Sign him up! I don't understand why/how OU cannot seem to recruit a top notch HS kicker that's credible outside the 25 yd line. They're out there. Is it just not a priority with Sooners or what?

Wasnt Tress Way a "credible" kicker outside of 25 yards in high school?

Wasnt Stevens?

There are good kickers out there, but there really are not that many, so it is hard to really find them.

We will land us a kicker that will have you all jizzing your pants one of these days. Until then you all will be bitching about a kicker that has made more than he has missed.

Not hard to do if you have have no one rushing you or no pressure on you at all. Also, if you have the leg power to get it that far.

Our kickers have the leg, their accuracy is just in question.

Jimmy Stevens was very highly regarded in high school. So we do recruit top notch kickers. They just don't seem to be consistent at this level. I'm not sure if losing the tee is causing them problems or what.

It's psychological. It's GOTTA be.

Like 75 said, Tress Way was automatic coming out of Union. Strongest leg to be had. And it was like the kid had a laserbeam in his pocket. All of a sudden that ain't the case anymore. So we've got two issues. Either a coach came in, destroyed his technique and made him start from scratch or something got in the kid's head between high school and now. Beer, poontang, school work (har har har), I dunno. Either way, it's not the grip it and rip it leg it used to be.

NormanPride
10/5/2010, 08:31 AM
Well, Tress is working on being a punter. A bad *** one. When they threw him into the Nebraska game, he hadn't practiced kicking field goals at all and had lost the feel of then. It's a completely different swing.

Meh. I went to one game when he was in HS and thought, "We are giving a scholly to this kid?" It was Davis @ Heritage Hall and Jimmy missed 2 FGs. One was like 33 yards and the other was like 27 yards. Its not like he was a phenom. He does well at times, though. But he wasn't even that consistent in HS. If we could get someone that could make it consistently from inside 40, I would be ecstatic. But for now, I will just hope the guy (and O'Hara) have confidence and kick well for us for the rest of the season.

Collier11
10/5/2010, 11:54 AM
He was terribly inconsistent his senior year but a part of that was because he was going for the national FG record which he eventually got. The coaches were letting him try a lot of long FGs on 4th's and short type situations as opposed to going for it because of this reason. In the long run I cant imagine this helped him.

I watched Tress Way in the Backyard Bowl before he came to OU and was excited, and I've never been excited about a kicker before. Maybe it's not a position that we coach up very well. Not pointing fingers, but there's got to be a reason. I don't think that it's recruiting.

Every year I can't wait to read all about who we've recruited to kick FGs on the SF.com Recruiting Board. It's a topic that I can never hard wait for during the off-season. The amount of discussion that goes on usually resolves all of our problems. We must not have done our homework this year. :pop:  :D

It could be a myriad of things.

However, one of the biggest differences that a lot of kickers have a problem overcoming from High School to College is the fact that in college you do not have the ball 1-2 inches off the ground when it is placed for the hold.

Believe it or not, that does change a lot of things for kickers.

I don't think it is a coaching or recruiting issue, he does have the leg power for long kicks, his problem as a PK is accuracy and accuracy cannot be coached.

The Fact that we go for it on 4th and 10 on the 30? That we have no faith these guys can make one over 45 yards? The fact that if we ever needed a game winning kicked we're SOL?

As a former kicker: From a tee to off the ground is a DIFFERENT planet....and there's no way for coaches to evaluate a kicker kicking off the ground unless a tape is provided. It's as though high school games don't even matter.

I've always thought the best route is to find a strong-legged soccer player and convert him....like Jan Stenerud.

As far as grilled cheese sammiches go, I bet adding bacon would be teh win!!

Off the top of my head.....the Coaches could have called a timeout when they ran the clock down and set the damn ball 5 yards further from the uprights too.

I've gone back and watched the tape a few times now and we had all the time in the World to set the FG up. Huge mistake and it wasn't the fault of one guy either.

That's pretty damn good! I nailed a 48 yarder when I was a kicker for my high school, and I was ecstatic about that, but it's much harder to kick in pads and when there's thousands of screaming fans around you, along with an opposing team trying to block it!
