Stoops hopeful for loud crowd at Florida State game

* Clark Foy/The Daily

Thursday, September 9, 2010

The last time the Sooners met Florida State was a memorable one for the Sooners.

It was OU’s last national championship in a year when the Sooners were an afterthought when it came to winning the conference, much less a national title. But coach Bob Stoops led his team by Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles 13-2.

Stoops now meets the Seminoles for the second time in his career at OU, but this time against coach Jimbo Fisher, FSU’s offensive coordinator behind Bowden before he retired.

Florida State comes to Norman with the Sooners on a school record and the nation’s current longest home win streak of 31 games.

The Seminoles, led by quarterback Christian Ponder, will be the Sooners’ first real test of the season, and the win streak will be on the line.

“I don’t think there’s any special reason other than we’ve played well,” Stoops said about why his team plays so well at home. “Good things usually happen to you when you do.”

While Stoops emphasized his intentions on not getting overconfident or concerned with records, he did show his gratitude to the Sooner fan base and even referred back to one of the most notable home victories of the 31-game streak.

“They have been really special, in particular as of late,” he said. “We’re incredibly hopeful that they’ll show up this weekend in a similar fashion that they did against Texas Tech.”

But many were left concerned and bewildered after a better-than-expected Utah State team came to Norman and left a seven-point loser.

“It was decent,” coach Bobby Jack Wright said of the pressure on Utah State’s Michael Borell. “It was nothing special. It needs to be a lot better this week.”

Wright also noted that the offensive for the Seminoles is much more talented than that of the Aggies. While they may not be as big as a lot of lines in the country, they excel at zone blocking and are very agile.

Ponder will provide a different threat than Borrell did as he is more of a pocket passer by trade. But don’t let the title fool you; the kid can move just fine.

“The thing about any quarterback, especially one that is mobile, is you’ve got to keep them in the pocket,” Wright explained.

“Ponder is not necessarily a runner or a scrambler, but he can run and he does have good running ability.”

But yeah, if Stoops wants us to get loud, all he has to do is "coach" us again... be all like "The crowd is OK, but they are louder in the SEC. Even Boone Pickens has a louder crowd with less people."

I'll be screaming loud and proud!

I do know all the words to the OU Chant and most of them to the Grand Ole Flag. However, in my opinion, we can just do away with the Grand Ole Flag. It's nice, it's patriotic, but it's not very game inspiring.

You must not be a tuba. They don't play at the beginning of that song (not including the intro), so they all sing until they start like 30 seconds in (or about 8 measures in for your music types, heh).

I was an honorary tuba for a few years - got copes of the banned Texas paper that would have never been approved by the directors and everything, so I too, learned the words.

:O they just aren't the words that the 65+ crowd sings.

I'm just annoyed that the coach has to mention it.

Every time I go to a game I am horse by the end of the first quarter :) I am always shocked at how quiet the crowd is for such a large stadium. I did some graduate studies at Arizona State; for a little stadium with a mediocre team Sun Devil was pretty loud.

See you guys there. I'll be the loud guy who loses his voice somewhere around the 4th quarter.

I am a little bit nervous about our home winning streak, but it seems that the coaches always have the team a little bit more prepared for the games that might threaten the streak, as the Tech game proves.

Tech just beat Texas and had the best receiver in the country and were ranked #2...and Coach Mikey always struck fear into us fans. But somehow, we didn't just win... we CRUSHED them and left their case for their first Big 12 crown utterly helpless (and most amusingly, made the Texas fans extremely whiny the rest of the regular season).

I have high hopes for this Saturday for that reason.

Stoopsie shouldn't have to mention the dang crowd cuz it should be like that every Saturday in Norman. And if you can't handle the noise give up yer tickets to someone that can.

I don't know how many current students are on this board, but the overwhelming majority of the ones I stood next to last week couldn't have given less of a crap about the game. They were all texting, gossiping about who gave who a hummer at what frathouse, and who was cute in Post Civil War History. The ones that were paying attention were the ones that were booing Landry Jones and calling for Blake Bell.

Needless to say I was less than impressed with our students.

Haha well that's probably how about 75% of the student section usually is, unless of course College Gameday is in town, and they realize how big the game is. Sometimes when I scream things on nearly every play, I almost feel out of place. But I'm sure they would be more than happy to be extremely loud if someone actually called out the student section, like Bob did against Tech and is pretty much doing here. We have to face it though, we're not one of those schools with fans who will just be insane all the time. I'm not sure how we can change that, but I would love to!

