Can somebody expain the cyclone/bird thing to me?

They were already the Cyclones when the "cute" costumes became the rage. There isn't a way to make a Cyclone (or a Hurricane) kid friendly, so they started thinking about alternative mascot costume. Someone suggested a "Cardinal", as red was one of the school colors.
I read this on one of the ISU forums in the last week, just don't remember which one.
