The public wants her in full whore mode. And the public won't be satisfied until she is making sex tapes or strung out on drugs (most likely both). People like Oprah and the crew at TMZ feed off this stuff.

OK. $50M. My bad. Still, that is a ridiculous amount of money. I'd be willing to bet Billy Ray remembers the Ramen days after his career went down the tubes well enough that he doesn't let her go broke.

I watched the video. I'm not sure where the outrage comes from. She's dressed like every other girl her age dresses now. Short shorts, too-revealing top, vaguely slutty behavior. I can go to Sooner Mall right now and see at least a couple girls dressed just like that. But yeah, go ahead and shelter your kids from it. That'll probably work out just fine.

That's naive. Kids learn not just from parents, but from peers and idols. One of the reasons we prevent our kids from hanging out with the wrong crowd is to keep them from learning the wrong things.

So when teen idols start putting out racy videos, parents are forced into either banning their kids from watching them (which is getting harder and harder every year) or applying pressure on the idols to clean up their act.

Unless you are raising an adolescent right now, you don't realize how hard it is. Thankfully my kids are a little older. I pity those that aren't so lucky.

and there is nothing naive about it, alot of parents these days are flat out lazy. Not all, there are a ton of GREAT parents out there but cmon man, if Miley is your daughters teen idol then you gotta keep it under control.

My future niece loves Miley but her parents dont let her watch her music videos. There is a reason, they are intelligent parents

Who made her a teen idol? If parents are letting their kids be influenced by some celebrity then thats on the parents 100

You can't just shut your kids away from the outside world. They would like to listen to music too. So you make sure that the recording artists they like hold certain ideals.

And then the recording artist ditches that ideal and turns into a porn queen. So a parent's watchdog group informs you of this development so that you can take appropriate action. Then people like you complain about the watchdog group.

My future niece loves Miley but her parents dont let her watch her music videos. There is a reason, they are intelligent parents

They are also well-informed. But you are bitching about the watchdog group that is helping inform parents.

You can't have it both ways. If you want parents to keep their kids from being unduly influenced by unsavory elements, then you should support those groups that help parents make the right choices.

Those are the only two choices, eh?

No, you could shoot your kids. Then you won't have to worry about the problem anymore. You can ship them off to be someone's problem. That'll work. You can pretend that they are just miniature adults and lecture them, appealing to their intellect. If your 15-year-old has the maturity level of a 40-year-old that might work.

Of all things that you choose to argue against, educating your kids against worshiping teenie boppers isnt one I would expect, but then again you argue everything.

It is a parents job to allow their kids to enjoy certain things but also inform them why it isnt good to be so obsessed and try to be like celebrities. There is nothing wrong with listening to the music, watching the movies, buying the clothes, just dont let them become obsessed with them and want to be like them. That should be a fairly teachable thing

Math is a very teachable thing. But not all kids learn it to the extent we want. Besides, how many of us here have a Sam Bradford poster? (I don't, btw.) What's the difference?

And we're not talking about idolatry here, but influence. Yes, I can teach my kids not to idolize celebrities, but keeping them from being influenced by celebrities is harder than you think.

All parents can do is to fight the trends as best as they can. So what's wrong with groups who keep an eye on the trends and issue warning notices when they see trouble? Why are you arguing against that?

The problem is that you are so conditioned to scream "Tipper Gore! Tipper Gore!" at the first sight of a group complaining about the behavior of teen music artists that you never bothered to read the story. Read it again and point out where this watchdog group has done anything untoward. As I said before, your argument that parents need to be informed would lend itself to supporting this group.

Maybe it's the fact that these people's sole purpose in life seems to be watching videos and judging which famous people are palatable and which are not. Or maybe he takes exception to the fact that the very nature of these groups is to assume that you don't know how to parent effectively, so they're here to help. Or maybe the problem is that these people are different than me/him, and they don't necessarily share the same views, but they're too self-important to see that and go ahead and trumpet their (supposedly) correct viewpoint from the rooftops.

Imagine it this way. You're at Target, and your son of 14 years old has a Chris Brown shirt on. Another parent, obviously very concerned about your child's well-being and his choice in music, asks you..."should you really let him wear that shirt? I mean, he DID beat up his girlfriend." You mean to tell me that it's not a little bit offensive that some stranger --who doesn't know you, your child, or your home situatio -- feels like he knows what's better for your kid than you do enough that he comes over to you and comments on it? BS.

Or maybe the problem is that these people are different than me/him, and they don't necessarily share the same views, but they're too self-important to see that and go ahead and trumpet their (supposedly) correct viewpoint from the rooftops.

This one truly makes no sense. There are only about a billion advocacy groups in this country. They are formed from people that have a common viewpoint and know that many others share their viewpoint.