The Midnight Yell at A&M would be something that would help the loudness and craziness of our crowd, because then we could have someone address most of the student body when theyre in one spot at one time. Then maybe we, as students, would all realize how important this game really is. Maybe having a "pep rally" in the stadium on a friday afternoon or night?

Sorry man. Coach told us it hadn't been played since the 6o's when he brought it back in ~1990 (I was a Pride Tuba for...well...let's call it a few years and leave it at that). We didn't like playing it. We much preferred playing the opposing school's fight song at them better than their own band could play it. :D Which is what we did at that point in pre-game prior to the return of GOF.

Oh...and if any of you are seated up under the W. upper deck and you see a salt-and-pepper older gentleman with thick glasses and hearing aids not standing, give him a break - it might be my dad, who at age 73 is going to the game 5 weeks after being cut open from navel to sternum for surgery. Sadly this is the way it has been trending over the past 3 years. my first year as a student it was pretty good then it gradually got worse. Last year there were people every game making fun of the people doing the BOOMER SOONER yell in line to get in and inside the stadium. I almost lost it on those people. There are students also starting to complain about standing the entire time. There were plenty of people paying attention but that crowd got smaller every year.

I went to OU/tx in 08 and was surprised (and kinda embarrassed) that the texas half of the stadium was so much louder than OUr half. I would love to get on the marketing dept at OU and fire some people up!

Seriously!!! I sat on the west side for the the first time ever last week (2nd time on Saturday)...and everyone around me, in addition to all being over the age of 65, knew the words to "Grand Ole Flag." Three years in the Pride and I don't even know the words to that song. Nor do I care.

My elementary school had a rotation of patriotic songs, and they would play one every morning just before the Pledge of Allegiance.

"Grand Ole Flag" was one of those songs, along with My Country Tis of Thee, the National Anthem, and Oklahoma.

Hearing GOF every other week for six years has done the trick. I know all the words. Although worryingly, I am fast approaching becoming one of the "old people." Gad, I hate that.

Do our dear kinder still get some pro-America propaganda in the schools? If not, it's time we got that going again!

This is how I handle it, during timeouts, stoppages in play, etc... I will sit down so it doesnt seem like I am just standing to spite them, when the ball is in play though I am up

That's how I've basically done it for years, since I was a kid.

We sat (my family still sits) in row 10, Section 5 -- and basically every snap of the ball (except for late in blow outs) the whole first row would stand up, then the second row had to follow suit, then the third, all the way up to the top of lower deck, as far as I could tell.

If you just try to be subtle and not be obnoxious, usually nobody will get mad.

On the other hand, at the 1976 TX game (when I was a short-for-my-age 9 yr old), some old fossil told me to stop standing on my seat because he couldn't see. Well, even standing on my seat I was looking straight into the back of the guy in front of me, so I still don't know what was up. But that guys probably been dead for more that 20 years, so I guess that's that.

Noise is missing from all home games and its sad because we, the fans, need to be the x factor at all home games, especially when the opposing team is on offense...

went to a Colorado/Nebraska game a few years ago at Folsom in Boulder along with a Colorado/team from Austin and there was more noise from the Austin schools fans and Nebraska fans than Colorado.... now thats sad and we need ot be careful we dont end up like CU fans.....

plus I want noise everytime those Nole fans start that stupid tomahawk chant.....

Under NO circumstances must that stupid crap be allowed in our house.

The fans should respond either with deafening "BOOMER! SOONER!" or Heupel's 2000 "O-Ok-la-ho-o-ma! O-Ok-la-ho-o-ma!" sung to their tomahawk chant's tune.

Down here, they do something akin to a pledge of allegiance to the State of Texas. I was horrified when my oldest told me he had been doing this for 2 years already. I told him not to do it anymore as it was inappropriate and told him why. He then told his teacher that his daddy told him not to do it anymore and she asked him "Don't you like Texas?"

Anyway, still a agitated that they do this. He tells me he doesn't do it but I'm sure he does just to not rock the boat. He's now started 3 grade so he now has 3 years behind him of doing this.

I married a woman brainwashed into that crap. The schools start all of it at a very early age so it's easy to accept after years and years of it. Luckily I had her "cleansed" of that thought process after a few years and even though we're divorced, at least she doesn't carry that stuff over to our kids.

