Asked on Dan Patrick's radio show what quarterback Landry Jones does better than Heisman winner Sam Bradford, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops quipped: "Grow a mustache."
Hours later, at his weekly press conference, Stoops said: "In all fairness to Landry, we love where he's at. We love everything that he's doing, his attitude. He has skill. He works hard. He's going to be a great player. But to compare him to the No. 1 pick in the draft, a guy who set records, it's just not fair."
Jones was asked what areas he needs to improve to get to Bradford's level.
"That's not my goal," Jones said. "My goal is not to be Sam Bradford. Yes, he is a great player. Does he do some stuff really good? Yeah. Absolutely. But that's not who I'm trying to be. I'm trying to be Landry Jones, the best player I can be."
Since Jones is a sophomore, it's too early to define his career.
"He has the same kind of attitude and work ethic and (is the same) humble team guy that Sam was," Stoops said. "We'll see if he can develop the skill level to be that kind of guy. He'll need support, too. The quarterback sometimes is only as good as those around him. Sam had some really experienced guys a couple of years ago that were great players."
What about a mustache contest?
"I don't think Sam really ever tried to grow facial hair," Jones said. "I'm sure he could."
