BA starts slow, rolls over Owasso

By LYNN JACOBSEN World Sports Writer

OWASSO — Third-ranked Broken Arrow started slowly, but scored 39 straight points en route to a 39-19 victory over Owasso in front of 9,000 fans Friday night in a season-opening football game for both teams at Owasso Stadium.
Broken Arrow quarterback Archie Bradley finished 22-of-33 for 321 yards and four touchdowns to hand Steve Spavital a victory in his head-coaching debut with the Tigers.“The O-line did a great job and our receivers are really good,” Bradley said. “We have eight receivers that are all pretty much identical. They can all run and catch. That’s the dangerous thing about our offense.
“It’s great to give coach Spavital a win. We all respect him like no other coach we’ve had. He knows how to get us ready to play. Hopefully we will have a lot more success with him as our head coach.”
Bradley had touchdown passes of 52, 22, 15 and 22 yards on passes to Richie Fruechting, Levi Copelin, Zac Veatch and Zack Mills.Fruechting, a senior running back, also added two rushing touchdowns on runs of 13 and 27 yards to finish with 89 yards on 16 rushes.
Owasso got on the board first on a 25-yard halfback pass from Keon Hatcher to Nick DiMarco.
The Rams looked to add to the lead after Zach Collins scooped up the first of three Broken Arrow fumbles with 6:09 to play in the second quarter.
Owasso drove to the Broken Arrow 4-yard line but Daylen Burney’s 22-yard field goal was blocked.
“That was the turning point in the game,” Spavital said. “At that point, the momentum swung in our favor. We started to get a little swagger.”
The Tigers caught fire in that pivotal second quarter as Bradley threw for 176 yards on the three scores.
Broken Arrow scored on three of its next four possessions on drives of 83, 80 and 57 yards, the final two drives taking less than a minute each behind Bradley’s rocket arm. Mills said it was nice to see the offense click.
“We’ve studied a lot of film and knew we had some plays that might be open,” Mills said.
“On the interception, he (Owasso quarterback Kayson Key) left the ball up over the middle and I just caught it. It’s good to give coach a win.”
Key finished 20-of-31 passing for 222 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
