not trying to be cruel, but this is your junior year. You only have four years to play college sports and your time is more than halfway up at this point. Nyeshia Stevenson once hesitated on her shots also, but learned by her senior year that hesitating is no way to play basketball... and it's probably torture, too. It's time for you to be an upperclasswomen leader on both offense and defense. It's time for you to make defenses pay for not respecting your scoring ability. It's time for Jasmine Hartman to be the star that we recruited in the same class as Whitney Hand. Step it up, girl.

:(

PS: We lost to Arky in case you didn't hear. Boo. The 10-point loss was mostly a meltdown in the second half with tons of turnovers, actually much closer and we led much of the game till late when the scariest, manliest opposing center started frightening children in attendance. Cue the trolling that Stoops got during the football season - derp derp, you win at home during your big home winning streak, but not on the road? Derrrrrp

Jas really needs to find out what she's doing on the court. We allowed them to play 5 on 4 defense all game because she was on the court, and we're not good enough on O to have that happen.

I liked what I saw from Hook, and Ellenberg showed up even though she was struggling. How can you be a junior, watching those two do everything they can to score, then get a pass at the top of the key and stand there looking around as the defense gives you ten feet to do whatever you want?

They weren't even looking at you at one point! That is disrespect, right there.

Maybe the return of Whitney can reduce Jaz to more of the role player she really is. She shouldn't be playing the type of minutes she's playing because she's so offensively limited (although I agree with you that it seems like she puts the limits on herself by not even ATTEMPTING any offensive production).

Jaz is a help on defense but she's murdering us on the offensive end of the court. I don't know why she doesn't try to go to the basket more and use her strength advantage over most other guards to get a shot.

Morgan was off Sunday night in her home state, while Vegas replaced her 3's with eight *yes I said eight* turnovers.

As for who Whitney Hand will steal minutes from, I think it will be a mix of Jaz and her very good friend Carlee. While she's out there doing warmup drills and practicing and all, I'm just not sure that Whitney will be ready to mega-contribute right away, so there's the possibility that she'll be taking some of Morgan's minutes off-the-bench... but she gets 26 a night, so don't feel too bad. Morgan lately has been playing more than starters with her hot hand (well, not too hot Sunday) so maybe that off-the-bench spark role will be Whitney's before she assumes her usual starter spot again.

The women have a 10-day break, so since I haven't done this recently, have a Coale pic:

As far as tickets, you can get them at the door or just hold up the # of tickets you need and you'll probably get some for free from a fan with extra! :D

I've been to several games and have been able to get great lower level seats outside about an hour before. Just hold up the amount you need and I'm sure you'll get some. I've always been happy to pay face value but most folks have never wanted the $$. You shouldn't have a problem at all. Enjoy it!

Sorry for not mentioning last night's game beforehand. I've been under the weather lately and honest-to-gawd... forgot they were playing. I fail at being a fan :(

I've been a fan of this team for a long time, but I can't remember us hitting century as often as we have lately, not even back when we had Stacey, LaNeisha and Roz (in fact, I don't think we hit century at all that year). We scored 118 points last night to Pine Bluff's 52. Holy. Sh!t.

It seems like everything that went wrong last game went right this game. Turnovers kept to a minimum, more free throws, more 3's, you name it.

In fact you name it - here's the box score (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/stats/2010-2011/20101229.html). Everyone played awesome, so let's just name the team the player of the game. Go us :)

Whitney Hand has this look on her face of desperation, like she's been waiting a season and a half to get back on the court, but still hoping that her teammates could provide just a little bit of HELP!!!! here.

Alas, the help did not come, the team blew a four-point lead at halftime to lose by seven, despite it being Hand's Homecoming, return to the game and first double-double all rolled into one night, fresh off boyfriend Landry's BCS debut.

There is chatter that this is not a good team, that we aren't beating the opponents top teams should, that this is not our year. I would tend to agree with you, but then, I think of last year's blog and all the meltdown angst rants I did after losses last year. We didn't win the conference, we weren't ranked as high as the Paris years, we blew the conference tourney and when we drew Nebraska in our bracket, all hope seemed lost once again.

So, no angst, no meltdowns this year. Unlike the BCS, you don't need to win every game, you just need to win the right games. TCU, alas, is not one of those must-win games, so we'll be fine. Let the kiddos learn, let Whitney get back into game shape (by playing her 37 minutes?!?!?!?!) and we'll get there... even if conference season opens in less than a week and we look hit-or-miss at this point.

With Whitney back, let's make the stats all-Whitney, shall we?

Whitney's starting, so you're on the bench: Jasmine Hartman.
I speculated that either Jaz or Carlee would get benched as soon as Whitney was ready to start again. As it turns out, Sherri wasted no time getting Whitney in the game as soon as she was medically cleared to compete.

Whitney's new protege: Morgan Hook
D-Rob's protege, Aaryn Ellenberg, was also benched, so Morgan le Tre got the start as well. Interesting...

Whitney stole your stat: Joanna McFarland
You would expect our post player to lead the team in boards, but no, Whitney got 11 rebounds to get her double-double. Holy crap.

Whitney stole your stats too: Danielle Robinson
The usual team leader in minutes, points, steals and turnovers had to defer to Whitney (or share) all four.

Whitney's watching everyone miss her shots: Whitney (and team)
This really was the game sealer for TCU - the Sooners missed a lot of free throws (13 for 19, 68 percent) and three's (8 for 30, 26 percent) and just shot bad from the field in general (24 for 70, 34 percent). Hand is not off the Hook here though, as she only made four of her 13 three attempts.

While I didn't get to see the game (stupid Mountain West Network), it really bothers me that they shot 36 free throws to our 19, especially with the game tied with about three minutes left. That suggests that it wasn't just clock stopping fouls, but just a lot of fouls against OU in general.

In any event, welcome back, Whitney. We missed you. Please never get injured again. And now, Sherri Coale:

"It was a one possession game for almost the entire second half, and we got wide open shots and didn't finish them... We didn't chase down rebounds and we gave them second shots. You can't send another team to the free throw line 27 times in a half. That's obscene."

We finally open the conference schedule after much waiting and more waiting (for Whitney Hand).

Speaking of, look at SS.com's preview page (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/010611aaa.html) and you'll see season stats of the projected starters:

Whitney Hand, G, 6-1,RS-So., 24 ppg, 11 rpg

:D I guess there's one benefit to sitting out half the season...

Nebbish is not the same team that started undefeated and continued undefeated throughout the regular conference season... then tanked in the conference and ncaa tournies. But, after the TCU loss, we're not in any position to take anyone lightly.

What a difference one player - Griffin #23 - and a year makes, as I'm sure OU mens basketball fans can attest to. Such was the case with last year's (conference regular season) undefeated Big 12 champion Lady Huskers, who lost their superstar Griffin (who yes, wore jersey #23) and thus, ensures that every team will be getting their vengeance this year.

70-50

Despite a 20-point victory and despite how much I love this team, I'm not sure if they love me back and are making me suffer so... consider:

They love me: Three point shooting
45 percent is awesome and isn't even one of our best shooting days from behind the arch.

They love me not: Free throw shooting
70 percent is a higher percentage than 45 percent, yes, but it sucks for free shots (I'll say it again: Free throws should be free!). It also stinks that we once again didn't shoot as many as our opponent (We shot 10, they shot 22)

They love me: Scoring
Two freshmen were among the top scorers (Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg with 19, Morgan "le Tre" Hook with 16), then recently returned Whitney Hand added 18... making D-Rob the fourth-leading scorer with 12. VERY good sign when it isn't the same person leading the team every game.

They loathe me: Rebounding
Why is Vegas, a freshman guard, the team's leading rebounder, and why does our leading rebounder have SIX rebounds?!

They might not hate me after all: Assists/turnovers
16 to 15 is not terri-bad, but it's not something that I'm really, really happy about either.

Since SS.com doesn't have a photo gallery this game, and Husker Extra posted several pics of our girls making faces... go ahead! Check it out (http://huskerextra.com/gallery/womens-basketball/collection_2a9c181b-28e7-511e-a638-e2868da99957.html#0)... I'll just name a player of the game sans photo:

Player of the game: Aaryn Ellenberg

It's probably not easy giving up your starter spot for a game when you've been starting most of the season, but you came back and had arguably the best performance on the team Saturday. Led the team in points (19), rebounds (6), steals (tied with others with 3) and and 2 assists to your 1 turnover. Keep it up. If Sherri didn't tell you all already, after the New Year and conference season starts, there's no more freshmen, just Sooners.

And now, Sherri Coale:

I'm loving coaching them... They learn and they get better. A team's ceiling exists wherever their IQ takes them. I think this team has a chance to have a really high IQ. There are a lot of different things we can do. Young guys are coming along.

I took the obviously broken Froshie Dial-a-Three away from the engineering students and tried the meteorologists-in-training instead over at the College of Earth and Energy. Alas, they changed it into a weather map of fail, which also happens to be the grade I gave them:

http://i53.tinypic.com/2ajv2ip.jpg

Our ice-cold 0-9 three-point shooting was coupled with mostly cloudy free throw shooting (14-22) making this game extremely difficult to watch... but hey, win's a win. I'll recap for real later today.

Cruel irony point of the game: When the only three we make gets whistled off by the refs due to a BS call sending the ball back to K-State

Man, I thought my head was going to explode when the game went kind of like this:

OU 4, KSU 0: Yay, off to a good start!
OU 4, KSU 8: Wtf, Sooners... why are we missing so many shots...
OU: 13, KSU 20: Seriously now, WHAT. THE. EFF, Sooner?!?!

The good thing is, I was apparently not the only blond chick to feel this way, as a smiling-but-secretly-fuming Sherri Coale was like "You can't score 15 points and win a game!" at halftime. Even though the UN gave her that little peace award, I imagine her negotiations for her team to get out of their shooting funk were anything but peaceable.

Enter... Jelina Cerina!
http://i54.tinypic.com/vpunug.png

The era of abusing players through malnutrition (one college women's coach would apparrently not let her team stop for food after road losses in Illinois), finger poking (Mangino) or locking players in sheds (Leach, allegedly) are over, so when Coale is angry, you not only get BENCHED, the player that subs in for you is not one of the regular rotation.

“Her making the initial lay-up (of the second half) was huge -- just knowing we could throw it into the block and score. She did a good job of setting screens for Danielle and all she needs is space to operate and she can get to the rim regardless and Jelena created that. Hated that she got some quick fouls, I think she could have been even more instrumental, but that will come with patience and experience.”

Scoring 37 points in the second half after a pathetic 15 in the first, I think the message got through.

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (20)
The only Sooner in double digits. As the weather map shows above, it was an ice-cold shooting night.

Rebound machine: Carlee (8)
17 of the team's 27 rebounds were offensive. That really made a difference down the stretch.

Ball thief: D-Rob (5)
It was funny to see a team that could out-turnover us. K-State simply couldn't hold onto the ball.

