I just had one of my employees tell me that he'd already put in 31 hours this week so he'd probably be taking off a little early today.

What am I missing here?

An employee for a couple of hours?

Probably, which I don't care about, but he told me this as justification for bailing early. Like I said, whatever, but walking away I'm like "that made no sense."

Is he French?

What am I missing here?

reliability?
commitment?
company person?
desire?

or, you could tell him "That's fine, I can use the time to look at it as an opportunity to upgrade."

This guy has only survived firing to this point because he's the only language X developer I have and we've got a client paying for work in that language. Once the project is over, he's gone.

He must be French...

with apologies to BillyBall.

His work schedule is evidently based on his need, not yours.

What am I missing here?

Another employee who brings more to the table than JUST programming in language X?

I came in late, today. I'll leave early to make up for it, though.

It means he aint gave a full 8 hrs at least one day this week so he deserves to cut out early to make up the difference

It sounds like Lowe's math to me - clock the eff out before 40 hours or your fired because we don't want you at full time to have to pay for benefits and crap.

Sounds like he's saving you money, V!

What am I missing here?

Maybe he misspoke and meant to say 35 hours? Could this simply be a miscommunication?

That wouldn't be nearly as funny.

We are also missing the fact that you are an evil boss that has one of those weird four-day work weeks where everyone works 10-hour days.

So yeah, he's only gonna stay for nine of those 10 hours today... you big meanie! :P

Speaking it and programming it are different animals though.

Firing someone now is actually harder than hiring someone since they look for every possible avenue to sue ya.

Since I own my own business now I really have to document everything....gone are they days of "Dude....you really suck.....get your **** and get out". I really do miss those days.:D :D

Since he'll be gone soon, why sweat it? When the time comes (and it will), savage his name to all who ask. Call him a lazy jackass who can't work well with others. Say his attitude sucks (which it does). What did his previous employers say about him? Could you find no one else who can do that job? And are you documenting his jackassery? That would be a definite bonus if he threatens to sue you for telling the truth about him.

If he is programming in arabic or farsi or something like that I'd be watching my *** when it comes time to fire him. Them crazy mother****ers like to blow **** up.

Reminds me of when I worked at the walmarts. They would start freaking out if I was getting close to just 36 hours!
