Don't have any links, but this is Krista Sanchez's Facebook status:

"RIP Roz Ross....your OU family misses you...we love you always."

Don't know what happened :(

As in Rosalind Ross? She helped OU to our program's first Final Four in 2002 and was one of three OU players drafted in the WNBA first round that year (to the LA Sparks). She was from Milwaukee.

She is on the left of this picture.

Thoughts and prayers with her family :(

That's what I assume, the words in those quotations is the only thing I have seen so far.

Definitely thoughts and prayers with her family and friends!

Local news is confirming it now. The main story picture on the front of NewsOK right now is this:

For those of you that weren't followers of OU womens basketball yet, or weren't even at OU yet, Roz was the 2002 equivalent of Amanda Thompson - a strong player on her own that was overshadowed by another superstar at OU. In Amanda's case, it was Courtney Paris. In Roz's case, it was Stacey Dales (although Roz didn't get an additional year after Stacey's graduation to shine on her own like Amanda did after CP3 graduated). Amanda and Roz also both came from inner city schools before playing college ball - Amanda in the Chicago area, Roz in the Milwaukee area.

While Amanda Thompson had to battle some nagging injuries, Roz had her own uphill battle to Div. 1 - junior college (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M). Two All-American seasons at juco were just too much for Sherri to ignore and Roz became a Sooner :)

Once she got at OU, one of my favorite stories that I read about her was how her father made her earn her shots - he would stand on a chair and make her shoot over his outstretched arms. It definitely made it easier for her to hit 3's to get the crowd fired up (they used to hold two '3' signs together for her big shots, heh) at LNC.

It was a time when the loudest fans were the band, the OU bench, and three labcoat science nerds that were the only ones in the student section (they held up a Wisconsin state cutout for her during player intros), but her hard work and determination gave us something to really cheer about :)

“Roz was a true, good person who was one of the grittiest, hard-working teammates I have ever had. I am incredibly sad that I will never hear her high-pitched, speedy banter again or be able to joke back and forth with her again.”

I am kind of upset that they haven't mentioned this on SS.com yet... I guess they needed the space to tell us who the mens basketball team's four captains are (FOUR captains?! what is this, football?!). However, Sherri released a statement on her own too:

“She was an integral part of that incredibly special 2002 national runner-up team that put our program on the map. Her contribution and legacy are forever etched in our program's history.”

How integral? 26 points and 10 rebounds over Duke in the Final Four game, and 17 points against UConn in the championship game. We had the Husky fans running scared that they might actually lose a game that season when it mattered most, and it was greatly because of of Roz's contribution.

30 years is too young. It is very sad to hear about this. I hope the Sooners dedicate this season to her memory. :(

I don't know if this is something she would've been proud of, but it's how I always described her game......and that is this: Rosalind Ross played like a man.

That girl was TOUGH, and I shall miss her a lot.

They arrested the person responsible, who confessed to shooting Roz.

Link (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20100921_29_B2_hFootb191638&archive=yes)

It was another college basketball player that was friends with Roz since they were teens, and were actually roommates. An argument at a restaurant about a phone call (???) later, and the friend is pointing a gun at Roz, not realizing that it's loaded (according to what she told police).

This is just sad all of the way around.