The NAACP is one example. So is the AARP and every trade union in the country.

Imagine it this way. You're at Target, and your son of 14 years old has a Chris Brown shirt on. But they're not calling individuals and telling them what their kid should or should not listen to. They are issuing a bulletin for all that care to read it. Big difference.

How do you feel about political endorsements?

Seriously, do you get riled up when a group of people endorses a political candidate? These groups are doing nothing more than what this parent's group is doing.

You're missing the point. It's not so hard to see where people could resent groups like this. They're feigning outrage over something that isn't outrageous, and they're making a big deal about it. They're telling people what to care about. If there's not a level of arrogance there I don't know what else to call it. I'm sure the above mentioned special interest groups are plenty useful for the people they apply to. But since none of them apply to me...IDGAS.

And the other thing that amuses me about these people is that in the 25 some-odd years since Tipper started the PMRC they still haven't learned the most basic lesson: That the attention they give these people is exactly what the preformers want. They're shooting themselves in the foot. Case in point: I NEVER would have watched a Miley Cyrus video on youtube...until these idiots starting crying about it.

Bull****. The title of the thread was specifically about Miley Cyrus and you willingly opened the thread (and link) and read it. You could have simply ignored the thread if you wished. In no way did this group force their opinions on you. In fact, we know their opinions because they were asked. Are they supposed to withhold their opinions because YOU might be bothered by them?

I'm not a Democrat. I receive mail from Democrats too telling me who they think I should vote for. So what? That's their right and I don't resent them for it. Should I?

You're missing the point. It's not so hard to see where people could resent groups like this. They're feigning outrage over something that isn't outrageous, and they're making a big deal about it.

Show me the quote expressing their outrage. And remember you used the term "outrage."

And whether Miley's behavior is outrageous is a matter of opinion. You cannot corner the market on what is proper decency.

Every special interest group out there manages to formulate resentment against them. You don't think the NRA has its detractors? The NAACP?

The other day I received mail from the NRA, in which they detailed the politicians running for government and which ones the NRA endorses. I could have thrown this info in the trash if I wished, so in no way did the NRA force their opinions on me. They are doing nothing more than what the parent's group is doing -- informing the public of their opinions. The public (get this) does not have to act on their opinions.

I'm sure the above mentioned special interest groups are plenty useful for the people they apply to. But since none of them apply to me...IDGAS.

So don't act on their opinions. You are acting like they are putting a gun to your head. If a group has a message and you don't like it, ignore them! But don't cry like a little girl over it.

I drive down I-10 here in AZ all the time. They have these BILLBOARDS and.. and... and these billboards have messages on them. Sometimes I don't like these messages, so I guess I have no choice but to pull over and have a nervous breakdown. Oh, these horrible groups! Putting messages I DON'T LIKE on billboards where I have no choice but to see them.

Man up!

I know that some of you feel very strongly about your music and freedom of expression for artists without the judgmental types trying to tell us what we should like and dislike. I very much appreciate that and agree.

On the other hand, I think there is a role to be played by special consumer interest groups. In this case, I really don't think parents today, with both of them working, really have time to vet the music that their kids listen to.

This is not apples and apples comparison, but I very much like consumer interest groups that highlight which manufacturers and retailers sell American-made merchandise. The US government can't do it and they, hopefully, will serve a bigger role in influencing US consumer decisions.

Alright yeah, I very much DISLIKE special interest consumer groups launching boycotts against manufacturers and retailers who offer equal rights to gay employees.

Nobody's having a nervous breakdown, Sally, don't you worry your pretty little head.

But there is a big difference between a boycott and simply informing the public of your opinions. The parent's group is not calling for a boycott, just stating their opinion. Some of us cry like little nancy-boys when we hear opinions contrary to our own.

Yeah, that was me that called for the boycott.

My bad.

not informing, trying to form

Are parents really so lazy these days that they need a group of ppl to tell them what is good and what isnt good for their kids?

Kinda.

Think of it not as parents needing to be told what to do, but giving them a peek at what some of these things contain. I for one will make it a point in life to not purchase a Miley Cyrus CD. Some of my daughter's friends think Hannah Montana is the cat's ***. I think it's mindblowingly retarded. Therefore outside of the television show, there needs to be some outlet to be informed about certain trends in popular music and culture without reinforcing said culture by purchasing their trash.

I personally don't use it. But I can see how it'd be amazingly useful to keep a leg up on what's out there.

How many videos aimed at the pre-teen market do you want to sit through each day?

If you wish, I can post links to the latest round of Jonas Brothers vids if you really want a go at it.

No.

We're waiting for November and Miley's 18th birthday so this can devolve into a perv thread.