Alas, that is the extent of the good. Now, the bad:

Whitney's watching herself miss her shot: Whitney and her teammates
Oh-fer night. Jaz was either called for a travel or offensive foul as she passed out to Morgan Hook for our only made three... and thus, it was not a made three at all

Free throws SHOULD be free!!!!!: It is amazing that we can shoot so well from three-point range (most nights) and shoot so poorly from a closer line, uncontested. We shot 63 percent last night. Booo.

Player of the Game: Joanna McFarland
http://i55.tinypic.com/1zp64ps.png
I know that the honor should probably go to the scoring and stealing leader and SS.com declared as much during their broadcast. But, when the team needed a lift (and some d@mn made free throws!!!!!!) Joanna was there. When we needed rebounds or to stick a hand in the face of their shooters to force some more kitty turnovers, Joanna was there. So, you go, girl!

And now, Sherri Coale:

“She had a huge impact on the game and on the offense. She can do that and she will continue to do that. She’s been in her own way a little bit and maybe that shoved some of those obstacles out of the way for her. She’s a very good player when she doesn’t think too much. She’s so smart sometimes she thinks herself into a hole. But she cut loose there and that’s the competitor in her and that’s over-riding the intellectual maybe, just finding a way to win this game.”

Our next conference opponent is the whorns... the lady whorns. Eff Texas.

Boomer!

PS: You can't see it in the shots I provided, but the "System of Dress" unis had a state of Oklahoma red icon above the names on the backs of the jerseys. When Peggy Hill retired from coaching UT womens basketball, Texas thought they could jump to the top of the monster that is Big 12 womens basketball by simply spending a lot of money to bring in Duke's Gail G. As we can all see thus far, the experiment has failed... and if they used even more money to pay off the refs to foul out our centers, that didn't work either.

71-67 in overtime Hook em

Alas, it wasn't just the ticky tack fouls called against our tallest players late in the game to foul out McFarland and Cerina (yes, I also noticed that she's playing more lately), but also the fact that we can't make a 3 to save our lives (shot 3 for 21, ouch)

Aside from awful ranged shooting and ref screwjobbin', let's just go straight to the player of the game honoree:

http://i51.tinypic.com/11ju0s2.jpg
For playing all 45 minutes, for stealing the ball five times, for scoring 30 points, and for hitting the free throw to put us up by four instead of three as time expired in OT.

Oh yes, we won that game. Despite the refs giving them 35 free throws, the whorns could only make like 22 or 23 of them. They had a brief lead at the end of regulation, which they gave away and nearly gave the game away (Whitney missed a last-second shot at the baseline, just inside the three-point line).

Our next game is 7 p.m. tomorrow hosting Tech.

Everyone, this is Monica Engleman. (http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/kan/sports/w-baskbl/auto_original/4266220.jpeg)

She is among the reasons why KU lost two straight games to Big 12 South opponents at Allen Fieldhouse in two days - yesterday's embarrassment to UT on the men's side, us today on the women's side.

We have indeed found our shot back and while we had some turnover and fouling issues, we looked very good on defense, giving ourselves second chances at missed shots and moving the ball. The best part was all the times KU would actually get a good shot in, they'd forget to go back on defense and would give up 2 (sometimes 3) points immediately. They were pwn3d, just like their men were yesterday in the second half of their game.

We might not be bound for a third-straight Final Four, but our team has our moments. Today was one of those moments. I'll do more recap later after a certain football game.

Not bad for our fifth conference win, not to mention a win on the road... even if it was against Kansas. Even though they invented basketball or whatever Naismith did for them, it's amazing how one of their programs can be so successful and the other not... then again, that's kind of the situation OU's in right now, and a majority of you would probably prefer KU's men-centric situation... but, save that  thought for a different day, because this past weekend was anything but KU basketball dominance on either side at their home turf... court... etc. :D

Since the Sooners found their shot again (or at least a few of them did), honors return!

Scoring Sooner: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg (28)
Honorable mention to Whitney Hand's 21.

Rebounding machine: Joanna McFarland (14)

Whitney's watching you make her shot: Vegas (6 for 10)
Whitney also watched herself go 3 for 6 from the three-point line.

Ball thief: Carlee (3)
ROFL also added six rebounds. The commentators were openly speculating that she was distracted by her big bro's upcoming game that night. <sigh> That's what happens when your last name isn't Smith, I guess...

It was a very tough night for our taller Sooners, as the refs once again called the tickiest, tackiest fouls they could. However, Jelina, Nicole, Joanna, Carlee and Lyndsey seem to be rotating in and out of the game quite well if that's the way the officials are gonna call it. Despite the awesomeness of our post presence, there's one player that really kept KU from getting back into the game in the second half, and that was none other than...

http://fabandfru.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/las-vegas.jpg
Sorry, SS.com didn't have a slideshow to go with this game :P Whenever KU tried to push their deficit into single digits, Vegas hit a three. Whenever Vegas didn't hit a three, someone else did, the honorable mention:
http://dayscarpetcare.com/hand_print.jpg
Once again, SS.com didn't have game photos for the KU game, sorry! :( Whitney and Aaryn were on fire last night, and it's about time, isn't it? :D

And now, Sherri Coale:

We didn’t have a shootaround today... I said at halftime to my coaches we’re never going to go through a shootaround again. Vegas (Ellenberg) is always relaxed whether we have shootaround or not.

There is absolutely no more frustrating opponent to deal with in any sport than Texas A&M, and it's only partially due to the fact that their cheerleaders are male hospital orderlies and their highest ranking official is a border collie.

http://ordinaryleastsquare.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/01/01/referee_2.jpg

Why is it that there is one set of rules for all other games we play, but an entirely different set of rules when our opponent is A&M? Suddenly, a foul is phantom contact. A charge is when the opposing player falls over (from more phantom contact) and every star player is on the bench because of foul trouble halfway through the first half. Argh.

I can cope with a 13-point deficit at halftime. We've fought back through so many halftime deficits before under Sherri, and several this season, if I'm not mistaken. But the refs and the refs alone made me go kill zombies at halftime. Both Sherri and the Aggie coach (some dude, forget his name) were obviously frustrated with the reffing too, because Sherri might as well have covered her face in blush at one point.

But... they fought back. Here's a look at the top performers:

...oh man, as a sidetrack, this is one of the main photos on SS.com, which is where I pull stats from. Go men's tennis!

Ok... the stats for real this time :)

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (33)
Although I nearly screamed when she couldn't get us the lead (or tie) in the closing minute :(

Whitney's shot: Carlee (2 for 2)
When you watch a low-def broadcast of Sooner basketball on a high-def television, the players sometimes get blurry shooting from the corners... I swore once it was Whitney's three when it was actually Carlee... and while Whitney hit one more than Carlee last night, hard to argue with perfection. Way to go, ROFL!

Ball thief: Whitney (3)
She really adds so much more to the team than just 3's. It's why she's out there almost 100 percent of the time every game since she's returned from injury... including last night.

FREE throws: Aaryn (3 for 3)
On a night when the team shoots 70 percent from the line, I wish Aaryn was on the line more often :(

Alas, the dishonors:

Foul happy: Joanna (4)
Ah, I knew the return of "Four Foul" McFarland was inevitable, but she gets a pass tonight because of the awful reffing.

Those effing turnovers: Team (18)
Although Aggroid had 20 of them, turnovers, more than anything else, led to our first half big arse deficit.

It cannot be said enough times - the refs cost us this game and since we will only have to play A&M once, maybe twice more, perhaps I can live with that, especially since the girls never gave up, regardless what the deficit was. But don't take my word for it, here's Sherri Coale:

I thought we did some really good things. I loved our grit and our toughness, the way we fought back and the way we executed in the face of the pressure. We just really battled. We cut into the rebounding margin even though we were under-sized. We just put ourselves in the position to win. I think it speaks volumes about where our potential lies.

Ah, potential - the reason why we can go the entire 2009-10 season without a trophy till we win one for our Final Four appearance... might have something to do with the conference?

First of all, this is a reflection of how tough this conference is. What other conference has games that go like this? It was just an exchange of blows back and forth and it was high caliber basketball. I watch other leagues and I’m amazed of how tough ours is every single night.

ESPN did an interesting feature on womens basketball recruiting here (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/news/story?id=6060641). Basically, it's how programs try to use code words to steer recruits based on which programs are gay and which programs are straight.

It sounds silly, but as the sport gets more competitive, coaches will say anything to get recruits.

I'm not worried about OU being gay or straight, because when we talk about the OU family, we're not trying to let you know we're not all gay

Besides that, we're had players that I think we can safely assume were gay (Rosalind Ross, who was reportedly killed by her girlfriend) and straight (Stephanie Simon, married to ex-Sooner QB Nate Hybl), so we're neither straight nor gay... we're just awesome :D

Anyway, check it out - interesting note on Baylor and perhaps the real reason why UConn and Tennessee don't play annually anymore.

As for today, the domination by OU of the Cowgirls continues. It was closer than we'd like, though, 82-77, at the Pantry of Doom.

I also saw that the Lady Ag fans are trying to claim yet another moral victory (or at least one), on the Daily Oklahoma's site below the first game story:

Einstein, oklahoma city 15 minutes ago

the cowgirls played them close.... a lot closer than Coale would have liked. This is a as good as a win for OSU and a loss for OU

I think it's funny that their game thread turned into a "who is a thug?" argument instead of talking about the game. Since it was brought up, I'll discuss this argument further when I recap the game.

But for the record right now, the only player I've ever worried about on our team during my fandom (since 2001) on the Sooners being either too aggressive or too ball hoggish was Amanda Thompson, and that was only her first season. After her injury, none of her froshie self was left, except the mad ball skillz :)

It's like they can't help but be complete classless idiots no matter what sport they're talking about. I still can't believe we have to share the same state with them. They don't deserve to represent the name Oklahoma. What an embarrassment.

Also, OU still won despite the refs doing everything they could to help out OSU.

Is this woman a ball hog or a thug?
http://i51.tinypic.com/25zqur6.jpg
The short answer: No. The long answer: HELL, no.

I do not think you will ever see D-Rob called for a technical, get ejected from a game, or even foul out very often. Suspensions? Definitely not. Suspensions from postseason play? HahahahaNO.

I have never minced words when talking about my disdain for ex-Pokette Andrea Riley and Baylor's Britney Griner. Both have not only been ejected from games, but have been suspended from postseason play because their actions warranted more punishment.

As for the ballhog assertions, you don't have teammates - FRESHMAN teammates - scoring as much as Morgan le Tre and Vegas if your point guard doesn't get them the ball. And just read the stats below...

How bout the game?

82-77

I'll admit that I missed this game due to another event. However, judging from the box score and recaps I've read, we had a lot of foul trouble among key players. And this is Pokette we're talking about, not just the womens bball team, but Poke State in general. They quadruple circle this game on their schedule and consider this season a success if they can just beat us fairweather fan cheatin' gooners. So, I guess your season's still a failure :P

Scoring Sooner: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg (23)
HOLY COW! You mean our "ballhog" Danielle Robinson wasn't our leading scorer?! OMG! WTF?! I'd add, ROFL, but I kind of reserve that term for Rofl-berger ;)

I'm not a ball hog, dammit!: D-Rob (7)
Are you saying that our ballhog ALSO led the team in assists?! Well, I bet she took a TON of shots, even if she didn't get the points, right?

