Stoops just mentioned in his presser that for whatever reason the grass was high and wet, when they were up there. I would think for a finesse offense they would want the field to be in good condition.

There's always the perception that you've got to slow OU down with field conditions whenever possible....big time in the '70's against the 'bone.

Up where? Mizzou has turf now.

He was referring to the game in which we won with the fake field goal. I didnt know they went to turf.

There's always the perception that you've got to slow OU down with field conditions whenever possible....big time in the '70's against the 'bone. When OU ran the bone, they relied on superior speed. During that same period, mizzou had some bigger ploding type backs. High, wet grass favored the bigger back's running style. mizzou was famous for wetting down the grass even if it didn't rain. Might still be their only real claim to fame.

Cool, i was hoping he didnt mean 06. I think they changed it in 2003 or so. I've always wondered why, it's always been said mizzou had tall high grass to slow everyone else down.

I've never heard about that, interesting, and besides Booger, I think it is one of the few claims to fame.

We accused the puffs of doing the same thing in 1972. They dealt the Sooners their only pre-forfeit loss that season (long story, if you don't already know). If you ever have an opportunity to see some video of that game, watch carefully when OU backs try to make cuts and you'll see water splashing as their feet hit the turf . . . the artificial turf. The Sooner halfbacks seemed to lose their footing a lot that day, which contributed to the loss. Yes, we accused them of watering artificial turf before the game.

So did Mizzou play on a different field when it was their ball?

I remember when the 2005 USC team complained about Notre Dame's grass when they went up there. Reggie Bush said they all just laughed when they saw it. I think the issue would be that Mizzou or Notre Dame would be prepared for this come game time, because maybe they practiced in it all week, and had the proper cleats available for the game.

So did Mizzou play on a different field when it was their ball? Larger, straight ahead backs don't slip as much on unstable turf. Lighter, shiftier backs lose their footing on unstable turf. Same turf, different running back types.

I read somewhere that Saturday's game will be played in knee-deep grass with the sprinklers on.

I went to the 02 game and you could tell the grass looked like it had grown for about 2 weeks. Plus if you go to the tape right before halftime Stoops bit it hard on the sidelines trying to run after the ref to chew on him. I'm sure that's why he remembers that one so vividly.

I remember that game with Brad Smith. They claimed the sprinklers had malfunctioned the night before. It was a lake with grass that hadn't been mowed for sometime.

If it slows us down I would think it would slow them down too. Of course if you are slow on any surface it might help. I have no idea but I know Stoops was mad as hell about it.
