Sounds like some of the teams we used to play at East Central University.

Florida State playing them? Come on! Not even fair.

Sorry, I lived in Alabama...everyone knows about Samford there.

And I think it was Bobby Bowden's first coaching gig, not an alumnus...but could be wrong....noob.

Sure, I have. As a Baptist-affiliated school, it is Alabama's equivalent to something in between Oklahoma's OBU or Texas's Baylor. I think that they have a rather smallish undergrad enrollment of about 4-5,000, but they are still a full university offering doctoral programs. I have met several foreign missionaries with degrees from Samford and I have met quite a few students on some sort of exchange program in Asia.

Anyway to answer your question, I am not sure whether they should be division I football and playing FSU. They may be a patsy and getting their payday. Whatever. But, Southern Baptists love their football and all power to them if they think the priority should be God, country and college football.

My bad, in my earlier post I think it was Jacksonville State that I was thinking of that gave them a run for their money last year.

Terry Bowden was head coach at Samford from 87-92 before going to Auburn. He played at West Virginia, did graduate work at Oxford and FSU Law School. He is the only reason why I knew of Samford.

Bobby Bowden was at Bama for one season and finished his playing career at Howard College, he never coached at Samford.

Every school in the SE schedules them as a scrimmage game.

Yes. Both Bobby Bowden and his son Terry coached there in the past. They are now coached by former Heisman winner Pat Sullivan. I believe they are in the Ohio Valley Conference. They are a baptist university located in Birmingham, AL.

Howard College is Samford University. They changed the name in 1965.
In 1965 Howard reinstituted its master's degree program. This led to the college's elevation to university status on November 9, 1965. The school was renamed in honor of Frank Park Samford, chairman of the Board of Trustees and, to that time, the institution's most generous individual benefactor. (In addition, there was also a Howard University in Washington, D.C..)

Its kinda like API and Auburn. Same school, new name.

I graduated from Samford. Terry Bowden won a I-AA nat'l title when he coached there, right before he went to Auburn. '90 or '91, IIRC.