FREE throws: D-Rob (10 for 10)
What a ball hog! You mean she accepted the ball from the refs when they handed it to her for free throws?! Booooooo! Stop hogging the balllllll

Rebound machine: Whitney Hand (9)
"Four Foul" McFarland (who ironically also had four fouls) added 8. Glad to see this stat improve.

Whitney's shot: Team (12 for 24)
Carlee shot 3 for 5. Vegas shot 4 for 9. Whitney shot 3 for 6. Morgan le Tre shot 2 for 4. Instead of looking for reasons for why we almost lost, look right here for the reason why we won.

and now, for something completely different:

Foul happy: Four with four.
Carlee ROFL, Whitney Hand, Joanna McFarland and Danielle Robinson all managed to stack up four fouls each. Sounds like a lot of ticky tack calls against us, but again, didn't see the game, so I will just assume that the refs suck, not us :)

Free throws SHOULD be free: Team (69.2 percent)
It perplexes me how an uncontested shot with no clock pressure whatsoever can be almost as difficult (if not more difficult) for some Sooners than the three-point shot. I'll just leave it at that.

Turnover queen: Vegas (5)
I also dishonor Whitney here, for having three to her one assist. ROFL too, for having two. At least as a team, we *only* had 12.

Player of the game: Danielle Robinson
http://i54.tinypic.com/30s7igz.jpg
Right now, I'm picturing Boomer Sooner sung to the words "nyah nyah" because I am convinced that we stole your victory, and we did it through D-Rob's leadership. Not her thuggery, because she is not a thug, not her ball hogging, because as already established, she's not a ball hog, but because she's an All-American and yours graduated. And now, your leading scorer has 16 points instead of 30-something. So, "nyah nyah" Pokettes, we continue to dominate you. Till you find your next Andrea Riley, we'll continue. Sorry... but not really sorry at all :P

And now, Sherri Coale... eff it, let's go with Danielle Robinson today, shall we?

It's a great rivalry, and we always look forward to it. Give credit to Oklahoma State. It's always a battle when we come up here.

Wow, the player you insulted just complimented your team. Feel bad now! Feel guilty now! Hate me, not her, because I'm rubbing the loss in your face where she gives you credit! ;)

Don't forget, the evil D-Rob also "celebrated on their floor" last year at the Pantry. I couldn't believe that was an issue to anyone, but they sure brought it up on FSN yesterday.

I haven't read that "D-Rob is a thug" thread yet, but I might for comic relief. I imagine that Riley has thrown more punches in her NCAA career than Danielle has in her entire life.

Also, if you haven't seen it yet, check out the DOK's game story with the comments board below it. Some Poke fan said it was "as good as a victory for us and like a loss for OU..." or something to that effect. Unbelievable!

For people like that, who ironically registered at the DOK site as "Einstein," they should just rename the school "Dish It Out But Can't Take It State."

To be clear, I am not saying that D-Rob is less of a thug than Britney Griner, Andrea Riley or some A&M chicks or something. I'm saying she's not a thug, period. No comparison, no whining "but, but, YOUR team has/had someone who was MUCH WORSE!" There's no comparison needed. Compare her to a saint if you want.

Of all the delusional things to post, saying Danielle is a thug at all really takes the proverbial cake.

Then again, this is the fan base that probably still worships Hart Lee Dykes.

And, FWIW, between Dykes and Andrea Riley, they have ONE career win vs. OU. And that was Riley's big game in the Pantry that had the media in Oklahoma coronating her and OSU as the new "it" thing in Oklahoma women's collegiate basketball.

^^^what he said.

Iowa State is a good win for several reasons. One, it's a ranked team win. Two, it's Sherri Coale's nemesis. Three, we soooo shouda lost yesterday if not for late clutch free throws from D-Rob and Jaz Hartman.

Of note:

FREE throws: 87.5 percent! (14 of 16)
We were 6 for 6 to end the game. I had no idea how we were going to pull the game off, down three, then D-Rob goes to the line, sinks two. D-Rob goes to the line, sinks two more. Jaz goes to the line, sinks two (after a stellar rebound off of a 3-miss by ISU on the other side). Then, ISU runs out the clock instead of taking a game-typing three. Whoops!

Turnovers: 11 versus 24
We forced ISU to give up the ball 24 times. Unlike the men's game, the free throws didn't keep our opponent in it, they only shot 10 (we shot 17 total).

Of bad note:
Three pointers: 5 of 18 (27.8 percent)
Worst part, I think we were 5 of 8 in the first half, so did we really miss 10 three's in the second half? Oh man. No wonder they came back into the game :(

Players of the game: D-Rob, Jaz Hartman... and Whitney Hand
These three won the game in the final few minutes, D and Jaz for their free throws, Whitney for a much-needed turnover which led to some of Danielle's free throws.

“I thought our looks were good, we just went cold. Maybe we put up one too many 3’s early in the second half but they were good looks. That’s the way we play so you stay with that and stay with who you are. I think it’s just the gritty defensive plays down the stretch, obviously Whitney’s (Hand) deflection late that gave us possession that was huge. Danielle’s (Robinson) offensive rebound was huge and obviously Jasmine (Hartman) defending in the end, getting a rebound and making free throws. Just sticking together, collectively fighting which is what we needed today and so maybe a blessing in disguise to have that type of game.”

In case you're wondering what it is like to be on the winning end of a 20-point-plus victory in an Oklahoma-Misery basketball matchup after watching the men's side, fear not, for the women also played Mizzou on Saturday!

69-47

I love games like this, because we had all 13 of our players on the roster see some playing time in front of our home fans in a conference matchup. Mizzou is not just from the state of Misery, it was definitely in a state of misery during this game. As this was a bit lopsided, a few new honorees to...um... honor!

Scoring Sooner: Joanna (14)
Yeah I know, right? We had four Sooners in double figures and two of them were freshmen (yup, Le Tre and Vegas, but of course). The fourth was Lyndsey Cloman.

Rebounding machine: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg (7)
Huh? What? Yes, a short speedy froshie had the most rebounds. Second-most was... Jasmine Hartman. :D

Sharing Sooner: Hart (4)
The most assists came from Jaz.

FREE throws: Lyndsey, Joanna and Kodi (Combined 18 of 18)
I could also toss Carlee ROFL (1 of 1) in here to round out our quartet of perfect free throw shooters. Joanna and Lyndsey shot 8 for 8, while Kodi actually got to the line in the closing minutes to hit 2 for 2. Yes, that Kodi, the walk-on :)

There just has to be something we can correct before meeting UConn on Monday, right? Well, since you asked, the wtf dishonors for unbelievably bad stats:

D-Rob, wtf: 6 turnovers, 5 points, no steals and only two assists.
On the positive side, she shot one three pointer and made it :)

Nicole Griffin, wtf: 1 for 5 from the free throw line.
On the positive side, she was 3 for 3 from the field.

Whitney Hand, wtf: No three point attempts, no free throw attempts, 1 for 4 from the field.
On the positive side... um, she had a block?

Players of the game: The newbs

From left to right: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg, Nicole Griffin, Jelina Cerina (she's from Serbia), Jacqueline Jeffcoat, Morgan "Le Tre" Hook. Pics stolen from the Mizzou game photo album and media guide on SS.com.

I admittedly was worried at the beginning of the season when D-Rob was repeatedly our leading scorer, the one our offense and entire team seemed to win and lose by. This game especially shows that the future of OU women's basketball is in good hands, not just from our returning leaders like Whitney Hand, Joanna McFarland and Jaz, but our juco transfer Jelina Cerina (all she has to do is put a hand up and we're a million times better on defense and getting rebounds) and our freshmen hotshot recruits Jacqueline Jeffcoat (now returned from mono and looking to be one of our most athletic players), Nicole Griffin (our tallest player and best blocker on defense, improving every game), Morgan Le Tre (who not only hits threes but has shown to be very good at driving to the basket) and Vegas (who will likely lead our offense after D-Rob graduates).

Look out UConn. This froshie (and juco transfer) class is the one that is going to lead OU to finally beating you... in this season or the next.

And like usual, here's Sherri Coale:

“That’s the way we have been practicing lately. We have been trying to get everybody in, everybody to contribute, and everybody to do what they can with the time their given. I am really proud that everybody did what they could today.”

We take on UConn on national TV 6 p.m. Monday. Game's on both ESPN3.com online and ESPN2 on the tee vee. If you want to see this team at least once before the postseason tourneys, this would be a good time.

You can also view the game's box score here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/stats/2010-2011/20110214.html) The game recap at SS.com is here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/021411aaa.html) You can also view photos on that page of our pinkie uniforms, but thank gawd, not the Maya Moore cam (remember the Tebow cam from his last bowl game? A billion times worse! They didn't even use a different camera from the main game one!)

Here's some Cliff's Notes:

Our three-shooting sucked: 13.6 from behind the arch, 3 for 22 overall.

The rest of our shooting sucked too: 19 of 64, 29.7 percent overall.

Our sole free throw shooter: Nicole got to the line five times, making four. Nobody else on our team shot any. Gaaaahhhhhhh

Turnovers NOT the problem: We had 17, they had 16. It would have been nice to have less, though.

Everyone suffered, except Jelina: Everyone got to contribute to our 41-point loss except Jelina. Even Kodi and Jaq got two minutes each at the XL Center.

There's a bright side: We only lost the second half by 13. It was the first half deficit of 28 that really sunk us.

For those of you that missed the Maya cam, I rigged one of the game's photos to impersonate it:
http://i56.tinypic.com/1zd82s7.png
Basically, it was not even a separate camera, it was not a different angle, and they didn't zoom in at all - it was a side by side of the same d@mn camera with nothing but Maya in the shot! It was totally worthless, but then again, so is ESPN sometimes.

I'm afraid I am being too easy on our team, it seems. This is what Sherri had to say afterward:

"UConn had a competitive fire on every possession and I am embarrassed, I am embarrassed by our lack of fight. In fifteen years I have to say that this is the worst loss."

You can read more quotes here. (http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/021411aac.html) Poor Sherri. We still love you. The team too. It's UConn. We'll all get over it. The Maya Cam? THAT was embarrassing.

To the first point....Really? Not a very good argument there. Pretty sure they could have gone for 100 and won by 50 or 60 if they really wanted to.

Secondly, yes you are being too easy. Losing by 40 is embarrassing. I just hope they don't have to play them again this year. A less than zero percent chance of winning that matchup if it does happen.

What do the score of last night's womens game and 65-13 have in common?

91-62

Both were the largest margins of victory in an OU-Texas game in each of their particular sports... and this is despite losing D-Rob most of the game with her foul trouble (eventually fouling out).

