On this day in 1810, Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, later King Ludwig I of Bavaria, marries Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The Bavarian royalty invited the citizens of Munich to attend the festivities, held on the fields in front of the city gates.

These famous public fields were named Theresienwiese--"Therese's fields"in honor of the crown princess; although locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n." Horse races in the presence of the royal family concluded the popular event, celebrated in varying forms all across Bavaria.

mmmm, two liter beer mugs

The decision to repeat the festivities and the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the annual Oktoberfest, which now begins in late September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. Alcohol consumption is an important part of the modern festival, and more than 1 million gallons of beer are consumed annually at Oktoberfest.

Fun for the whole family, the Munich Oktoberfest has all sorts of carnival-style attractions.

Sooo, this year at the big honkin' Oktoberfest in Tulsa (http://www.tulsaoktoberfest.org/), (Oktoberfest in Tulsa ist wunderbar!) or wherever you happen to celebrate it, make sure to hoist one in honor of good 'ol Ludwig & Therese of Bavaria whose nuptials were the original reason for the season.

Note:

This sort of thing is not permitted:

We went to the Choctaw Octoberfest last month. Not nearly as good or bog as the Tulsa one, but we still managed to get our drunky on.

Oktoberfest in Tulsa ist wunderbar!

Das ist wahr!

I've been blessed enough to have recently returned from this year's Oktoberfest and Tulsa's is HANDS DOWN, the closest thing I have ever seen to the real thing. I'd always heard that we had a good one, but there is officially no argument to be made short of a ticket to München.

Ein prosit! Zu Tulsa!

wife and i recently discussed going to munich next year for the festivities. secondary purpose is to find my long-lost bavarian/german heritage. how does a last name of FUHR (2 dots above the "U") strike you? that's what it was about 300 years ago.

Our dream trip is to tour Europe for about 2 weeks and go to Munich for Oktoberfest.
