Baylor, every year, has a military appreciation game where they give out free tickets to troops from Ft. Hood and they always have a fly-over and other military ceremonies at the game. Well, it's usually around 9/11 but this year it actually falls on 9/11 so the team is playing with "Camo" helmets in honor of the military.

You know, you would think that Army would have similar helmets. Maybe they do...I don't know.

I love the Baylor helmet and the thought of it. I am just wondering why it wasn't green camo.

If you can't win, accessorize.

If you can't win, accessorize.

That may not be a bad strategy. More mechandise sales help pay for better facilities which, in turn, help attract better athletes.

Yeah, Baylor's athletic budget or merchandise sales will still only be a small fraction of UT, A&M or OU. But, I like that Baylor is trying to compete and if that involves a whole lot of "accessorizing", then I'm for it.

BTW, I think that Baylor is bowl bound this year and the Baylor fans will show up.

I can't see the players. They seem to blend in with the field somehow.

RGIII is such a great kid with a great head on his shoulders. He not only excels in the classroom and on the football field but in life in general. Great student athlete.

After he flew through the air and landed in the end zone for Baylor’s first touchdown, Robert Griffin III instantly popped to his feet.

Then he offered a demonstrative salute.

Griffin, whose father Robert Jr. is a retired Army officer, repeated the salute on each subsequent TD in the Bears’ 34-6 blowout of Buffalo. For the Baylor quarterback, it’s merely a new post-score tradition, one he admittedly stole from former Denver Broncos star Terrell Davis.

But that doesn’t mean his dad is ever far from his mind.

“It’s a little shout at my dad, sure,” Griffin said. “It’s Army appreciation day, or whatever you want to call it, and I’m glad he went over to Iraq and served in the war.”

On the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Bears took the turf adorned in camouflage-tinged helmets, honoring the military and other “hometown heroes” in attendance. The coaches also participated, wearing camo hats on the sideline.

The look — and the meaning behind it — seemed to be a hit among the team.

“I like them a lot,” said Griffin, who played his high school ball at Copperas Cove, just a few clicks away from Fort Hood. “If it were up to me, I’d implement them permanently.”

Football isn’t a war, no matter how many times a media member or coach makes that comparison. It’s a game. It’s a hard-hitting, injury-inducing game of relentless physicality, but nobody is truly trying to kill his foe.

War is an actual life-or-death ordeal, something former soldiers like Griffin’s father — and others who attended Saturday’s games in the stands — know all too well.

After the game, Baylor coach Art Briles expressed his pride over participating in team’s camo-topped tribute to the military. But like plenty of Americans, Briles won’t ever forget the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 — whether he coaches a football game on its anniversary or not.

“I’m proud to be an American, but I hate why we have to honor this day,” Briles said.

Griffin has an equally grounded perspective, no doubt a testament to his background. He loves the game of football — and few players have more fun playing it — but no missed touchdown pass, no injury and no gridiron defeat will sting his emotions like seeing his dad leave for battle.

One year, Robert Griffin Jr. was deployed on his son’s birthday.

“Worst birthday ever,” the quarterback said.

Fortunately, Griffin’s father ultimately returned safely.

“He came back, and I’m glad he’s back in my life,” Griffin said.

Now that’s a triumph worthy of a salute.

The camo makes it appear as if all the Baylor players have holes in their head in the shape of BU

Congrats on your win, SicEm. You definitely have what it takes to not be Big 12 South cellar dwellers this year. That dishonor is the Pokes of the Aggies after their showing this past week... even though they won.

Eventually divisions will be gone and you can look at your overall conference standing instead, and good to see that you're not close to the bottom there either... well, closer than us, but that's about all ;)