It was a tremendous team effort on their part. I thought when we got Danielle (Robinson) in foul trouble in the first half would be a good sign for us. But they had players that really stepped forward, specifically, Whitney (Hand) in the first half and Aaryn (Ellenberg) in the second. I am very disappointed with our overall effort. We have a quick turn-around. We need to fix things quick.

Coaches of the nation beware: Texas will present you with a large stack of money in return for leaving your current program and it's successes. Stay out of Austin! And if you're in Austin, leave as soon as possible! (Will Muschamp approves of this message)

In case you're wondering how we nearly won by 30 when we were only up by 16 at the half, we simply didn't miss shots in the second half, even the most wild prayer shots that should normally have no chance of going in... those, too, were going in... and Gail G probably wanted outta the Big 12 more than ever at those moments, because Texas' shots weren't falling like that :D

The awards!

Team effort: All 13 players.
This was once again a game where everyone logged minutes. I love it. Keep everyone involved!

Scoring Sooner: Whitney Hand (23)
She only missed four of her shots, and none of those misses were for 3... or for 1. Honorable mention to Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg, with 21.

Whitney's shot: Whitney (3 for 3)
The team shot 7 for 12, 58 percent, which was a large reason why the margin of victory was so... um, large.

FREE throws: Team (12 for 15)
80 percent still means there's room for improvement, but this seems better than it has been lately.

Ball thieves: Team (14)
Texas had 25 turnovers compared with our 12, and it was mostly because we wouldn't let them keep the ball, hehe.

Sharing Sooners: Team (16 assists)
Texas had 8 assists, another reason why they sucked last night.

And now... the others:
Rebounding? Bueller? Bueller?: This kills me, because it seems like we should be more dominant in this stat with our boxing out and tall chicks in the post area... alas, nobody's seemed to excel consistently in this category like some of our previous players did.

Player of the game: Whitney Hand

Oh man where to start... the player we all missed dearly for her three-point shooting has clearly been working on other aspects of her game during her time off. So setting aside the fact that she led the team in scoring (again, 23), free throw percentage (4 for 4) and field goals (8 for 12), she also led the team in assists (4), steals (3, tied with Jaz) and even added four boards. This was despite the fact that she sat down with most starters in the closing minutes of the second half, letting teammates also get the chance to embarrass Texas. Welcome back, Whitney!

We have so many faithful people that follow us and support us and we let everybody down. We let ourselves down. I think when you perform like that you have to be on a mission the next game. You prove who you are by the next performance.

Seriously, welcome back after that disaster.

And now, Sherri!

“I’m really proud of our basketball team. I think that our fans overall should be. I think it’s one thing to play like that and it’s another thing to play like that coming off what we endured on Monday. It takes a great deal of character, intestinal fortitude and resolve and belief to be able to do that and I’m very proud of how we answered that today. This isn’t the end all, we can’t stop and we still have to improve but I couldn’t be more proud of this group of kids.”

The ladies (don't call 'em Lady Sooners like Billy does) return to action 8 p.m. Oklahoma time on Wednesday, visiting Colorado for hopefully the last time, allegedly getting televised by FSN.

I'd add another award, that being the Player Who Kept the Ship on Course When the AA PG Got 3 Quick Fouls award, & it goes to Jaz. When she came in for DRob, it looked like the guys didn't miss a beat, & JH herself was especially aggressive on the offensive end. That little hesitation dribble move she had was a thing of beauty.

There's really not much to say - we trailed at half, we trailed at the end... token stat run:

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (21)
Only two Sooners scored in double figures. The other was Morgan, with 10.

Rebounding machine: Whitney (8)
She only scored three points last night, so this was her stat highlight.

It wasn't the threes: 33 percent (4 for 12)

It also wasn't the frees: 87.5 percent (14 for 16)

It was...

Fouls: Carlee and Whitney (5)
D-Rob added four herself.

Turnovers: Team (17)
Aaryn had 5, Whitney had 4, uggggh

Final: Those Big 12 traitors 73, OUverrated 68.

We don't deserve to be ranked #15 after that performance. Look for Sherri to double whatever she made them do after the UConn loss. We haven't lost to a Big 12 North team since 2005, no joke. Got something to add, Sherri?

A young, building program with nothing to lose here . . . we just kind of messed around like we thought (CU) would go away. We were ahead and we think they are going to go away, but they didn't. They kept making plays and I give them credit. They played like the hungrier basketball team.

NP and I were at the game yesterday. A wonderful crowd, a really competitive game (we also saw the KU mens game the day before at LNC and the first six innings of the Oakland beatdown - we left when it was 17-nil) and I think we all felt robbed at the end when the game-winning shot rolled around forever and rimmed out.

Scoring Sooner: Vegas and D-Rob (25 each)
They were both virtually unstoppable all night. Barring a sophomore slump next season, you can pretty much assume Aaryn is Danielle's heir apparent.

Rebounding machine: Carlee (11)
She also had 11 points, giving her a double-double.

FREE throws: Team (20 for 22)
With a few Griner early jumps, we were able to maintain perfection till late in the game.

The reasons we lost:

Guarding the 3: Baylor had many open looks at the 3-line, with the double-team effort on Griner. They shot 48 percent, 13 of 27.

Missing the 3: We also had some good looks that just didn't fall, 3 of 13 overall, starting about 0 for 7 if I recall correctly.

Best moments of the game:

Sulky Mulkey's Technical: Don't pay attention to the box score on SS.com, there WAS a technical last night and it was glorious. Mulkey was T'd up after getting over-animated the entire game. It was almost more fun to watch her reaction to every non-call and call in our favor that the actual game at some points, and the refs finally had enough.

Griner's frustration: You know how I said we were double teaming Britney a lot? She finally had enough at one point and locked up with one of our players, throwing them backward (but she ended up on the ground too). TWEET! Offensive foul. This is what finally sent Mulkey over the edge.

The emergence of Nicole Griffin: Look which freshman earned a starting spot? She was part of the pizz-off-Griner gameplan that almost worked. Nicole will be better than Griner if this keeps up, even if she can't dunk.

Carlee: I heard Big Ben was in the crowd somewhere last night, but regardless, she played extremely hard last night till she fouled out. She might not put up the stats her teammates do most nights, but she really really runs and kept us in the game early-on.

Sherri Coale's hugs: Pregame to D-Rob for her scoring 2,000 points, after Nicole fouled out, after Carlee fouled out, and her words of encouragement to the crowd and team postgame. Sherri was clearly frustrated with the non-foul call and the shot not dropping at the end, but she kept her poise and still found something good to say to the thousands in attendance.

You can view highlights on SS.com here. (warning: also includes baylor highlights)

“Well we’re getting better and I’ve said all year we’re very young, we’re a work in progress. We continue to learn and get better and show resilience and that’s what’s most important in late February. Are you still improving or are you the same team you were in mid-January? I think we’re getting better, were getting more balance, were competing together as Carlee (Roethlisberger) alluded. I think with this one you take the sting and you take it out on whoever or whatever is in your path. This one is not easy to swallow.”

What did she say to the crowd in her post game remarks?

She said that she loved the crowd's effort and she loved that Danielle was willing to step up and take the final shot. Both statements got huge ovations from the crowd. The guy that was interviewing her (was it Billy Tubbs? Not sure) was all kind of like "Hey hey, D-Rob probably got fouled on that last shot, didn't she?" I don't think Coale appreciated that statement, because she didn't address the reffage that was going on last night. Speaking of football players in attendance, Griner looked like she threw a block in the back on that play.

You know how you can tell when someone is walking angry from behind by the way their hair moves? Coale was definitely stomping angrily to the back in her stilettos, perhaps to find where the zebras went. She kept her poise for the postgame handshakes and the postgame interview, but after she was outta sight... you just know. :(

Another heartbreaking loss. Just... heartbreaking.

I know, that's why I don't think she liked the question :) she was cordial, but very upset at that point, but probably not at Billy (or whoever the interviewer was), but at the end of the game.

I was very surprised that Morgan's first playing time of the game was... in-bounding the ball with 8-ish left. I know she's had good endgame moments though, but I wished she had played earlier. We might have had a chance of making more 3's then. :(

We saw bri at halftime or something next to the north basket. Didn't look like you had the energy for flag football :D I imagine they had you running around a lot for that game.

Really, really sad about this one. I can talk about calls, but for the most part the officials were okay. I don't think we got any 50/50 calls and that hurt, but what killed us were breakdowns in the first half and a killer night by #0.

Griner struggled with fundamentals and I was very impressed with our girls' ability to confuse and frustrate her in the paint on both ends. Skeletor needs to work on her coaching before she complains to the refs. The guards had no idea what to do with their star being stuffed down low, and they're lucky that what'sherface shot 75% from downtown no matter how open she was.

Hey, it's SENIOR NIGHT!
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_bsi_wide/6273495.jpeg
7 p.m. tonight on KAUT Ch. 43 in OKC, COX Ch. 74 in Tulsa and ESPN Full Court PPV according to SS.com.

How bad are the Cowgirls this year without Andrea Riley? Terri-bad. Only three conference wins so far. We will of course start all of our seniors... and it looks like the plan is to match them up with two froshies, Vegas and Nicole Griffin... nickname TBD. Yup, Whitney's giving up her starter spot to Lauren. but hey, that's Senior Night.

Preview on SS.com here (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/030111aaa.html) and another preview at the Tulsa World here (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20110302_92_B1_CUTLIN922258&allcom=1). A review of D-Rob's OU career on NewsOK here (http://newsok.com/robinson-leaves-her-mark-at-ou/article/3545207) and another on Norman Transcript here (http://normantranscript.com/sports/x1422724960/Robinson-has-built-quite-a-legacy-as-one-of-Sooners-all-time-best). Around the media wire, OUDaily.com has a cute history lesson on the program under Sherri here. (http://www.oudaily.com/news/2011/mar/01/built-ground/)

If you only have time for one, check out the student newspaper's history lesson. Has some fun quotes... like this!

“The program had no pride, no self-expectancy, no championship behavior...And certainly no fans.”

At times like this when we can't seem to beat any legit opponents on home court or away, it's tempting to become a huge OU baseball fan or look forward to football season or something. But if you find yourself wavering, remember how long Sherri's worked to build this program and how hard our players have fought despite some talent discrepancies this year... despite that, we still have the chance to make a deep run in both the Big 12 tourney and NCAA's. Don't give up on this team!

...and for negative reinforcement motives, just remember how awesome the men's team was a few years ago and how much we'd be begging to have that team back now. No, it didn't win Big 12 or national titles, but it WON. And don't EVER take that for granted when you have a team that wins. :(

If it wasn't obvious to all of you last night, team chemistry seems to be at an all-time high (or they're all really good actresses). Coach Coale seemed to be having fun, the team seemed to be having fun and all seemed happy for the seniors. While this year won't be a Big 12 title year (we are likely going to be the 3-seed in the Big 12 tourney), chemistry alone may push this team to the Big 12 tourney title and deep into the NCAA's. We are moving the ball better than ever, our freshmen are contributing and our seniors are leading. It is just... amazing. (although I admit that teams like Pokette can make you look better than usual)

Scoring Sooner: Vegas (23)
Way to spoil Senior Night, hotshot froshie. Nah, just kidding. Keep up the good work. Honorable mention Carlee ROFL with 14.

