Dear Brain Trust:

I heard a local media story today saying Landry is a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback award. The reporter mentioned that previous OU players to win include:

Sam Bradford (2008)

Jason White (2003, 2004)

and (curiously) Billy Sims (1978).

So if you've made it this far, you might be thinking "Now wait a minute, SbOrOiNaEnR...why does Billy Sims have a Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award???"

'Tis where the plot thickens. From 1978-1980, the award was (per the award's website (http://www.daveyobrien.org/adminnm/templates/aboutus.asp?articleid=24&zoneid=1))...

...to be presented annually to the most outstanding player in the Southwest Conference.

So after a little geography and history, and reaching the conclusion that this:

Does not equal this:

I am left feeling like this:

So in conclusion, can any old-timers on the board offer a definitive answer (or at the very least, clues) as to why Big Eight legend Billy Sims has an award for the SWC's most outstanding player?

(OU's General State of Awesome and Longtime Pwnage of the SWC aside, of course)

I thought that Josh won that when Weinke won the Heisman...I guess I had that wrong.

Maybe it was the Maxwell.

I just read the wiki and they have it wrong...

It was a regional award, the O'Brien Memorial Trophy...O'Brien had just died of cancer when the award was started..

I don't know anything else..

Sims was the only non SWC player to win it in that time...Im pretty sure Mike Singletary won it once, maybe twice

He did win it twice. Earl Campbell won it the year before. But Baylor and Texas held the misinformation up...Sims and OU were the wild cards.

So in that case, the O'Brien Award's website is wrong too.

I did a little Googling and it looks like you're right. A few other pre-QB-only write-ups had the 5-state regional award explanation, too.
