View Full Version : Quick question about Tress Way...

Why wasn't he OUr kickoff specialist the last two seasons?

The obvious reason for 2008 is "redshirt," but if his leg has always been that strong on kickoffs, we'd have been a lot better at coverage in 2008 and 2009 IMO. No touchbacks Saturday, but he hit them high and inside the five everytime. Looked like with a little wind he might have had some TBs. Anyone connected with the "insiders" know anything about this?

He stunk it up kicking wise last year....Punted excelent.....And appears this year to have his kicking game back on track....

I know he stunk it up on FGs, but the boot has been great ever since high school IIRC. I know they kicked off from the 35, but I do remember seeing him boot it through the uprights a few times at Union as a HS senior. We're only talking 5 yards difference between HS and CFB kickoffs. Moreland would hit a touchback, and then follow it up with something like a kick OOB, one that bounced at the 20 (sometimes worse distance-wise) and seemed to always go right to the returnman with no hangtime.

I'm not ripping anybody, it just seemed weird to me is all. I guess it's sorta like asking why Sam Bradford didn't play in 2006. One: redshirt... two: maybe the not-so-perfect guy ahead of him was still better than him in year one.

Id rather him just focus on punting, but he is the most consistent this year since Mooreland is gone :(

Moreland was fine in 09.

You were impressed with those kickoffs? Wow, easily impressed I suppose

I think they were kicking short on purpose to avoid number 17(?), but maybe went a little shorter than they meant to? I dunno, just a feeling....

moreland was great if you like the other team's returned to get a running start and catch the ball near the 20 yard line

7 yard line on average. Not great, but improved over 2008.

I watched him throughout high-school as well....And thought he would put it in the end-zone on most kick-offs last year but that was not the case...He seems to be getting it back together....

Again, not many guys can make 'em fly through the EZ... I get that. And I realize there weren't any TBs Saturday night, but Way DID put the ball consistently (everytime) inside the 5, which appeared to be WAY (no pun intended) better than Moreland. I know the weather was nice, but it seems I remember the announcers saying there was no wind to speak of, either.

I was sitting on the west side looking down the length of the endzone. He hit most of his kickoffs to the goal line. Some were to the 3-4 yard line. He had a solid day on kickoffs.

Still, I wish we had a quality kickoff specialist so Way could save his energy for punts.

Light south wind in the first half or so. Maybe 5-10 mph.

As a rule, you really don't want your punter to be doing kicking duty. Too much risk of injury, especially on kickoffs; you get a guy hurt and you just lost two positions, not one.

You think Boise State's guy last night wasn't getting a little rattled after a partial blocked punt and a good smack laid him down?

LOL... How is it any different than having your kicker be the kickoff guy?

The only reason I ever heard about not crossing over, is that punting/kicking requires two different strokes and you can throw one off by going back and forth.

I wasn't clear enough here. Bad idea to have your punter handling placement duties on XPs and FGs. I'm still not crazy about the idea of having punter handle kickoffs. Personally I like having three total, just for the reasons named earlier. Good to have depth.

I just want to know what happened to the bare footed kickers?