Yeah I was wondering how many FSU fans would be coming into town...there were quite a few Miami fans here back in 2007 but I can't recall the last non conf opponent to come close to selling out their allotment. If nothing else, let's get some FSU chicks on campus corner...hot, drunk, and ditzy. Strikes one, two, and three right there. Still, shame this game isn't at night...would be a much better atmosphere.

08 Tech was a special game and the perfect storm. Two top 5 teams squaring off for the conferece, and potentially, national championship. A 7 pm November showdown, in front of a national audience.

You can just recreate something that special.

It's like Tech playing "Jump Around" trying to stick it to OU last year, down in Lubbock, in a battle of 2 unranked teams, having breakfast at 11 AM, on Fox Sports Southwest. No pop.

Last week was the first time I have ever sat in the student section as I've always had tickets with my parents, and I must say it was very disappointing. From my usual section growing up, the student section always looked very rowdy and just plain fun to be in but when I actually got there, it was mostly people staring at cell phones and talking about how bad the defense was and how Landry isn't even good enough to be on the field. I also got to witness a drunk girl tossing up the day's keystone light so that was fun! I just hope that this weekend people will actually pay attention and try to make a difference in the game.

I'd like to say that the student section started off alright last week, but trailed off as soon as we stopped scoring every possession (so....about 4 minutes in). After that I started to feel like no one would have even yelled when we were on defense if I didn't start it myself, kind of sad. I haven't left a football game with my voice intact since marching band days in high school and I don't intend to start tomorrow. So here's at least one group of students that are going to be as drunk and loud as possible by kickoff.

It doesn't help that a bunch of clubs on campus have someone show up as soon as the gates open to save 4 rows of seats at the front of the section. They're always the quietest ones; all of us that spent our time "preparing" for the game get stuck towards the top.

Top is better anyways, you can see more of the play. Maybe less 'exciting' and won't get on tv/bigscreen but I would rather see the game better.

my last student days are now, sadly, 25 years in the past. I am concerned with our youth today. Not condoning abject violence or boorish behaviour, but, FOR GODS SAKE PEOPLE. I can not remember a game in which a person's equilibrium was not thrown off by the wall of noise pounding down from the stands. Opposing players used to turn around and peek up at the student section with more than a little intimidation.

That latter probably had something to do with the fact that they were made to suffer a rain of oranges thrown from the stands starting at kickoff and not ending until they left the field.

And some of those oranges had been in the freezer overnight....

Not condoning, you understand. But it was a very different mood from what I'm hearing about in this thread.

And not one that had a lot of 'Oh, please, go ahead and win if you really must' to it.

The Seminoles come to Norman tomorrow to TAKE SOMETHING THAT IS OURS. What don't people get about that? If you don't get 'into' the game, don't go to the stadium

The Jehovah's Witnesses in our class never said the Pledge (for America, not Texas - we were in Wisconsin). That teacher better watch what she says in that regard - "Don't you like Texas?" - it's absolutely inappropriate for a public school teacher to ask a student a question that could potentially go against their religion. Maybe in Science class, but not about reciting a pledge.

On a lighter subject, heh, can't believe I went off like that... must be all the Witnesses that have been bothering my dogs lately (and the other Witnesses across the street might be fooled by your fake knocking, but my dogs never are, so I have to answer the door anytime anyone comes close!)...

There usually only are tickets available on gameday if the visitor didn't sell their allotment... and there might not be tix available, but the fact that they are advertising a possibility of tix being available says that FSU isn't bringing a completely full south endzone :D

Of course, I still expect a lot of Noles in attendance, just possibly not as many as the Pokes usually bring, heh.

I have been to many games over the years (since 81'), and I have never witnessed an area in the stadium as content and quiet as I witnessed in Section 36 last weekend. I left the game, confessing to my wife that maybe I take this sh*t too serious, of course she agreed, but after explanation she also agreed that the stadium was more quiet than we normally experience. But we only about 2 - 3 games a year???????????

We sat there last year during the KState game. It was the first home game that we had been at in years, and we were really excited to be there!! We had also been at the SoonerFans tailgate party earlier, and we were feeling especially social and rowdy!! We stood up and cheered during the first few plays, and sure enough a couple of large women behind us and a couple seats over asked us to sit down. We just laughed and asked why they were even there. They said that they were there to watch the game, and we said that they should watch it from their couch if they were just going to sit there the whole game and not cheer and make noise!!! Forget that lazy fan crap!!! We continued to stand up during big plays and whoop and holler, and we had a blast.

