You shouldn't.

The only car in the thread over a mil is the Veyron. The muscle cars are at most $250K (and that only for the really rare GTOs and maybe that 427 Vette, although that's more in the 100K range), and the Italian rides mentioned are $250K +/- 100K. The GTR is well under $100K. The ZR1 is $110+/-5.

Then he was overpaying for tires, the most expensive set at Tire Rack is 726.00, even from a dealer they shouldn't have been more than about 1,200 installed. So he was either an idiot shredding tires and getting screwed by the dealership by paying that much for him or completely full of crap. Most of the maintenance costs on cars is not as ridiculous as what some owners claim, most of it is bogus big talk from them. Yes, it can be more expensive than a typical car but if someone is paying $5,000 for an oil change then they are and bending over and applying the lube themselves....it just isn't reality.

A man came in the parts store where i was working and wanted an oil filter for a Lamborghini. It was $50 at a time when most sold for about $5. We tried every oil filter in the store and none of them would work, so he had no choice but to order it.

after 2 yrs; would've spent enuff to buy new vette, with new tires.

even "run-flat" tires on vette only cost 3 to 400 per each.

A hundred shows a year? We ran weekly during the racing season, which amounted to about 25 shows. If the car was tore up, we missed a few weeks. Very few drivers that I knew ever ran 100 shows, because they had real jobs.

Sure, Shane Carson may spend $40,000 a year, but I doubt he really needs to. When you have a sponsor willing to pay the bill, you tend to pull the tires off that much quicker. (And where do the tires go? To the other teams.)

And if you run on soft clay, the tires can last a very long time, especially the fronts.

And yes, I know what I'm talking about. I have turned the wrenches on many a sprint car in my day (supermodifieds too). (And no, I was not a crew chief, just an ordinary pit crewman.)

Leroy Lizard
9/5/2010, 11:42 AM
BTW, tire prices are a lot cheaper than I thought.

http://www.hoosiertirewest.com/browse.cfm/wing-sprint/2,27.html

I see no way a sprint car team can spend $40,000 a year on tires unless they are just insane with their money. Not on dirt.

All of the major racing series have limits on the number of tires that you can use on one weekend, in the aims of cost containment and the fact that they have very little live testing anymore means they use a fraction of the tires that they used in years past. ALMS cars probably use the most number tires because of some the endurance races and the mixed dry, intermediate and rain compounds they use.

One of the dangers is listening to drivers talk about their costs. They tend to tell some real whoppers. The driver I pitted for used to tell fans that they ran qualifier tires which were only good for about four laps, giving the impression that we had to throw them away each week. But the following week we put the same qualifier tires back on for qualifying--they just didn't last long under CONTINUOUS use because of the heat buildup.

Well, if you're saying that I was a bad pit crewman you would probably be right.

But somehow I think you are under the mistaken impression that being on a pit crew in sprint car racing is like that in NASCAR. Not even close. Those NASCAR guys are real pros who practice constantly. We got no pay and no training. And for the most part, it was a thankless job that didn't require much in the way of mechanical skills. (Pull the back plate off, allow oil to pour out, swap out the quick-change gears, put the cover back on, fill with oil.) If the driver needed a highly-coordinated fix on the car, he was TSOL.

Some cars do have some outrageous prices on tire, for a 2006 Corvette Z06 Tire Rack has a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G Run-Flats for $1840.00, they also have a set of OE tires for $1598.00 or a set of other replacements from $770.00-1384.00. A set for my Z4 varies from $336.00-1,468.00. It is all in what you want to spend but as I said before, if you want to spend 5,000 on an oil change I am sure you can find someone to charge you that much....if you are willing to pay it, you deserve to get screwed.

Mmmmmm....no...I think you might misunderstand how much I know about cars and still can admit that I don't know **** compared to the guy who does it everyday and continues to be at the cutting edge in racing.

If you are involved in crewing...you don't do it for the thanks...you do it because you love it and you know when your guy wins....you might have had a hand in making the difference between him and the other drivers. Many times I have walked out after a race completely spent, dirty and ready to die/quit and by Monday was calling to help again the next week/weekend. The drivers I worked with knew as much about the car as anyone most times and some would get their hands dirty and be damn near wore out before they went out again.

I knew this one driver that used a metal trash can to fix the radiator fan shroud before the next heat. Stock, Carts, Modified. Super-Modified...outlaws...they were all down the street from my house when I was a kid. If you couldn't hear the cars running you were speculating that there must have been a bad wreck.

I miss the old days when I was a kid but I always am reminded of those days every year....

I'm not going to get into a name dropping contest with you because it will prove absolutely nothing.

I grew up a few blocks from where Fair Meadows is now. They raced stack cars there every weekend then and guys I went to school with would buy old cars and go down there and race with a $200 car. Those were the days I tell ya. I played little league baseball near there and watched them weld the superstructure of the Golden Driller together before standing him up permanently.

Bottomline....I've worked many a job without getting recognition. I didn't need it. I knew then as I know now that what I took away from most of those experiences in tricks and experience was worth 1000 times more than any pat on the back.

Racing cars isn't charity. It's not like my work is going to save lives or provide people homes. All it will do is allow some guy to make a grab for his own personal glory. Fine, but he'd better acknowledge my part in it. If he doesn't feel my changing the tires on his race car is worth acknowledging, then he can change the tires himself.

The two of you that said the Tesla Roadster...

I'll tell you what, let's have a race from say...oh....Tulsa to Waco. You two can drive the Tesla and I'll drive a Yugo. I'd bet the ranch that I win. :D
First- you'd get lost somehow.
Second- I believe the new Tesla's are coming with 45 min charge time (Spoke to the tri state sales rep the other day when I spotted a roadster around the corner from my house). So, you'd still lose.

SicEm would be better off on his scooter, if he still had it.

I've been pulled over so many times between McAlester and the border by OHP and local cops (I'm looking at you Tushka) that the state of Oklahoma threatened to suspend my license for a year if I got another speeding ticket.

Fortunately, I haven't.

You know how many times I've been pulled over for speeding in Texas? Never.

only in Gainesville here

screwed by the "night" speed limit
