No one deserves to die because they ride their bicycle on a public highway, and this story is indeed tragic. However, a Green Party candidate being killed by an SUV is too ironic not to be mentioned here.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A Green Party candidate running for U.S. Senate in Maryland has died after being hit by an SUV while riding her bike.

Maryland State Police say 30-year-old Natasha Pettigrew died early Tuesday. She was hit by an SUV in Prince George's County early Sunday.

Police say the woman driving the Cadillac Escalade that hit Pettigrew kept driving nearly four miles to her home, even though the bicycle was still lodged underneath the vehicle.

Police say the woman thought she hit a deer or a dog and didn't want to stop in the early morning hours. When she and her husband found the bicycle under the SUV, they called police.

It's also a testament to the arrogant and oblivious minds of some SUV drivers.

I'm sorry, is this the police department? Good, we seem to have a liberal underneath our truck, can you send someone over...thanks.

Actually, that is coincidental, not ironic.

If he were late to his wedding and it were to have rained, that would be an unfortunate coincidence, as would have been a traffic jam had he also been late to aforementioned wedding.

A gas-guzzling SUV running down a candidate for a party that has as its main plank environmentalism? That's irony at its best.

Irony would have been if the candidate was killed by an electric/hybrid car, not a gas guzzling SUV.

That's one way to reclaim the vote.

irony = actual meaning opposite of literal meaning

e.g.

"let's end this recession by spending a trillion dollars..."

Agree. Not ironic. Not in the slightest even. It is more like rain on your wedding day. Or ten thousand forks when all you need is a knife.

This thread reminds me of the "Actually Ironic" (http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1925705) Alanis parody video.

Just. Stop. Please.

The untimely death of the avowed east-coast Greenie (a/k/a anti-SUV person) under the wheels of a full-size, conventionally aspirated and fossil-fuel guzzling SUV is ironic.

or karma.

Either way, it's remarkable.

Maybe when you finally get employed, you can ask your republican boss for a dictionary.

If you don't want to wait the full 99 weeks,
you can go here http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irony

My boss is a Democrat, thank you very much. She also is a small business owner who will make over $100k in profits this year. Is that ironic to you?

Wanna know what else is ironic? That the 2 richest people in the world are both capitalist-hating, socialist Democrats.

Wanna know what else is ironic? The fact that you, as an accountant, likely don't have a job without progressive programs enacted in the early 20th century.

Not ironic, but great to see a Democrat actually have to back up what they preach. Redistribute those profits!

The fact that you would boast about your boss making "$100k" is pretty humorous, don't know if it's ironic yet.

Wanna know what else is ironic? That the 2 richest people in the world are both capitalist-hating, socialist Democrats.

Less than 30% of small business owners are registered democrats...(look it up)

Seems important here to note that I am not an accountant. I own a percentage or all of 3 different businesses.

Also, it's nice to hear that you found employment. I hope you do well.

Weird, I work in a decentralized co-opted head shop and organic bead dispensary and none of my coworkers/bosses/weedman have voted in years.

I doubt that Carlos Slim and Bill Gates could be called socialists....maybe some totalitarian benevolent dictators are up in there that you are talking about.
