BYU loses QB to shoulder injury

PROVO, Utah (AP)—BYU says quarterback Riley Nelson is done for the season because of an injury to his right shoulder.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall said in a release Tuesday that Nelson will need surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and be out four to five months. Nelson injured his shoulder in BYU’s 34-10 loss at Florida State.

Nelson started the first three games this season and shared time with freshman Jake Heaps, who is now the Cougars’ most experienced QB.

Nelson says he’s getting the injury taken care of as soon as possible and getting moving on his recovery.

BYU (1-2) is at home Saturday against Nevada.

This doesn't hurt them too much since he had been splitting time with the other kid. What is interesting is that they are on a 2-game losing streak to two of the three teams Oklahoma has already beaten (Air Force, Florida St.) and have to play at the third (Utah State). Also, and part of this is may be due to the competition, BYU's offense has been getting progressively worse. Their output has gone from 23 points/400 total yards to 14 points/300 total yards to 10 points/200 total yards. This week they play an undefeated Nevada team, fresh off a big win over Cal.

Does it make me a bad person delighted to see this team's season unravel?

Actually they've been running a "two QB" system this year, so in a way it helps them because now they have just one QB, particularly since Nelson was not a drop-back style QB and this other kid is.

That said, Heaps is just a freshman, a cocky one at that. He's said after the FSU game that they will finish the season 10-0. I guess he'll be playing defense, also, then, since the BYU defense this year is ranked somewhere around #100.

It doesn't. But some people just get kicks out of injuries to other teams. Makes no sense.

Nevada is solid and will beat Boise at home at the end of the year, dashing all hopes for BCS.

Didn't Cincy's Grutza go down with a broken leg against us? I'm sure you would have been OK with Cincy fans rejoicing in the news of Bradford going down last year ...right?

Seriously, these guys aren't multi-million dollar prima donnas. Even if they do a little irritating endzone proposal after beating us, I can't see why anyone would laugh at an injury. BYU affects us in no way unless we're playing them Saturday, and even then it sucks for one of their amateur athletes to get hurt.

I would never take delight in anyone getting hurt, let alone a 18-22 yr old who is busting his butt daily for his school, or in osu's case a 27yr old or two.

I agree, except for that fat ***, #74 from FSU who gave Broyles the business late after the play on the sidelines. I hope that guy breaks both of his ****ing legs. :D

Personally I feel for the kid and wish him a full recovery.

As for BYU, I really don't give a ****. It's not like they matter AT ALL this year.

Jacie just said that he/she/it was delighted to see their season unravel, not that he/she/it was delighted the kid is hurt.

I mean I don't have a dog in this fight, that's just how I read it.

Close, he's 22 or 23. Nelson sat out two years knocking on doors in Spain and was poached from Utah State by BYU during that time, leading to USU lobbying for and getting the NCAA to pass a new rule, "Riley Nelson Rule".

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705333312/NCAA-adds-Riley-Nelson-Rule-to-books.html

So if the "Riley Nelson Rule" had been in effect a few years ago, Nelson would have likely been playing for USU in Norman a few weeks ago.

That's the rest of the story...
