I thought that was one of differences between pass interference and defensive holding, that the former was an automatic first down but not the latter.

It is an automatic first down, in the pros. Saw it called today in the Eagles/Skins game.

As did I, as I mentioned in an earlier thread.

According the the NCAA rulebook, defensive holding is indeed an automatic first down:

I. During a legal forward pass that crosses the neutral zone, B1 holds
eligible A1 who is beyond the neutral zone. The pass is not catchable
by A1. RULING: Team B foul, holding. Penalty—10 yards at the
previous spot and first down.
II. Before a legal forward pass that crosses the neutral zone is thrown,
Team B holds eligible A1, who is beyond the neutral zone. RULING:
Team B foul, holding. Penalty—10 yards and first down, previousspot
enforcement

There must be another application of it where you only get 5 yards?

Yeah, I think I'm using an outdated rulebook. I seem to remember they were trying out 10 yards from the previous spot last year for whatever reason. Looked all through last year's rulebook and couldn't find a 5 yarder.

I'll look at this year's real quick.

Crap. The link for the new rulebook is broken.

Or that the pass didn't cross the neutral zone. Which seems likely. That makes sense.