There were some good fans in there, but there were more people in that section who if you didn't know better, you'd think that they were dead or that they didn't know that it's o.k. to have fun at a football game!! No movement, no emotion, no noise, no nothing!! They were pathetic, and I just don't get why they are even there! Makes me mad just thinking about it!

I don't have a problem with a solute... that's more a sign of respect (we didn't even do that when I grew up in OK though). I do have a problem with pledging allegiance to an individual state for a couple of reasons. I won't go into those reasons to try not thread jack anymore than we have here. If fiatil was referring to Brothers Under Christ cape and superman t-shirt dudes, those guys used to help with the player runout (hold the national champion flags - which mysteriously apperaed after we visited alabama and they had the same thing hehe) and also help place the student freebees in the student section before the game to earn those spots.

If fiatil was referring to the OU band... well yeah, the band gets the prime student section seats. the front of the band also has like a row of guests. and yeah, it's roped off from the rest of the section, and yeah, you'll probably get removed by security if you try to claim those seats for yourself :D

If fiatil is referring to the ruf neks or the ruf nek lil sis groups... last I heard fired Bill Callyburger complained about them so now they're not allowed on the field before the game, so you have to put them somewhere, right? They are an important tradition to OU.

Those are the only three groups I can think of that have monopolies on the front of the student section recently. If you have to sit four rows deep because of them, is it really that bad?

I love you guys. Keep being awesome and people will never question your front-row status. The athletic department was probably just giddy that you guys started providing national TV cameras with epic fanatics to show after awesome plays a few years ago and don't want some unenthusiastic sorority text messagers in the front row not reacting after awesome moments.

I'm sure that if other groups sprung up like you guys, the athletic department would find a way to get them to the front as well... but hey, can't blame them for going with the guys that have provided great shots of students having fun for several seasons running now.

I'm referring to people who save seats towards the lower-middle portion of the section for their random sorority or club that really doesn't care about being at the game beyond talking to their friends and hanging out where everyone else is.

Not trying to say anything bad to the people who save seats and actually DO make noise :D

Get a few friends and be arseholes and be all like "can't save seats" or "seats taken... by us!"

plus, if you're new at this student section thing, let me guaran-damn-tee you that a 2:30 p.m. kickoff is a whole lot different scene than a 6 p.m. kickoff. People won't just leave to get to a Greek party or to go drink - they will leave because it's damn hot outside and they can't stand it any longer. The student section will start weeding out your "random sorority or club" starting by the second quarter and definitely pick up speed by the fourth.

It doesn't matter what the score is, because like you said, they don't really care about being at the game.

This happened all the time but it was okay since everyone behind them were packed in there and would just run up front when they left. These were also the fools who would take handfulls of the free gifts they give to the sooners. I wanted that schedule shirt dangit!

That's why we always try to get their when the gates open. You can get the seats you and be assured of getting whatever free stuff is on the seats. What sucks, is you have to sit there in the hot *** sun for 2 hours before the game starts.

Anyone in the student section who doesn't get rowdy and take a few liberties with the female guests should get put on double secret probation.

Fixed.

or you could do what we did, stay out and drink as long as possible and go in 45 minutes before kickoff, youre still gonna get a decent seat

I'm sure that if other groups sprung up like you guys, the athletic department would find a way to get them to the front as well... but hey, can't blame them for going with the guys that have provided great shots of students having fun for several seasons running now.

thanks badger, appreciate those words!

You guys ARE awesome! May see you there tomorrow. I loved the stuff you guys wrote on the dry erase board last year. That shiz was cracking me up all game

haha thanks a bunch! we're actually not allowed to carry that dry erase board in anymore after the utah state game. we didn't put anything bad on it, so i don't what the big deal is. we're gonna retire it for a couple home games and then break it out again after they forget. :D

Yeah, but I like to get as close to 50 and low as possible. Plus I don't mix OU football and alcohol. I'm afraid I would lose my cool during the game. I just wait until its over and drink to celebrate or out of depression. Plus I like to watch the stadium fill up and all the pregame stuff. This is my last year as a student, so I am getting it while I can.

Since I'm way out here in Nevada I have a tradition of cracking open my first beer when the foot hits the ball on the opening kickoff.

I know who made OU football what it is. The Coaches and the players. If you are one, you have my respect.
