A Rutgers player injured making a tackle on a kickoff return sustained a horrific neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

LeGrand had emergency surgery overnight to stabilize the spine.

Schiano, who had tears in his eyes during his press conference following Rutgers 23-20 overtime win over Army, talked to his team around noon on Sunday.

I always think of Dennis Byrd, and I hope this poor kid recovers as well as Dennis has.

This is so sad. My son had a C5 burst fracture when he was 15. His neck is fused from C2 through C7. The doctors call him a 'miracle' because 99% of people with this kind of injury end up paralyzed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Eric LeGrand and his family, team mates and friends. Miracles do happen...

i have met eric several times this season, one of my very close friends is one of there strength and conditioning coaches, and he is a awesome kid, great heart gives it everything he has on all plays, shame to see this type of thing happen especially when you have met and hung out with him. best wishes to him and his family

terrible that this is one of the (potential, and thankfully rare) consequences of sports like football. hate to see bad things happen to good people in a sport we love so much. here's to a full and speedy recovery.

Man, I hope the problem is just swelling around the injury that will fade given some time.

Word is on the Rutgers board that he's moving his big toe and feels tingles in his hand:

That's great news.

inspiring words from Adam Taliaferro. For those who don't remember he was the Penn St. player who was seriously injured and paralyzed for a time, but rehabbed his way back to leading the team onto the field for their 2001 home opener.