Rebounding machine: D-Rob (9)
Seriously, D-Rob was our leading rebounder. Honorable mention once again to ROFL with 7 (Whitney also had 7).

Whitney's shot: Team (14 of 28)
Lauren shot 2 of 2. Vegas shot 5 of 10. ROFL shot 3 of 7. Whitney shot 3 of 6. Morgan 1 of 3. Oh man, Pokette had NO chance with this stat in mind.

Questions leading into Big 12 tourney:

Why are our leading rebounders our shorter players? Nicole Griffin recorded a single rebound last night. Lyndsey Cloman, who has seen increased time in the post, recorded 2 last night. Hmmm...

Where's Whitney? Rebounding, playing defense but not scoring as much as we're all used to. I might have to re-name the three-point honor soon?

Is Nicole Griffin really a freshman? Or did she morph overnight into a menace in the post on defense for tall and speedy Sooner foes trying to get easy shots in the paint?

Is Vegas the second coming of D-Rob? No, she'll be better. D-Rob doesn't have a three-point shot.

Where's Morgan? Biding her time till we need last second drives to the basket or three shooting. Le Tre will be back in the rotation sooner than you think.

What about Jaz? I expect Hartman to break outta her shell next year, similar to what Nyeshia Stevenson did between her junior and senior years, where Ny went from an occasional contributor to a solid starter and contributor.

Are we going back to the Final Four? Cautiously optimistic, depends on who we draw in our bracket. We were lucky to watch Nebbish fall early last year. We might catch a break this time around as well.

And now, as always, Sherri Coale:

I’m happy with our leadership tonight, especially the fact that Lauren Willis got in and hit the deep 3 of the night and did a great job of what she does which is get up, shoot 3’s and make them. I thought Carlee (Roethlisberger) got us started early and Danielle (Robinson) really controlled the tempo of the game. Just a really great night for all three of the seniors.”

Player of the Game: Carlee "ROFL" Roethlisberger
http://i56.tinypic.com/cupgp.png
This honor SHOULD have been her's if we had won the Baylor game. She plays so hard and has contributed so much to this team this year, even if the stat lines usually favor other players overall. The double-double last game and 14/7 points and rebounds last night means I can't put it off anymore - ROFL = Player of the Game. Congrats to all of our seniors!

The senior sig line was apparently unlucky, so I have taken the liberty of changing it before we go down in the tourney cuz of it.

56-61

I mean, that sig line can be the only explanation for why only freshmen could score in double figures against... Tech. TECH! Argh. Bounce back in the tourney, girls. No more reality check losses are allowed.

Scoring Sooner: Vegas (16)
Vegas had 14 in the first half, so a very honorable mention to the only other Sooner in double figures, the rising star that's come so far, Nicole Griffin (14).

Sharing Sooner and Rebounding machine: Whitney (12 rebounds, 7 assists)
When Whitney doesn't score, she lights up the stat board in other ways. She was also perfect from the free throw line.

Now that the only highlights of the loss are outta the way...

Turnovers suck: Team (19)
Let's not blame anyone. When an errant pass lands out of bounds or in the other team's hands, it's because people are in the wrong place or didn't make enough of an effort to get to the ball... sometimes.

Free throws suck: Team (61 percent)
I know Texas Tech has an intimidating and impolite crowd and all, but it's hard to miss that many uncontested shots :(

Three pointers suck: Team (28 percent)
Are we going to be a team that lives and dies by the three pointer? When you only make 5 of 18, can't you find other ways to score?

Usually this is where I turn the entry over to Sherri Coale... but let's let Nicole talk, shall we?

"We know what we need to work on. We need to value the basketball a lot more. We just couldn't make our shots. We played hard the whole game, we just need to make shots and value the basketball."

It will take the entire team to go anywhere in the Big 12 tourney, let alone the NCAA tourney... so new sig line.

It is moments like this photo right here that I love this team even more:
http://www.tulsaworld.com/articleimages/2011/20110310_handb8.jpg

But dang it girls, did you have to cut that game so close?!

71-69

When we were down two at the half, NP decided that he couldn't take anymore... we finally broke out Pokemon White/Black. Will have to remember this come tourney-time: If an opponent that is undersized and undertalented intimidates you and outperforms you in a single-elimination tournament... pocket monster time!

I can't believe I just admitted to that. Regardless, I watched the entire game and saw some stuff that just really... worries me going further into the postseason. Most notably, Whitney Hand. Missed shots, turnovers, I really hope she was just having a bad game and takes out any lingering frustration on the Lady Aggies.

And... Nicole Griffin in a stringbean with no strength. She just couldn't grab the rebounds and passes like Joanna did. But... Nicole's 6'6" and Joanna's 6'3". Anyway we could get Joanna taller or Nicole stronger?

Finally... foul trouble. By the end of the second half, D-Rob and ROFL are over on the bench while Tech is making it more of a game than it should be. It will probably be just as bad against the likes of A&M. I fear the worst, but hope for the best. the OU/A&M womens games are usually the worst-reffed games of the year.

Scoring Sooner: D-Rob (19)
A very honorable mention to Carlee "ROFL" Roethlisberger, who added... 18! Holy cow, is she coming alive during her final games, or what?!

Rebounding machine: Nicole (11)
Again, I feel like she could have doubled this number just by wearing football receiver gloves because they were constantly stealing the ball away in the post. Still... we finally have a good rebounding presence in the post and that's a relief. Whitney Hand added a respectable 8.

Sharing Sooner: Whitney (7)
If she's not scoring herself, at least she's getting others to score.

Ball thief: Vegas (3)
One near the end of the game nearly caused a heart-attack - with only a few seconds to go, Vegas steals the ball, has an uncontested layup to put us up by 4.... and MISSES?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!?!

And now...

This is no longer Whitney's shot... or anyone else's: Team (5 of 19)
Vegas (1 of 7), D-Rob (0 of 1), Whitney (0 of 3). Hook and ROFL both made two each, at least.

Overall shooting: Team (38 percent)
let's just say that it was very, very poor night for shooting :(

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_flash_video_photo/6310632.jpeg
Player of the Game: Nicole Griffin
For her double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds). And because she has been improving really fast even as competition gets a lot tougher. Can you imagine her going up against some of our pre-conference opponents?!

Sherri, what propels someone who loves your sport to want to play Pokemon?

I thought there were a few late where we tried to hand it to them, and they said no, you keep it. And we said no, here. And nobody really wanted to win. Probably a sign of two teams wanting to win so badly they got in their own way.

Please, please let this not happen again against A&M... Whitney have anything to say?

I'm so thankful to be playing, especially with these girls the last year. They're my best friends. I'm going to cry.

So really, I should feel terrible for pointing out that Whitney isn't scoring as much as she used to, shouldn't I Sherri?

She's one of
the toughest competitors and toughest kids you'll
ever meet. There's been no sympathy. She
doesn't look for outs. She doesn't whine. She
doesn't complain. None of us has any idea how
much pain she's actually enduring, but I can
guarantee you, it's quite a bit.
She's half, maybe 60% might be a stretch
in terms of her physical well being, yet she's
impacting the game with eight rebounds and I don't
know, 7 assists. I think that the really important
part of that, that people don't understand, maybe
nobody can really understand except competitive
athletes who have been injured, is how hard it is to
still contribute knowing what you used to do or
what you are capable of doing but can't do now.
It's not just a physical limitation, it becomes a
mental limitation. And Whitney has been tough
enough to fight through that and decide you know
what, I can't do what I used to do. But I can do
something, and I've got to do that something as
well as I can.

Really, the entire postgame transcript is a good read. Check it out here. (http://www.big12sports.com/fls/10410/championships/2011hoops/w-okla-gm8-Quotes.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=10410)

So it's been awhile since I've Tandy'd things up on a television connected to a box of keyboard, but I imagine that's about what it'd look like. We, the Sooners, and never the Lady Sooners, face the first of our silly-named Big 12 foes this week, the Lady Raiders. We may later faceoff against the Lady Cyclones, or the Lady Aggies or the Lady Bears, but we, the Sooners, will always just be the Sooners, regardless of the sport, regardless of the gender.

Now beat the ladies of the Big 12, Sooner! :D

Badger, that takes me back to when my kids were in elementary school! We had a Tandy Color Computer and I modified a program we found in a book to help my daughter study for her spelling tests!

I get the feeling it was a "Dewey Wins" kind of thing - someone fully expected Tech to win and had the page layout already done. It is the same article as the "Tech 69, Oklahoma 71" listed in the Headlines, which leads me to the same conclusion. When have you ever seen a national (i.e. non-home) score list the loser first?

Someday I'm gonna start a television network just to broadcast the Oklahoma-Texas A&M womens basketball games, and I'm gonna call it SFRN, the s----- f------ reffing network.

At SFRN, the only reffing you will see is s--- tier. It will be ----ing ----ty. And it will be a network. And we won't broadcast St. John's/Rutgers games, because that reffing would not be down to our ----ty ----ing reffing standards.

If Sherri's ever been closer to getting T'd up (she got a warning from Kantner), I don't remember it. Should tell you something. There was another camera shot of her later in the game & she was still shooting daggers at one of the other refs. Me & the wife looked at each other & said boy, is she P****D OFF. I would say that I'd love to be a fly on her office wall tomorrow since she won't say anything in public, but I'm afraid that the paint would melt off the walls under my feet.

The only 2 OU fouls that I remember I really had a problem with were a charge on Vegas in which Adams clearly got under her after she'd left the ground on a layup attempt, & a moving screen that on Griffin that would've been a good call, had she actually screened anyone (no offense to NG, but it was a very feeble attempt) The discrepancy was on the other end. A&M got called for about half of the fouls that they committed (i.e. Adams bulling Griffin over repeatedly w/ NG doing her best to hold her ground & still being sent flying, or Vegas getting to a loose ball first, then an A&M player sending her flying into Kantner, & all 3 go flying into the crowd w/ no foul called).

I was surprised they gave the ball to us on that play. If you're going to ignore the foul, why not ignore who touched the ball last?

aTm was killing us on the boards.I can't wondering why OU did not counter by having some combination of Cloman- Griffin or Griffin-McFarland or Cloman-McFarland in the game together. The only thing I can think is that a twin tower set would not be good against the press. Not bad when an offseason means a third place conference finish and a berth in the NCAA.Am I the only one who recalls just making THE DANCE as a big deal.

From OH BOY WE MADE THE DANCE to 306 wins and THREE Final Fours in the last 12 years is quite a change. I wonder If Joe C. will offer Sherri a lifetime contract? If not he should.

I made it through the first 15 seconds of that video before I was all like "Kim is bat---- crazy" and turned it off. Sherri has had her moments of uncontrolled emotion, but those moments are not going "WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at the press or demanding to know who didn't vote for one of her players on a team that doesn't even matter outside the conference. Sherri's emotional moments are giving hugs to players (and after winning her Final Four game over Duke, she gave a commentator a hug during the halftime of the next game) or getting misty eyed when talking about her players. That's it.

As for Gary Blair, Sherri seems to have no problem with him (and no problem with Kim either, for that matter), it's just that his style of coaching results in overly aggressive teams, which means I never look forward to A&M matchups in womens basketball... I worry who's gonna go down with an injury or how many foul calls I'm gonna endure through a futile effort by the refs to keep the game in check.

We are a six-seed, which I think is the lowest we've been since my senior year at OU, 2005 (when we were gifted an 8-seed, hehe). We will not be hosting the first few rounds for once... will be interesting to see how that works out.

Our second round foe will likely be Miami (yes, the lady version of the hated Hurricanes) which is our area's 3-seed.

I will be back later to give my fearless predictions on the Big 12 teams... I actually got three right last year :D

Sooner95
3/14/2011, 07:31 PM
6 seed is about what I was figureing we'd get. Our record looks average, but our schedule was daunting this year. I think this will pay off during the tourney.

Matchup against Miami should be a good one. And barring we get further, I'd rather take my chances with the likes of ND and Tenn than Uconn.

I am going to miss this group of girls:
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_bsi_wide/6331289.jpeg

But, before I miss them, they have to be gone first, and while the road will be tough (likely Miami, Notre Dame and Tennessee en route, with James Madison's Federalist Papers up first away from home in the first round), they're Sooners, so I have confidence in them :)

So, let's break down the Big 12 bids, shall we?

Texas (8-seed, Dayton region)
It amazes me that this program can be so underwhelming every year... and are in the tourney every year... and this time, they're away from home. They are one of the few I predicted correctly last year and I have confidence in ONCE AGAIN picking them to do the EXACT. SAME. THING.

Prediction: Out in First Round, for like the billionth year in a row Hook em

Kansas State (8-seed, Philly region)
Congrats on making it back into the tournament. The bad news is that even if you make it past Purdue, your reward will be UConn in round two. Sorry.

Prediction: Second round ouster

Texas Tech (8-seed, Spokane region)
Like KSU, you are doomed in round two (likely Satanford) if you are not doomed in round one (St. John's). What the heck, here's the benefit of the doubt for you too.

Prediction: Second round ouster

Iowa State (7-seed, Philly region)
I loved meeting the Marist fans back in Tempe in 04, and they have a solid program going there. ISU meets them in round one... and while upsets in the women's bracket are rare... what the hell.

Prediction: First round ouster by Marist

Oklahoma (6-seed, Dayton region)
I think 6-seed is the lowest we've been since our 8-seed (first round ouster) in 2005. But dang it, we can compete with anybody! We have trouble finishing opponents off, but we have the ability!

Prediction: Sweet 16 loss to stupid Notre Dame

Texas A&M (2-seed in Dallas region)
I giggled when I saw their draw. Sure, it's Dallas and perhaps they'd have a few fans in town if they made it to the last few regional rounds, gotta take out FSU and Rutgers en route, but the Elite Eight matchup is what makes me laugh.

Prediction: Final Four, ousted by Satanford

Baylor (1-seed in Dallas region)
Yes, the Lady Bears and Lady Aggies are in the same region. As such, Skeletor will scream, Behemoth will foul out early and the Lady Aggies will punch their way to victory, leaving Baylor fans speechless and sending A&M to its first Final Four. ESPN will cry, as their hyped female dunker will not be giving them any ratings boost.

Prediction: Elite Eight, ousted by Texas A&M

My predictions are likely going to be wrong, so I'll make one more: UConn does not win the title. They having injury and depth issues that will kill them if they get into foul trouble and Coach Geno is already whining about it. (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/tournament/2011/news/story?id=6197975) Geez man, stop whining! You've won like a billion titles in a row!

In your face, Federalist Papers.
86-72

I was outta town the past week or so, but you can see a replay of all first round games (and second round also) on ESPN3.com. If you're an Xboxer, the right trigger is the fast forward if you wanna get through the breaks faster and get sick of the Matty Ice ads.

So I finally got to watch the Sooner women win like we all knew they could, but just haven't been doing much of lately thanks to tougher Big 12 foes. Good old James Madison to the rescue. Yes, they put up a fight (and many JMU fans in attendance, as they were very close to home, like an hour away I think), but not enough of one to really scare anyone like those pesky Lady Canes... but more on that game later.

Scoring Sooner: Whitney Hand! (24 points)
D-Rob was second with 19 points, Vegas added 17 herself. Whitney ****ing Hand pwns all you tourney foes because she missed out on last year's Final Four, so just step aside, beyonces. She's gonna score :P

Rebounding machine: Joanna McFarland (15)
The return of "Four Foul" McFarland and what timing! Her offensive rebounding gave us valuable second-chance shots in this game and the next game... spoiler alert, hehe. And if ESPN commentators are to be believed, half her rebounds were in the final six minutes of the game, when JMU really tried to get back into the game. Carlee added a very respectable 9.

Sharing Sooner: D-Rob (6)
Assists might just be the thing that keeps us close against opponents that might have more talent or depth than us... so long as they don't turn into turnovers.

Whitney's NEW shot: Team (20 of 23 from the line)
If we aren't making 3's, at least we're making free's. Whitney (6 for 8), ROFL (4 of 4), D-Rob (5 of 5) Joanna (4 of 4), they're all contributing.

And now...

Terribad turnovers: Team (22)
How in the blue hell did we win the game when we committed so many turnovers? Well, because it was James Madison, no offense to the Federalists reading :P

Three Throw: Team (4 of 16)
What REALLY sank the Lady Dukes (yes, that's JMU's mascot, the Dukes) was even though our 3 shooting was abysmal, their's was far worse: 2 of 25. So, while we sucked, they sucked far more.

Player of the game: Whitney Hand
http://i53.tinypic.com/28cho5v.jpg
There were many, many great performances, but I think we all are just in awe of Whitney Hand's comeback from injury. And... yeah, this is also because of her outstanding performance in the next game too. So, I promise to choose someone else for the next game. What's she's done despite not being able to do shooting drills before games and many practice drills... yeah, she's awesome. Way to go Whitney!

Later today... the second round recap. But first, as always, a Sherri Coale quote:

Whitney is our rudder, she really is. She calms the sea and she directs us. The thing I think about Whitney is
that she is not physically able to do the things that she has been able to do in the past, before the knee injury.
But she has found different and rather unique ways to score. It’s not always very pretty. She and I made eye
contact after one of her shots tonight, and we both kind of laughed. She fumbled and bumbled and fell, and
made a layup in traffic, which is not what would have defined her freshman year. This is going to be a real
positive thing that she figures out. She will do well, and her knee will get better. She will have a nice array of
weapons as a result of that. [Aaryn Ellenberg] scores and that’s great, but [Whitney Hand] is our rudder. If
[Danielle Robinson] has to come off the floor, [Whitney Hand] has to be on the floor. Whitney practiced more
this week than she has all year. It wasn’t a decision. All year Carolyn, our trainer, would come up and say,
‘What’s on the practice schedule today? She can do this, she can’t do that.’ Some days after games I would say,
‘I don’t even want her to put her game shoes on, she is on the side. She played 39 minutes last night, we need
her tomorrow, so nothing today.’ That happened our entire conference season, January and February. This
week nobody said a thing. Maybe Carolyn, our trainer, and Whitney had a conversation, I don’t know. I didn’t
have any conversations. We had the toughest stretch of practice that we’ve had all year. Two days into it, I
looked at my coaches and said, ‘Whitney is going every single possession. Okay.’ And we just let her go. I’m
sure she’s thinking, ‘It’s the NCAA Tournament. I’ve got to play.’ Her knee may suffer from it, in terms of
pain and such. But Whitney knows that she needs to be her best right now, and she wasn’t going to miss a rep.
Maybe that has something to do with her comfort level, but I know that Whitney is a player who is defined by
her work ethic. She needs to work, that’s where she gets her confidence.

Boomer! :D

Ah, nothing like beating college sports' resident thug school.

88-83

We started really slow, then shot them silly even as our players were taking increasing painful looking tumbles to the ground. Looking at just the box score, you'd see that we had a nine-point halftime lead... it should have been more, but foul trouble on both teams kept some of our players out. I wish I could give daily shoutouts to Danielle "D-Rob" Robinson for leading our crazy fast, pass happy, point mad offense, then snatching the ball and taking charges on the other end. If only, if only, she didn't get so many fouls called on her in the process :(

I also wish I could give tons more kudos to Carlee "ROFL" Roethlisberger because even when the box score doesn't show it (and sometimes like this game, it does), she really contributes a lot of both ends of the court, as her teammates usually rack up even more flashy stats around her. Both of our senior starters mean so much to the success of this team... and even though I predicted them to go down to Domer in the next round... I would really like to be wrong so I can watch them play a few more games in Sooner jerseys.

Scoring Sooner: Whitney Hand (27 points)
She dates the Stache, she once again leads our team in scoring, beating her previous best (of 24, which she had in the first round) and she is an absolute... machine. How in the heck does she keep taking all of this abuse, then beg Sherri to let her back in the game after limping off the court?!?! D-Rob added 19, ROFL added 14, and Vegas, the froshie overachiever, had 13.

Rebounding machine: Joanna McFarland (15)
Speaking of machines... FIFTEEN AGAIN? Run, JMc! I don't even think she started either game! Nice stat by ESPN shown during the game: the only 4.0 GPA in the Big 12. :D

Sharing Sooner: D-Rob (11)
If there was ever a night we needed so many overachievers in every category out there to contribute, this was it. ROFL and Whitney added 5 and 4 respectively.

Ball thief: D-Rob (4)
Some of those steals were just laugh out loud funny. If you have the means, watch the replay on ESPN3. Miami was absolutely disgusted with D-Rob most of the night :D

All your shots are belong to Whitney: Team (11-29 from three, 19-22 from free)
We shot 50 percent from 3 in the second half. We shot free throws perfectly in the first half. They just couldn't contain our awesome shooting. Haha, Miami.

Player of the game: Joanna McFarland
http://i56.tinypic.com/2vmwrjn.jpg
"Four Foul" was her froshie nickname. Till further notice, Run JMc, because even though she lost her starting spot to our incredibly tall and talented freshman center Nicole Griffin, the only 4.0 GPA in the Big 12 (thanks for that, ESPN... while you're at it, tell the audience that it's not a phony major either but ****ing BIOCHEMISTRY that she's acing!) she has continued to work hard and help her team where she could... and a double-double against Miami too. 12 points and 15 rebounds! If she keeps this up, Sherri's gonna have to find a way to play both Nicole and JMc at the same time... it'll be like the Paris twins' senior year all over again... no easy buckets, opposing team! Ha!

Speaking of Sherri, I bet she has a quote for you all:

I could see her just almost physically
busting through the barrier that she’d built for herself. She’s a perfectionist, a 4.0 student, she wants to do
everything right. She wants to please me all the time. She has just kind of figured out not to worry so
much about it being just right, but making a play. I tell you there’s nothing better than watching a kid find
a way out of that, because if they can do that, they can do anything. We’re a better team for it; we’re a
deeper team.

Two games, two amazing stat lines for Whitney and Joanna. Way to go you two. And now, to honor everyone else:

Carlee and D-Rob, for being senior leaders every game that keep propelling us to wins when we need them the most.

Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg, Mogan "Le Tre" Hook, and Nicole "Nickname TBD" Griffin, for being overachieving freshmen making positive and meaningful contributions to one of the best programs in the country,

and to everyone else on the team for contributing where they can, when they can, in consecutive deep tourney runs at the University of Oklahoma.

BOOMER!!!!!!!

Beat Domer.

We go from the Convicts to the Catholics and these guys definitely have our number after we ended their season last year... in overtime. Click here (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/032810aaa.html) to read SS.com's take on the game last season. Here's an excerpt:

Nyeshia Stevenson hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 4.4 seconds left in overtime and third-seeded Oklahoma knocked off second-seeded Notre Dame 77-72 on Sunday night to reach the regional finals for the second year in a row and the third time in school history.

"I don't get speechless very often," Coale said. "But I can't think of anything better to say than I'm just really, really proud of these kids."

Stevenson had 21 points and Abi Olajuwon added 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Sooners (26-10), who lost to Notre Dame in overtime in the second round in 2008.

So yes, not only have we met them in two of the past three seasons, IN THE TOURNAMENT, both games went to overtime and both of us have ended each other's seasons in two of the past three years.

So to say this game is kind of important... well, it's not just about making the Elite Eight or about revenging a certain 47-game streak.

Alas, we are not favored by any stretch of the imagination. Notre Dame is a top ten team with very good players. So, it will take amazing performances like we saw from Whitney Hand and Run JMc in the first few rounds, but EVERYONE must contribute... a lot. As the Waterboy movie reiterates - "Last game of the season. Can't hold anything back!" (potentially last game, of course).

I am also deeply concerned with the way some of our players have been taking hits lately, like this is football or something... but, they keep getting back up. If Thug U couldn't take out Whitney Hand, nobody can :)

Keys to victory!

Scoring: Duh. We have been tons better from the line (and getting to the line) lately than when our season started, but our three-point shot has been a lot less consistent. We had an off-night in round one and a better night in round two... I hope we don't revert back to round one, because unlike James Madison, ND is not going to go 2 for 25 from behind the arch.

Rebounding: This is an area that we can definitely beat the Domers, as have some size advantages in the projected starting lineups. What will really help is offensive rebounding, because second chance shots really put us over the top if the first two games.

Assists over turnovers: Sometimes we get a little bit too excited and try to pass faster, run faster and shoot faster and lose the ball in the process. ND is not a team that lets you get away with that type of stuff.

Foul trouble: Especially with D-Rob, our starters cannot get baited into silly fouls. Yes, steals are good, as are taking charges, but don't take too many chances, or you're gonna be on the bench a lot. If ND gets a big first half lead... this will really suck.

Finish the second half strong: We used to have so-so first halves and big finishes, but lately, we've been blowing leads and letting teams get back into games.

As my sig will remind you from now till Saturday, the game is scheduled to start at 1:30...ish. I think there's an earlier game that might delay the start of this one. If ESPN gives you issues again, get to a radio if you're in OKC or to ESPN3.com if you have the means (you need to be a subscriber to cable providers that allow ESPN3 access, like COX, for example).

Once again, BEAT DOMER! And...

A very good season and good career for the senior class -- Two Final Fours, a Sweet 16 and a second round in their fours years, and a Big 12 regular season championship in 09.

Now that our season's over, as I've done for the past few years, I'm gonna issue season-end grades and then, tally up every Player of the Game award (issued for wins only) and issue Player of the Year. But... need some recovery time, both from illness and from this game, so I'll either be back Sunday or Monday to do that.

Boomer Sooner anyway, girls. Thanks for a memorable year.

Many thanks to the seniors on this team - Danielle Robinson, Carlee Roethlisberger and Lauren Willis. It has been a great joy for me and the other OU fans watching you play over the last several years. God bless and God speed in pursuing your career.

Now, it is up to Baylor or Texas A&M to carry the Big XII banner and win the national championship. It is a travesty that both are in the same regional. Of course, I am rooting for Baylor.

Uggh ! That was painful to watch. D Rob couldn't even make a layup and she had no other offensive help. No rebounding. No 3 pointers. Just sloppy at both ends.

Thanks for the memories D Rob.

The woman has absolutely NO class! After today's game against Wisconsin-Green Bay, Mulkey showed her rear yet again, in gloating over the win. In her postgame comments, she said words to this effect: "(The opposing team/coach) said that they were going to play Griner straight up. That didn't work too well, did it?" [SMUG GRIN] (Griner scored 40 points). Perhaps realizing that she was being once again classless, she then praised the Green Bay team for their tenacity in whittling a 20 point lead to a 9 point final margin, even though the outcome of the game was not in question for the last 3 or 4 minutes.

I don't often root for UCONN, or Texas A&M, but I'll be rooting for both of them!

"THAT's what I think of Notre Dame!"

That was me making light of the 25 point facial during/after the game... and my illness, hehe.

I'll try to get to the first part of wrapping up these year's blog tonight, not sure if I'll start with the season summary or the player grades. I started to count "player of game" awards earlier today, only to realize just how... generous... fair... nice... I was. I think we all know who the player of the year should be, but will the usual way get to the same conclusion? We'll see...

To ensure no grade inflation, I don't peek at previous years' grades before determining this year's. The only grades I remember from previous years was Whitney Hand's, because I keep giving her A+ grades. I think I might have to for a third year in a row :O

Anyway, I promise I'll get to this soon, then I'll jump in even more of the Capel replacement rumor threads :)

Basically, Sulkey called out all the media people who voted for D-Rob for all-tournament in the Big 12 event, over some Baylor player, instead of taking the opportunity to revel in a league tourney title. That was the epitome of no-class, in my book.

Now that Skeletor is out, who do we root for now? I'd have rooted for UConn against Baylor, and I can't stand them either.

I do imagine that one can count the number of OU women's basketball fans who rooted for Baylor, on one hand. The D-Rob thing was just the latest, but most emphatic, reason for that.

(the only two Mulkey fans on any OU board I've ever seen are on the same board - one invokes the name of Billy Tubbs and his alleged misdeeds in the mid-80's, and the other just thinks Kimmy walks on water and defends her to the hilt)

Ladies and gentlemen, it's finally time for...

SEASON-END GRADES

Previous season grades can be seen here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130522) (2008-09) or here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137583&page=23) (2009-10). There is absolutely no curve. Stats are only for this season, as are awards. I don't peek at previous season's grades before issuing this year's grade. There's nothing official or scientific about these grades - they're just a tribute to our Sweet 16 year and the players that got us there.

And in case you're wondering how it started - someone gave the men's team grades after the Elite Eight a few years ago, so I posted some grades for the women's team :)

In jersey score order!

#3 Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg (5-7 freshman guard from Las Vegas, NV)
Grade: A-

Achievements unlocked: OU record 94 three's in a single season, All-Big 12 freshman team, All-Big 12 honorable mention, four-time Big 12 player of the week, froshie in starting lineup (33 games)
Stats: 16.2 PPG (35 games played), 3.3 RPG, 39% 3PT, 81% FT, 39% FG
Overall: This is how Sherri probably hopes all of her recruits start their OU careers. She is like D-Rob with a three-point shot, but must improve her ball handling and driving ability to replace D-Rob at the point next season. However, there is very little doubt that "Vegas" will continue to be a starter next season.

#4 Nicole Griffin (6-6 freshman center from Milwaukee, WI)
Grade: B

Achievements unlocked: Froshie in starting lineup (12 games), double-double (March 5)
Stats: 5.7 PPG (30 games played), 3.7 RPG, 67% FG, 57% FT
Overall: A very promising start to a freshman that broke into the starting lineup late in the season. Alas, she will need to get stronger to compete with some of the Big 12's elite post teams. Barring an injury or sophomore slump, definitely a starter next year with a lot of room - and time - to improve before her OU career is over.

#10 Carlee "ROFL" Roethlisberger (6-1 senior forward from, Findlay, Ohio)
Grade: B+ (Previous seasons: C+ in 09-10, C in 08-09)

Achievements unlocked: Starter (all 35 games), double-double (Dec. 5, Feb. 27 and March 22), academic All-Big 12
Stats: 6.9 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 31% 3PT, 38% FG, 72% FT
Overall: After wondering for a few seasons if she was only recruited to our high tier program for her name, Carlee showed what a workhorse she was her senior year, getting all three of her double-doubles against top tier opponents (tOSU, Baylor, Miami). We'll miss her, but not ESPN endlessly reminding us who her brother is.

#12 Jelina Cerina (6-5 junior center from Serbia)
Grade: C-

Stats: 2.2 PPG (20 games played), 2.3 RPG, 52% FT, 46% FG
Overall: Rarely saw time her first season after transferring in from nearby juco North Oklahoma A&M, but showed promise during foul-trouble games with her post presence as far as rebounding and getting quick, short shots up.

#13 Danielle "D-Rob" Robinson (5-9 senior guard from San Jose, CA)
Grade: A (Previous seasons: A for 09-10, B+ for 09-08)

Achievements unlocked: Starter (all 35 games), double-double (Nov. 13, March 20), Academic All-Big 12, Capital One Academic All-District First Team, Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Finalist, Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, All-Big 12 Championship Team, All-Big 12 Defensive Team, All-Big 12 First Team, Nancy Lieberman Award Finalist, Naismith Trophy Midseason Candidate, Wooden Award Ballot Candidate, AP All-America Second Team, State Farm Coaches' All-America Honorable Mention
Stats: 18.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 88% FT, 46 % FG, 28% 3PT
Overall: Her turnovers seemed to be more in check this season even surrounded by more freshmen and less seniors than previous seasons. Her speed and leadership will be incredibly missed.

#14 Lauren Willis (5-11 senior guard from Overland Park, KS)
Grade: B- (Previous years: C in 09-10, inc. in 09-08)

Achievement unlocked: All-Big 12 academic first team
Stats: 2.6 PPG (24 games played), 0.7 RPG, 33% 3PT, 80% FT, 34% FG
Overall: I am not sure why Sherri didn't call on Lauren when teammate's three weren't falling more this season, but for whatever reason, Lauren just didn't play very much this year. It kind of disappointed me as a fan, since she's a senior and a player that had to walk-on to get to OU. In any event, we wish Lauren all the best.

#22 Morgan "Le Tre" Hook (5-10 freshman guard from Lowell, AR)
Grade: B

Achievement unlocked: froshie in starting lineup (2 games)
Stats: 6.6 PPG, 1.2 RPG, 38% 3PT, 60% FT, 39% FG
Overall: After a very strong start to the season that earned her a few starts and the nickname "Le Tre" from me, her treys stopped falling as often when conference play started, but she still had very good dribble-drives for some easy deuces. I look for her to possibly break into the starting lineup next year if she has some strong shooting performances again next year, but her speed leads me to ask: Potential D-Rob replacement to lead the offense???

#25 Whitney Hand (6-1 redshirt sophomore guard from Fort Worth, TX)
Grade: inc (Previous years: A+ in 09-10 and 08-09)

Achievements unlocked: Starter (22 games) Overcoming Jason White-itis, double-double (Jan. 2 return from injury game), All-Big 12 academic first team
Stats: 12.6 PPG (in 23 games), 5.7 RPG, 34% 3PT, 40% FG, 82% FG
Overall: I am giving her the "incomplete" grade that I should have given her last season, because she only played five games last season, yet I made some lame excuse for her getting an A+ still... something about being Sherri-in-training and keeping a positive attitude or something... ANYWAY, I have no idea how she is playing as well as she does after Jason White-itis (ACL tear) and hearing stories of how she's in too much pain to do shooting drills and running drills in practice. All I hope is that she gets 100 percent healed in time for her redshirt junior season, because this team falls apart when she's taking breathers on the bench. As such, definitely a starter next season, barring injury.

#31 Kodi Morrison (5-8 sophomore guard from Seminole, OK)
Grade: inc (Previous season: inc. 09-10)

Stats: 1.4 PPG (in 13 games), 0.6 RPG
Overall: The walk-on once came in during a flustered Sherri moment to show the team that her instructions weren't that complicated. I think it's just an Oklahoma girl thing that only Sherri and Kodi can understand :)

#34 Jacqueline Jeffcoat (6-2 freshman forward-center from Plano, TX)
Grade: inc.

Achievement unlocked: Overcoming mono
Stats: 0.7 PPG (in 13 games), 1.3 RPG
Overall: After a reported case of mononucleosis (if you've ever had it, you know how much is sucks and how difficult it is to recover from), Jaq only showed OU fans glimpses of her athleticism and ability that she stole from untalented, overrated twin who now plays football in Whornland. Here's hoping she gets a medical redshirt for this season and turns into a speedier Amanda Thompson.

#44 Lyndsey Cloman (6-3 sophomore forward-center from San Antonio, TX)
Grade: C+ (Previous season: C)

Achievement unlocked: Starter (2 games)
Stats: 4.3 PPG (in 29 games), 3.0 RPG, 49% FG, 71% FT
Overall: A back injury kept her out of the post season, but she might be our answer to our rebounding and mid-range shooting woes. I definitely expect great things out of Cloman next year, possibly a starter at a hybrid F/C toughness position against those pesky Big 12 foes.

#45 Jasmine Hartman (5-10 junior guard from Houston, TX)
Grade: C+ (Previous years: B- in 09-10, C in 08-09)

Achievement unlocked: Starter (12 games)
Stats: 1.9 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 37% FG, 52% FT
Overall: I'll just admit it -- ever since she arrived in 2008, I expected her to become a dual threat at the point with D-Rob, kind of like a wishbone for basketball or something. Instead, what I've seen is some glaring timeout sessions from Sherri and a lot of benching during her career thus far. Like Ny and Abi discovered upon turning seniors, I hope Jaz no longer is held back by whatever is preventing her from becoming a start on BOTH SIDES (not just defense!) for Oklahoma. You're a senior now, Jaz. Please, PLEASE make it a year to remember.

#53 Joanna "Run JMc" McFarland (6-3 sophomore forward-center from Derby, KS)
Grade: B+ (Previous year: B+)

Achievements unlocked: Genius (4.0 GPA), Capital One Academic All-District Second Team, Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Starter (21 games), double-double (four times)
Stats: 5.3 PPG (in 35 games), 5.2 RPG, 47% FG, 71% FT
Overall: After a frustrating start to her sophomore season, "Four Foul" turned into "Run JMc" by postseason, making us wonder what "ah ha!" moment she had during a mad scientist biochemistry lab session. I think she has the potential to get into the starting lineup, but it really remains to be seen who steps up in the offseason training, injuries, or heaven forbid, a few sophomore slumps in teammates???

Honorable mention for Player of the Year:
Whitney (3 player of game honors), Morgan (3), Joanna (3), Vegas (2), Jaz (2), Carlee (1), Nicole (1), Lauren (1)

With five "Player of the Game" honors this season, an honor bestowed following each win for the greatest performance, the unquestioned leader and player most likely to be missed next season is by far, without question...
http://i51.tinypic.com/11ju0s2.jpg

I will be back once more with season highlights and then finally sign off for the summer onto either more Lon Kruger talk, spring football or perhaps even a bit of WNBA bits here and there (but likely not).

Seasonal recap:

After the usual individual player grades, let's look at the season as a whole:

Best win: NCAA Round 2 vs. Miami, March 22, 88-83.
What made it great: After a lackluster Big 12 tourney, not much was expected out of OU in the tournament. Killer performances by Whitney Hand (scoring) and Joanna McFarland (rebounding) got us past a very talented Miami team.

Worst loss: 86-45 at UConn, Feb. 14
In a year when almightly UConn looks incredibly vulnerable, we make them look like the team before the huge winning streak ended. The Maya Cam.. the national television... the embarrassed Sherri in postgame... it was all-around loss that completely humbled the team and fans.

Heartwarming performance: Whitney Hand returns from injury (at TCU, Jan. 2)
The only thing that would have put this over the top for Whitney Hand bcak in her hometown coming off injury would have been to win the game. 24 points and 11 boards? Well, that's one way to show that you're recovered from an ACL injury.

Heartbreaking news: Player kicked off the team, another suspended
Nothing was publicly divulged as to why, but you hate to see Sherri get pushed to the point to dismiss players, especially ones that just arrived on campus like Alexann Yancey just had. And Christmas scholly recipient Lauren Willis gets suspended on top of that too. It really made you wonder if this season would fall apart before it started.

Reason for optimism: Freshmen contributions, returns from injury/sickness.
Sure, we lose D-Rob, Carlee and Lauren, but in the process of sending off our seniors, we also saw the beginning of Aaryn Ellenberg, Morgan Hook and Nicole Griffin's OU careers, all three of which had some starts as freshmen. Then, we also saw Jacqueline Jeffcoat get over mono and Whitney Hand get over her ACL issues. Next year is going to be great.

Reason for pessimism: At the same time we are getting better, other teams are getting better too. Texas and Tech have older national titles, but now, both Texas A&M and Baylor have recent national titles to recruit against and to be constantly reminded of. These Big 12 rivals aren't going to be getting any weaker anytime soon... unless they are in the defunct north or are named "Oklahoma State" ;)

Player to have breakout season: Jasmine Hartman
We've seen it with Ashley Paris, Abi Olajuwon and Nyeshia Stevenson -- players can go from moderate contributors off the bench to starting stars in their final season at OU. Hartman is due for a breakout year before graduation!

Player to show most offseason improvement: Nicole Griffin
If she could improve that much during a season, imagine how much she'll improve with offseason conditioning, drills and less away game and classwork stress this summer.

Most likely to be captains: Whitney Hand, Jasmine Hartman.
Jaz will be a senior and Whitney already is a captain. If the team votes a third in, I'd have to go with junior f/c Joanna McFarland... if for no other reason than to get her teammates hitting the books more :)

Way too early MVP prediction: Aaryn Ellenberg
No sophomore slumps allowed. Score 30 every night AND run our offense :P

Projected starters: Aaryn, Whitney, Nicole, Jaz, McFarland
I'd say the first three have pretty solid footing. The other two could get replaced by more hotshot incoming froshies or perhaps be switched out depending on opponents.

Today: Is the WNBA draft at 2 p.m. Read more on SS.com's tracking D-Rob's first round status here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/041111aae.html)

The incoming frosh from St Thomas here in KC is pretty good...very quick, very good ball control..and a pass first type of PG...does a lot of driving and no-looks to the 3 land...

This is all at the HS level, she was def the best on the floor most nights. How that translates to Big 12 play we'll see.

She might be a headcase...switched schools for awhile...but her team won state. I know a dad of a player from last yr. He says she was told she'd start...FWIW..

All right, my last entry of the season, before switching to 100 percent spring football, baseball and Lon hugging. Hail, Lon, the savior of OU men's basketball!

I will also attempt a "Sooners in WNBA" thread on the general sports forum again, which alas, is the topic of this final, sad but optimistic entry:

Draft daze

The WNBA is where my beloved Sooners go to vanish, hardly ever to be heard from again, sadly. With D-Rob's San Antonio drafting at #6, she is the highest Sooner drafted into the WNBA since Stacey Dales-Schumann (now sans Schumann) in 2002.

And every season, the Sooner contingent at the pro level stateside is gone.

Phylesha Whaley (2000 third round, Minny Linx)
Epilogue: Proudly serving our country in the U.S. Army as a nurse. God Bless Plylesha and the USA!

Stacey Dales (2002 first round, Wash Mystics)
Epilogue: After some injury issues, dumped those dopes at ESPN who refused to give her equal treatment of her male colleagues and now graces the airwaves of the NFL Network, meaning another Sooner will be in New York on draft day :)

LaNeishea Caufield (2002 first round, Utah Starzz)
Epilogue: Waived by San Antonio Silver Stars in 2003 after the Utah Starzz folded in 2002.

Rosalind Ross (2002 first round, LA Sparks)
Epilogue: The saddest ending of all, was about to return to the OU program when killed by her girlfriend during this past offseason in her hometown, Milwaukee.

Maria Villaroel (2004 third round, Phoenix Mercury)
Epilogue: Waived by Phoenix in 2005.

Dionna Jackson (2005 first round, Detroit Shock)
Epilogue: Waived by Chicago Sky in 2007.

Leah Rush (2007 third round, Phoenix Mercury)
Epilogue: Waived by Chicago in 2008.

Ashley Paris (2009 second round, LA Sparks)
Reason for optimism: Signed this offseason by the Atlanta Dream

Courtney Paris (2009 first round, Sacramento Monarchs)
Reason for optimism: Signed this offseason by the LA Sparks

Nyeshia Stevenson (2010 third round, Phoenix Mercury)
Epilogue: Waived by Phoenix in 2010.

Abi Olajuwon (2010 third round, Chicago Sky)
Reason for optimism: While she was cut by Chicago in 2010, her twitter page still lists her with the Sky. She might have signed an offseason deal?

Amanda Thompson (2010 second round, Tulsa Shock)
Epilogue: Cut from Tulsa midseason last year, have not heard anything since.

And so, I end this year's blog reminding and begging you all --- support this program. Cheer hard for these players, because after they're out of OU, they're likely entering the real world like most OU grads. Their time in Sherri's program, nothing will compare afterward.

So anyway, we love you, Sooners. Good luck in your future endeavors after graduation, please visit often. :)

One final time: Boomer!
